What do you lend money for?

This was a question that I have pondered for some time.When a friend or family member asked you for a few bucks what is it usally for? Also why do you lend it to them?

I lend money to people I can trust. I never lend money to idiotic people that just want a quick way to make money. Everyone asks me, but only certain people I lend to because its useless trying to get money back from someone that can't trust very well.

So that's where all my family's money keeps going...

I typically lend money for one of three things:
Booze
Cigarettes
Food.

And its usually to my 16 year old cousin Elissa.

She smokes that too, but like the rest of my family has a slight allergic reaction to it. Hasn't stopped her.

I always had horrible allergic reactions to drugs too.

I'd lend money to any of my friends. I'd also expect to get it back, and they know that. I do have a rule, though. If I loan money to you, I'll expect it back in a decent amount time. If you can't do that, then I'll never loan you money again. I also won't ever loan you money again if you "pass off" a loan to someone else. You know, "well, I owe you ten bucks, but John owes me ten bucks, so we'll just say that John owes you ten bucks, and then we'll be even, ok?" Nu-uh. Don't pull that crap with me.

Right now, a friend owes me 40 bucks, and has for a long time, but I haven't really had time to nag him about it, so it's not really a big deal. I know for a fact that he'll pay me back, probably as soon as I get back to the States, so I can let it slide for a while.

Also, when I loan someone money, the amount of time they have to pay me back is directly proportional to the amount that I owe them. If I loan someone 5 bucks, I want it back soon. It shouldn't take someone long to raise 5 bucks to pay me back. I expect them to need a bit more time if it's a hundred or more.

If I loan you a buck or two, I probably won't really care if you pay me back at all. It's not important to me. Just buy me a drink sometime or something.
