Has anyone here used Litestep?
I've been reading about it lately and it seems to have some good features. Supposedly it runs faster because it uses less code and it is more stable than the Windows 9x kernal because it gets upgraded more frequently. I like to make informed decisions before dl'ing something so I'm interested to get some of your opinions and/or experiences.
Thanks in advance... |

yes, i have used litestep, and the only readson i am not currently using it is because it has issues with windows xp. It is easy to get rif of if you do something drastically wrong (which i only managed to do once in nearly a year, and i was warned 3 times beforehand).
It is more stable on the whole, but themes that are in development (non OTS themes - OTS is a theme standard, so you don't have to set each one up individually) are a lot less stable than finished themes. The latest OTS installer can be obtained from here: http://www.beyondconvention.net/ohussain/ As for what you said, it does use up less RAM (though not loads less), it is very stable (though there are ways to force it to a crash...try running explorer along side it ). It is amazingly configurable, and most of the UI's are great. I say try it. You don't have to set it as your default shell, and i'll go find a shell switcher for you (basically it says "what shell do you want to boot today?"[e] found the shell switcher, it lives here: http://www.dx13.co.uk/shellon/index.htm |

I have used Litestep, but i didn't like it, because the code syntax that you need to to use to customise it was very difficult to learn (for me anyway), and in my experience it took more time than the Explorer shell to load.
On the other hand, using the computer was very very nice, as it has a much better interface than the Explorer shell. |

you can use litestep in two ways:
1. use this ots or a similar distribution, download all those fancy themes and use everyday a new one 2. pick your favourite theme/create an own theme and tweak it by editing text files/altering bitmaps until it is perfect for you, this is impossible with stuff like ots but you should try it, those distributions nowadays come with an uninstaller ![]() the worst thing that can happen is that you have to boot with a boot disk and set shell=Explorer.exe in system.ini (win9x says that you have to reinstall windows if doesn't find the shell - which isn't true of course) |

if you want a perfect theme you still have to edit it, the options in ots aren't enough if you want to stick with a theme for a long time imho
sorry for being unclear |
