windows media player uses digital cd playback while winamp uses analog playback, you need a cable from your cdrom to the soundcard in order to hear the cd

however you can add digital cd playback to winamp:
install the cdreader and read it's docs carefully, you have to disable winamp's default cd plugin

Adding on to Lion King's post about disabling the default Winamp CD plugin.

To disable the default Winamp CD plugin, close down Winamp. Go to C:\Program Files\Winamp (where your Winamp files are located), and go to the Plugins folder there.
What you want to disable is in_cdda.dll
Rename that file, in_cdda.dll.off
