3rd party software for recording mp3s (in MP3 format) onto a Sony MiniDisc?
I just purchased the SonyMZ-N707 minidisc player/recorder. After installing the OpenMG Jukebox software I became exteremly aggitated. In my opinion this softare is not very good. Not only does it not work with WinAmp playlists (which I use) it also limits the amount of times you can record an MP3 off of your computer to 3. You must "check" the file back in off of one of the 3 discs you copied it to before you can copy it again. Basically this is crippleware that you pay for. There are other short coming that I don't need to get into here.
Bottom line. Is there any other non-Sony software that I can use to copy MP3s (in MP3 format) onto the MiniDisc player using the cable supplied by Sony? Software that would ideally be compatible with WinAmp play lists. Thanks |

Can't you just use the traditional inputs (optical or line in) to record your music to MP3?
If you do it this way, then you can use winamp, but you may want to install one of the plugins that places a gap between tracks so thatthe MD does not record them all as one big track. |

According to Minidisc.org, the MZ-N707 has got the following inputs:
USB line/optical mic So he should be able to record normally, preferably using the optical. |

Recording the traditional way will take significantly longer. Besides, the Sony checkout system is pretty benign.

They way I look at it if I copy to the MiniDisc the traditional (optical cable, etc.) way I can only stick 80 mintues of music onto it. If I use the Sony software (which is garbage) then I can copy the music onto the MiniDisc in MP3 format and get about 5 hours on there. This is what I would like to do but not with the software that came with the unit. Perhaps there is nothing out there that can substitue for OpenMG, that would be terrible though.

Doesn't it just write the MP3 music as the standard ATRAC format, in which case you would still only get 80 minutes?

Sony has released different variations of ATRAC now with their NetMDs. Essentially, they have three different bit rates. The one which allows 5 hours of music on one disc is roughly 32kbps.
ps. NetMD's have other new features as well, such as a new navigation system |

have to use the sony software.
if you wish to use the USB to tranfer, follow these steps: Create a nero image file (.nrg) of the songs you want to put on the MD mount that image as a virtual drive (using daemon tools, i suggest) use sony software to copy from the virtual image to the MD player. a simple search in google, will give you more detail if you need it

Hey the new Real10 has a music store-first download is only 10 cents. To get around copy protection just burn it to cd or make an image then use the simple buring prog.
