A Pocket PC Winamp? . .

Hey guys. Just was wondering if there were any discussion or thoughts onto porting Winamp to the Pocket PC platform. Would love to take my favorite mp3 player on the go with me!

That would be cool if someone did so. Thanks!

I have an iPaq 3835 with 128 megs total with my SD card. I can hold about 2 cd's worth of music. I mostly use it for working out, since I can log my activites on the device. Which is why I use it to listen to music as well, but the Windows Media player on it skips around alot. Was just wondering if anyone knew of any plans to port over the Winamp program to the Pocket PC. I know that would make alot of customers happy besides me.

I second the request for Pocket PC support. Most pocket pc devices are MP3 enabled and can be expanded to 128MB+. The Windows Media Player is OK, but lacks features (like an equalizer) found in Winamp. I would agree with the statement that this is what MP3 players are for, but as a business traveller, the fewer devices you have to carry, the better off you are.

I would also welcome a version of winamp on pocket PC, WMP is OK but is rather memory intensive.

I totally agree.

Seriously, I understand that the iPod and all of those MP3 players out there probably does a better job than a program on your PocketPC doing the same thing, but then again those MP3 players can't do half of the stuff that my PocketPC can do. And it is true that I would rather carry one device that I can listen to music on and browse the web or update a spreadsheet on rather than fiddle with multiple devices to do the same work. I do think alot of people who own a PocketPC device would be very pleased to have a version of Winamp on their pdas, becasue we all think that Winamp is superior to other media players and it just rocks! (Ok, enough brown-nosing.) If I'm wrong here, let me know. Thanks.

I agree-I have 192 megs of memory on my iPaq so playing MP3's is a cinch. But guess what, Windows Media Player sucks donkey ass on the Pocket PC. Not to say that it doesn't eat donkey balls on the standard Windows platform either, but it doesn't blow quite as bad.

It will randomly skip to the next track during the middle of a song, or not play certain mp3's at all. And I haven't found a ryme or reason for it, doesn't seem to be a bitrate problem or anything else. It really sucks.

Anyway, in summary, we need a decent MP3 player for the Pocket PC platform. Winamp just makes sense.

The big problem with Windows CE is there's such a huge variety of platforms, processors and OS variants around - making debugging a nightmare.

Despite that, I'd love a CE version of winamp3, but it would require looking hard at the resource usage, although it would load on my Jornada with 28Mb of RAM free, some PPCs might not be so lucky. Winamp 2 would be *much* harder to port.

Another thing to consider is that most CE machines don't have FPUs (Floating-point processors) so you have to use integer maths for everything, which is fairly tricky with audio decoders (you'd have to rewrite a good proportion of the wacs for a CE port). Consider that Winamp3 currently doesn't run that well on a 400Mhz CPU with FPU, and that the fastest iPaqs are now coming out with 400Mhz CPUs without FPU. My Jornada only has a 200Mhz CPU.

That and a different build is required for every type of CPU, and there are three supported for CE (ARM, MIPS, and x86).

I personally use PocketDivx for all my pocket MP3/Ogg needs at the moment.

Since Windows Media Player and RealOne player have both been ported to Pocket PC's its time for Winamp to step up and take its place as number one media player for Pocket PC's All we need now is Nullsoft to design an ARM and X-Scale processor version for Pocket PC 2002 and up. MIPS processors are becoming out dated, so the ARM and X-Scale processors are the only ones that Nullsoft currently has to concentrate on.

Here are the codecs i think that Nullsoft would have to incorperate into a Pocket version of Winamp (Could be named "Pocket Winamp")

MP3 Codec
WMA Codec
Real Media Codec
MP3PRO Codec (Needed BADLY for Pocket PC's)

Those are the only 4 codecs i can think of that everyone would like to have incorperated into ONE Player.
I hope that Nullsoft is already into the designing stages for a Pocket PC version, if they could make a port to Pocket PC, they could very well become the best media player for Pocket PC's and Desktop PC's
