Onboard everything?
http://www.pcchips.com*****M787CLR.html
We just got those motherboards in at my work this week. Onboard cpu (VIA giga-pro, 1ghz cpu), onboard sound, onboard lan and onboard video. The cpu has a little chipset fan on it that you cant hear. If you looking for a quite computer for a server than this is the one. Another good thing is that there tiny mobos! And that they're uber cheap! you can pick up one of these boards for under 200 bucks canadian! I dunno since there so cheap and so quite i was thinkin of pickin one up just to have as a novelty piece... www.audioflo.ath.cx All music, All the Time |

Thanks for pointing that out. I've been thinking about building a small form factor internet appliance for a while now, and this looks like just the thing I need

A) What are the physical dimensions of this thing? It's hard to tell from the picture.
B) Does such a thing as a PCI to CompactFlash type II connector exist? I think it would be way cool to use a 1GB IBM microdrive as the primary hard drive. |

I think this is just a tad smaller, though I may be wrong…

No, don't get onboard everything - it sucks. Just read the tech support forums here - you'll find some onboard devices steal bandwidth on the bus from others, the quality will be shoddy as cheap components will be used, and none of it is upgradable.
Stick with a card based system, or you'll regret it... |

Well, those things were created for extra-tiny-budget computers. No one would ever buy one of those and expect it to be a great gaming system. Via knows better than that. That's not what that CPU was created for.

That's likely very true, but I owned a PC Chips motherboard about five years ago, and it is the worst piece of junk I ever bought (I was suffering from lack of job at the time!).
I ended up buying all PCI cards for it and disabling the onboard stuff, it was all so useless! |

The motherboard may be crap. You might be right. Those VIA chips are supposed to be pretty good, though (considering everything).

Via do seem very good - my present mainboard (a gigabyte one) has a via chipset, and it is excellent.

Thanks... it'd likely be cheaper then the VIA Eden board, so I will probably use it for my project.

I got an ad in todays mail for a tiny keypad which would nicely replace the keyboard, thereby reducing the overall footprint of your postulated design.
with a micro mousepad you could get small for sure. "Nothing really matters much to me"-Freddie Mercury |
