Ripping dark side of the moon

Hi all,

I am trying to rip Pink Floyd’s dark side of the moon so that I can get it all as two long mp3 files. One Going from "Speak to me" to the end of “the great gig in the sky” and another going from “Money” to “eclipse”

I have tried ripping it all as a wav file with audio catalyst and then joining all the tracks together, but for some reason there is a short bit missing from the start of each of the tracks. And this ruins the entire feel of flowing..

I had a plan to get a CD player and plug it in through the line in port and trying to record the whole thing and then cutting it in two, but for some reason when ever I try to record I just get silence. Windows sound recorder only lets me have sixty seconds of audio, and “cool edit 96” just gets silence.

So how can I do this?

Any help you can give would be appreciated, and thankyou in advance

Just use CDEX

Select "Extract Partial Track", select the range you want to rip and then click ok.

First things first. Now you need to uninstall Audiocatalyst.

Well I’ve got it all done and made now in part 1 and part 2

If you ask me the only other way to listen to DSOTM is all the way through, breaking them up is sacrilege

Audio catalyst sucks, big major hardcore yeah well, its crap. It used to only grab the files I needed at 1.0x I was so surprised at the speed of cdex. Forgive me but the last time I used mmjb it was too much bloat for me. Maybe it’s got better, but for now Cdex rules my ripping experience

Tell me, there seem to be many different encoders that you can use, what are your opinions as to which are the best one to use?

I didnt say i liked mmjb, just that it worked with that cd. Im going to re-rip it with soundforge 6 when i get around to it (its the best program i've found for full cd ripping), altho it takes longer as it rips the cd, then you have to encode/save.

You could have ripped the two sections straight to mp3 but oh, well

Use Lame with RazorLame as front-end.

Use the alt-preset standard quality for an excellent final result

Ogg Vorbis was already mentioned, MPC is another codec superior to MP3. If you want to stay with MP3, LAME is the encoder to go for high quality. Use the preset command lines and you'll be happy. --alt-preset standard gives you a VBR file around 192 kbit/s average, --alt-preset extreme comes in at around 256 kbit/s (depends on the encoded song).

As a ripper, I'd choose Exact Audio Copy [a.k.a. EAC]. It's AFAIK the only ripper that guarantees you that the rip is an exact copy of the source. It works great together with LAME, btw!

Also, see "The ChrisMyden.com Guide To Creating Amazing MP3s" for further information on this subject.

lol, no not like that...

under options/settings/encoder there is an option as to which encoder you want to use, i did it with the default 'lame' one but I wanted to know if there was a better one for future ripping....

I love Pink Floyd too. It's one of the only ways to feel high without doing drugs. I DL'd Dark Side Of THe Moon and The Wall from file sharing programs and I was trying to figure out how to break it up into tracks, but I decided not to since it is like killing your best friend or something like that. But I rented The Wall movie and it was really messed up. I don't know why everyone loves it so much, cuz it made no sense to me. And why would I want to watch some guy named Pink Floyd go insane? Is that entertaining really? The movie was just plain disturbing.

Well, the movie "The Wall" is about a rockstar named Pink (I'm not sure about his second name being 'Floyd'). I enjoyd watching the movie, BTW (have it on DVD ). It's impressive how the music incorporates with the movie.

I think that someone on the phone called his mother Mrs. Floyd.

"The Wall" video/DVD is very depressing. "Pink" is no doubt the psuedocharacter of Syd Barrett, one of the original members of Floyd who was mentally ill (later, VERY mentally ill).

"Dark Side Of The Moon" is argueably Pink Floyd's best album, but
"Wish You Were Here" (a tribute of sorts to Syd Barrett) is as good, if not better IMHO.

I'm not sure if it's 'cause I've heard every track a million and one times or what, but Dark Side of the Moon is my least favorite Pink Floyd Album.

Animals, Meddle, Wish You Were Here, all much better IMO.

'Wish You Were Here' is the best album IMHO, but 'Dark Side Of The Moon' is pretty close to it 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' ist their best song, what ya think?
