The Winamp name....

Ok, I was just playing around in Linux and i was wondering for fun if the name XMMS would come up in the searchs on the Winamp Forum and I found alot. One thread which was like 100 posts long talked about everything. i think it was callled "linux winamp3" i'm not sure how old it was. But someone mentioned if they would called it LinAmp since it was for "Lin"ux and now "Win"dows and he got replied to by a bunch of people saying Winamp is a well known name and a bunch of stuff liek that, it is no way implying windows. And this is by forum admins...

This maybe my first post but I beg to differ. I think Winamp Does imply windows. It would just make sense. Its a play words. Just like the company of Winamp, Nullsoft. I remember being at nullsoft.com before and it explained that the name came from "other"(microsoft) companys name. And making a joke that Nullsoft made nothing and hence Null.... so if Justin named the company on a joke name of microsoft. Nullsoft, and just decided to name Winamp for no other reason then just a name then... its not true. Where's Justin??! I know he named it from windows OS.

Anyways... what do you have to say about that? heh.
Also i'd like to comment from reading a couple older posts, Linux is a better operating system then Windows, I use both. I'm sure that all these Windows only people tried Linux they would see clearly that Linux is better... but its true, Windows is more for the desktop! But Linux community is working towards that like the company XandrOS(xandros.com) and Lindows(bastards, i don't support them. making you pay and not dishing out the source, damn then )

anyways just some stuff i'd thought i'd waste your time letting you read. peace

[whisper]Of course Winamp stands for Windows Amplifier (or something similar), but Nullsoft and AOL don't want to get sued by Microsoft[/whisper]

[loud]Winamp has NOTHING to do with Windows, and there's not going to be a Linamp.[/loud]

[edit]Lame typo[/edit]

if winamp was renamed to linamp for a linux relase than it would prove that winamp was beyond a shawdow of a doubt named after the Windows OS. instead winamp stands for windowed amp or a music player that uses a window interface

But you must remember Buchan that Windows, the OS, was named after a general computing name for a window on a screen and not the other way around. So your theory is flawed.

right when windows tried to sue lindows for stealing of the name the courts ruled that "windows" was a general term for windowed computer environment and microsoft couldnt copyright the term windows for its OS.

i can't beleive i forgot that case! so winamp can be called winamp but they can't say they are windows amp or can they?

Oddly enough there is a "new" player out there called Zinf based on FreeAmp's code. It's name really is an acronym.

Zinf
Is
Not
FreeAmp

It looks like FreeAmp and smells like FreeAmp however.

i remember back when winamp was first started (back when it was winAMP), there were many many MANY other programs with "win" starting their names. as far as i can tell, windows encouraged it, as free advertising. as for microsoft suing anyone for using the "windows" trademark, well, a) that's illegal (windows being a general term, etc), b) that's unlikely (too much work for an potentially unsuccessful case), c) it's stupid (like i said before, free advertising), d) it's pointless (windows DOES practically OWN the os market right about now, and there's no danger of it slipping in the immediate future), e) it's fucking selfish too (even if windows lost its market share tomorrow, it's had a good run, all the top execs of microsoft aren't in any danger of running out of money any time soon)

if I'VE made any mistakes, please correct me too

But everybody still loves Pharr Laps 286 extender, without which Bill Gates would still be trying to get his Tandy XT to run Easy DOS Menu Maker.
"gunna call my menu WINDOWS" thought Billy.
I think the name was given after the Llama had it's ass whipped, and was obligated by ancient tradition to disclose the secret of success.
"Call it WinAmp" bleated the defeated Llama, and it shall be the most popular music playing software the earth has ever seen.
And so it was.
And so it shall ever be.
