cannot receive radio stations

I am a new user. I would like to listen to Radio but every station I click on gives me a message that Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. It also says that I may not have the appropriate permission to access the item. I have no trouble listening to radio in Windows Media Player. I only click on stations that have 28 or 56 modems as my Modem is 56 and it matches my provider.

Well - I guess that some people just do NOT READ the message. PEAJAY mentioned that he is a new user and having problems listening to radio stations with winamp - The exact same problem that I am having and to which I have never gotten a reply?

Read the post - It helps.

Check out some of these posts from a SHOUTcast forum search on 'cannot access the specified device'.

Specifically, look at the post titled...
Minor Problem (I hope...)

A previous post described the problem and offered a solution that worked.

Use the search tool. It helps.

Thanks for the reply djlgc. You stated that I should use WinAmp radio for internet listening and that is exactly what I would like to do. Unfortunately I am not able to get it as I stated in my initial request and would appreciate any help you or others might have.

Here is your problem -- some program other than winamp (usually realplayer) is associated with .pls files. That program no longer exists, so windows gives an error when opening the program. Sometimes re-installing winamp doesn't fix these associations, especially on win98. Otherwise, you will still be able to open stations by right clicking the tune in link, saving the target, and manually dragging on top of winamp.

In win2000 it's easy to set up file associations (folder options) but i tried once on win98 and gave up, there are too many variables. If someone knows how to manually change the file association under win98 please jump in. I remember seeing some instructions somewhere... thats what this guy needs.

I just got Radio to work. Here is what did it for me. First I uninstalled every Real Player file in add/remove programs. Then I went to Norton CleanSweep which was running when Real Player was installed. Then I went to File Types which is in different places in different Windows versions and associated .psl files with Winamp. Lastly I uninstalled and reinstalled Winamp.
