Well, before I got a hardware firewall, I used Norton Personal Firewall. It worked fine.

Well actually the best firewall depends on the amount of knowledge you have on the apps you use and what ports the use to access the internet. If you have little or no knowledge then use Zone Alarm or *buy* the upgrade Zone Alarm Plus (Their is a pro version but it contains ad blocking stuff that is known to cause alot of trouble with some sites) or Sysgate Personal Pro. If you feel that you know enogh about your programs to make a tight ruleset or are willing to ask around then you can try Kerio and Atguard. Both offer far more control, instead of letting IE access the net, you can make it only access port 80 or only your isp's proxy server etc
Also read this stuff, and go to the websites and check your "stealth" rating What is a Firewall ??? http://grc.com/su-firewalls.htm read here to find out What Firewall Should I use ??? Well this really depends on what level of knowledge you have about computers. If you have little knowledge I would suggest Zone Alarm Pro, or Sygate. If you have intemediate knowledge I would suggest Sygate, Kerio, or Atguard (NIS), and if your a guru you can use whatever, but I would suggest Kerio, or Atguard If you have any problems these boards are a great place to ask for help http://www.hostboard.com/cgi-bin/ult...bb=forum&f=385 http://www.dslreports.com/forum/kerio Latest Versions Kerio - 2.14 get it here http://download.kerio.com/dwn/kpf2-win.exe Zone Alarm Pro - 3.0124 something http://www.zonelabs.com/download/index.html Sygate Personal Firewall Pro - 5 http://soho.sygate.com/products/pspf_ov.htm Atguard - 3.11 - ftp://ftp.tu-graz.ac.at/pub/mirror/....rd/atgd322.exe Can I Use 2 Firewalls at the Same Time ??? The simple answer to this is yes you can, however this can also be dangerous as the 2 firewalls can interfere with each other and screw your system up real good. Some example of 2 firewalls running well together are: Atguard and Kerio - I'm currently running this and it works well, Atguard accesses the tcp stack higher than kerio so the don't interfere Black Ice Defender and anything - BID is an IDS not a firewall so it works well with anything Scan Sites List of Sites http://balder.prohosting.com/~bud01/scan.html Shields-UP! http://grc.com/default.htm WinNuke Test Page http://www.jtan.com/resources/winnuke.html Hacker Whacker http://hackerwhacker.com/ Secure-Me/DSLreports http://www.secure-me.net/ Sygate http://scan.sygatetech.com/ E-SOFT/SecuritySpace.com http://www.securityspace.com/smysecure/index.html Secure Design http://www.sdesign.com/securitytest/index.html myCIO.com http://www.mycio.com/content/security/cybercop.asp Java Port Scanner by Ken Kalish http://www.mycgiserver.com/~kalish/ Remote Security Tester by Ken Kalish http://www.mycgiserver.com/~kalish/ Security-Port-Scanvon by NetScreen Technologies http://www2.netscreen.com/pub/scan/ Whitehats Free DDOS Testing Service http://dev.whitehats.com/scan/ddos/ddos.html Online Trojan Port Scanner (Lockdown?) http://onlinescanner.com/ Sybergen Online-Security-Check http://www.sybergen.com/products/prescan1.htm Sandbox Security Test Suite http://www.sandboxsecurity.com/SecurityTest/ WebTrends http://www.webtrends.net/tools/security/scan.asp Virtual Suicide http://suicide.netfarmers.net/ Personal Security Scanner ;-) http://server142.smartbotpro.net/camera/ Security Space https://secure1.securityspace.com/smysecure/index.html ibh - Ingenieurbuero Holger Heimann; Germany http://www.it-sec.de/vulchk.html Hochschule Rapperswil, Swizerland, im Auftrag des Datenschutzbeauftragten des Kantons Zuerich http://www.ita.hsr.ch/cgi-bin/datens..._test_start.pl Adiscon QuickCheck for Clients, Germany http://www.exchange-antivirus.de/Sec...ck/default.asp Anti-Trojan.net, Germany http://www.anti-trojan.net/ Quick-Test by sicher-surfen.de, Germany http://www.sicher-surfen.de/cgi-bin/index.pl The Apostols http://apostols.org/tools.html QuickInspector for the Web by Shavlik Technologies http://security.shavlik.com/ Browser-Check bei heise online (Germany) http://www.heise.de/ct/browsercheck/ crypto.yashy.com http://crypto.yashy.com/ http://www.securitymetrics.com/securitytests.adp I hope that helps, if you need any more info just give me a yell

Too bad though the admins proxies block people from accessing a lot of sites. Oh well, winamp works. ![]() A good firewall would be a router with built in firewall technology, but on the software side of things, ZoneAlarm, TinyPersonal Firewall 3.0 (free version I believe is 2.0), or BlackICE. Sorry about the links, just go to www.download.com to find them. [edit] Whiteflip: the router if it's any good would not be $40 in Canadian or American currency. If you want a good firewall router, go with D-Link (I recommend the DI-704P router, excellent it's only ~$120 Canadian, or $50-60 US) or a Linksys router.[/edit] "Welcome to the Island of people who know too much."..."Did you really think balloons would stop him?!" wtf? i have a linksys router. the prices you are suggesting are four port wireless configurations!
he needs a one port standard 10/100 ethernet firewall/router. linksys makes one for 40USD. not like hes building a home network. if he is then up it 20 dollars to get a dsl/cable firewall 4port router with switch. I'm Back? |

there is an advantage to using software firewalls, they can tell what application is sending/recieving information. I've had good experience with Norton Personal Firewall, as you can completely customize the rules. Unfortunately, I have a cheap SMC router, and I can't use a firewall with it, or the damn thing won't work.

Go with ZoneAlarm 2.6
I have 3 but it easts up too much memory. And most of the stuff is pointless, ad blockings blows, cookie blocking is pointless, email porotection is not needed if you have norton system works 2k2 For ad blocking go w/ "The Proxomitron" free, has an ass load of easy configs, lets you make your own (needs programing knowlage), and is FREE! + it has all the power of one you pay for, and is even better. (note I am not being payed to say that, or am I assosiated w/ them in any way) |

I would recommend a hardware router, I have one (not posting model # tho
) I got it for about 50 bucks with a rebate or sale or something, which is only a little more than software firewalls cost. A Hardware firewall is in many ways 'safer' than a software firewall, mostly because there are low-level entry points into windows below the TCP/IP level that can be exploited by some. The only disadvantage to a hardware firewall is internal access (at least mine can't do this)--> if you want to be able to block programs on your computer from accessing the internet, I would suggest Norton Personal Firewall. Very protective of app's internet access, sometimes too protective if you don't configure it correctly.

you know this isn't that big of a deal, for a personal computer connected through a cable modem, you need nothing more than Zone Alarm. You don't need a hardware firewall or expensive software. The most important thing is to hide your computer by closing all unused ports which Zone Alarm does and it is fairly easy to use. Don't make too much of a big deal out of it.

zone alarm is still hackable. it hides unused ports yes but hackers can still get in through open ports. hardware is best. almost impossible unless you configure it wrong.

Lets get one thing straight first...hackers aren't a problem, it's crackers you should be worried about.
Also, the reason you don't need hardware protection is a simple matter of mathematics. First think about how many potential targets there are for a cracker, and two think about how much of a waste of time it would be to hack through zone alarm on a personal computer that really has nothing of much interest. its easier to get hardware because all you have to do is plug it in, set it up, and leave it. Plus it wont eat any memory off your computer

Yet they still do it... subseven is useless on a server with no videocard installed, and in which nobody is paying any real attention to the desktop.

if only they made hardware antivirus detectors like they make hardware firewalls

If you hack someone to piss them off, that would be considered cracking (personal gain ohter than knowledge).
