Winter Skin Contest Results

Winter Skin Contest Results

First of all, my thanks go out to the judges (who can name themselves if they like), the winamp folks who helped get this off the ground (jones and wally), the skinners of course, ¤db¤ for providing guidance on how things like this are done, dimichan and Simon for the offering of webspace, skinme! for his bandwidth, and Not In Santiago for helping to pull this off...

Now, for the results...

The 5th place skin is xenosomething's "winter", with a score of 60.
To be fair to this skin, it was not completed, but xeno was nice enough to submit it anyway. All of the judges noted that it would have scored higher if it were complete, and I hope xeno finishes it.

Judge's comment: "I'm going to going to state the obvious: too bad it isn't finished! It's impossible to give this a mark because I'm sure the final product will look different, so you get a pass. (Plus bonus marks because that's the funkiest Christmas tree I've ever seen.)"

Download winter

The 4th place skin is kingstar's "faint winter", with a score of 74.
kingstar is relatively new here, and I think this is a great effort!

Judge's comment: "Simple, but nice to look at. The colour choice is great. I thought it needed more contrast, but this skin is called Faint Winter and that's exactly what you've presented. The Main is terrific. Skinning the little extras and snazzier playstacks would make this skin a definite contender for first place."

Download faint winter

The 3rd place skin is ¤db¤'s "zima", with a score of 82.
The judges were split on this skin - two had it at or near the top, while the other two had it lower down. This skin is filled with amazing animations.

Judge's comment: "The best picture skin anywhere ever! Probably. Practically seamless integration. Cutest animations ever. Ever. I say. Great mikro and all round well themed."

Download zima

The 2nd place skin is flatmatt's "construction paper winter", with a score of 88.
This is a really nice skin, and it would have won if the contest had ended as originally scheduled

Judge's comment: "This skin instantly hits you that it's a winter skin, it really hits the brief and completes it with style. Some buttons are a little bit hard to see but over all they are clearly labled. And I gotta say, flatmatt that snowman is so cool! I love it!"

Download construction paper winter

This year's winning skin is Simon's "snowflake", with a score of 92.
This skin had 3 first place votes, and one second place vote. Simon is on a roll!

Judge's comment: "Fantastic 3D modelling on snowmen, trees, etc. Wide colour range (not faded). Funky circular / wide style. Lovely backgrounds. Innovative EQ sliders. Absolutely trend mikroamp (great play/stop symbol integration). Great cursors. All round theme is well carried through. I wish I could raise the temperature in winter with those EQ bars!"

Download snowflake

Congratulations to all the skinners on the fine skins they made for us to enjoy!

Congratulations Simon, and everyone else who entered.

Simon, I have to say, this is quite the best skin I have seen from you in your long skinning life, full of neat 3d modeling, clever animations and super use of window positions make this one top notch

Would you like a custom title as a prize, ohhh, errrr on second thoughts

Well done anyhow, perhaps you'd like to sleep with my GF as a prize instead ?

Personally, I had Simon's first... but not by much. I am absolutely in love with the general style of Simon's skin - it just epitomises what I've come to perceive Simon to be. It's him. I've used it extensively since I first got it (after judging of course).

DB, I'm not a great fan of picture skins. However, that didn't cloud my judgement by any stretch of the animation. So don't kick me. I'll tell you that you and Simon were one point apart in my judging. I can't add but luckily it didn't affect the outcome... just.

Flatmatt - great skin. I loved to play with it. However, I felt it a bit unusable to use. I found myself slightly missing the actual buttons.

Kingstar - a great entrance to skinlove. It didn't quite compete with the big boys this time round. I liked it. However, it lacked some stuff that will come to you after skinning for a while - like a better sense of the Winamp UI and how it's used. Also, it seemed a little faded for my liking. Perhaps that was the intention but it seemed a little too faded, even for the dreary winters I remember (lately most of them spent in sunny places ).

Xeno. I wanted to give it more but it was just unusable. I didn't feel it would be right to turn it out as a winner given all the nice finishing touches of the others. I'm sure it'll be a great skin when it's finished. Sorry, mate.

Jones - a girlfriend - of course! He's Britain's biggest playa. Ain't that right, Jonesy.

Jones - is your custom title Latin or Italian? Care to impart what it means?

I thought it would be a great idea to come up with a new idea, since i am not an experienced skinner yet. But i guess making the skin a little bit faint made it lose some points ...

good job all you who actually finished your skins (doesn't include xeno)
I know how dificult that is sometimes
congrats Simon
*clap clap*

I'd have to say my fav is Kingstar's
I'm not much of a fan of "scene" skins..they're neat for a little while, but then I lose interest
and, of course, xeno's isn't finished, but, even if it was, I think it'd be too complex for me

/me think's playlist track #95 is apt for this contest

What? are you using those old-fashioned crutches?
Use forearm crutches!
http://www.hphdhelp.org/crutches.htm

P.S. Fortunately, I've never needed them, but my sister did once, and we bought them. I guess they've been the most used objects in our family since then. I wouldn't believe how often someone (an uncle, a cousin, a friend...) needs them and borrows them for a month!

I've had crutches twice, once for a fractured ankle and 3rd degree sprain*, and the second time for an aggravation of that same injury a couple of years later. Crutches are terrible. I've never tired the forearm ones, but they sound like something worth trying.

*I love the way the physio tested to see the severity of the sprain: He wrenched my shin under his arm, grabbed hold of my foot then bent the crap of it in a direction it wasn't supposed to go, then said "yup. It's a 3rd degree sprain". "How do you know? What's a 3rd degree sprain?" "It's when the nerves have been torn off the ankle - if it was less than a 3rd degree sprain, you would have been screaming in agony when I did that." Wonderful.

Congrats, simon, I'm glad my skin didn't win. Because I just couldn't live with myself knowing I had made a winning skin. (Well, plus your skin's a helluva great skin. Great trees and thermometers.) Good job to everyone else, too, all were great skins.

Hmmmmm, perhaps I'll somehow work that medal into flatmatt.com.

Uh, ahem, simon? Am I the only one for whom the animated cursors are broken? They're like 64x64 scrambled thingies. Are they made to be 32x32?

Congrats to simon and all the entrants! It's nice to see 5 skins so different from each other. I like all five of them.

JB - I hope your recuperation is speedy and painless. I fractured my foot playing basketball in 7th grade (actually, I sprained it - the fracture was self-inflicted during my 1.5 hour wait for x-rays). I had crutches. It was February. There was two feet of snow and a thick layer of ice between my crutches and the ground. It was miserable getting to and from school. I know you don't have any snow to deal with, so I will give you one word of advice: Beware wet linoleum!

Seriously....

/When I activate simon's cursors on my computer, I can see they look garbled for a few seconds before my whole system crashes.

Yes, your cursors, other than titlebar and normal, seem to be cropped only to their actual size, which is a definite no-no, simon. Breaks computers quite often. Cursors must ALWAYS be 32x32, or else they will definitely cause problems.

Well, I'm off to do English homework. I have to watch TV. I hate TV. TV sucks.

... which is okay with you, right simon? I mean, wouldn't want to infringe on anyone's copyrights or anything.

Another issue with Snowflake, Simon... The playlist borders don't match the eq and main ones...

By the way, xmms (linux's winamp) accepts winamp skins, but I can't enjoy mikro, minibrowser, avs or cursors

Just as a side note, these skins look great on a dark background as well, really brings out the details, just noticed as I've switched forum stlyes for NSDN

well while we're letting people know of bugs, I think flatmatt's has got the Mikro pause bug (see Skinner's Atlas)

Congrats all. Personally I think zima could hasve won if it had a better eq.
Now lets not have a contest for some time. Too many contests recently.

It does not have the Mikro pause bug. It's fixed if you've got pixel switch and pixel-80 mode unchecked. Evil MikroAMP legacy bugs...
