Winamp 5 allways crashes, when the user is not admin (Windows XP pro)
How can a non-admin user (WIndows XP pro) use WInamp 5.0 (it allways crashes a few seconds after starting)?

I don't really if this helps, but try it.
Search for the winamp.ini file in winamp installation directory and make it writable. (you'll need admin rights). I hope it works. Also: try to uninstall all the 3rd party plugins. And tell me the error log. (A screeshot of the error screen) |

Winamp 5 requires read/write access to more than just winamp.ini
studio.xnf stores all modern skin settings. gen_ml.ini and plugins\ml dir store the media library settings/database. More here Ideally, Winamp needs read/write access to the entire Program Files\Winamp dir. If you installed support for CD Burning & Ripping, then it also requires access to the Sonic Engine files in the %System% dir. If you installed video support then it also requires access to video/audio codecs & direct show filters in the %system% dir. Basically, multi-user support is one of the items in the official wishlist. I guess for now, you could install Winamp 5 to the "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users" dir, instead of Program Files. Either that, or make sure Program Files\Winamp has read/write permissions. Or just install it multiple times to each users' Documents folder (eg. "C:\Documents and Settings\(Username)\Winamp"). |

Works fine...
Thank you very much. I just moved the Winamp-folder into Shared Documents (so all Users have rights to write&read) and now it works with every user.

Well, I am using Windows XP Home Edition and have the same problem. Winamp crashes and and the media library cannot initalize its database. I will try the solution posted here with the shared documents folder right away. But isn't there a better way to solve this problem? It's just a workaround so a multi-user installation would be much better.
Is there a way to make the winamp folder writable to all users (not only the admins) in WinXP Home? |

I have the same problem and I tried the solution of installing it to the All Users folder and it still didn't work. I ended up just using the NTFS permissions to give that user access to read/write to the folder. The only problem I have is that I also have another user with the same problem but they are not using NTFS?? How do I give that person the ability to read/write to the folder when I don't have that option?
Thanks for any help. Mavv |

thank you
Just wanted to let you know thank you - my helpdesk did an update (yippee) last night and I haven't had access to winamp all day. They (the professionals) didn't know how to fix it, but I was able to do it myself. Very empowering. hehe THANKS!!

sorry for bringing this old thread up, but just to make sure I understood this correctly ... I know how to set file rights for the winamp-folder as to make sure also restricted users can run winamp! If I only want restricted users to be able to use winamp to play audio-files, will I have to adjust the rights you mentioned above? It would be fine for me, if the restricted accounts couldn't use the ripping-features. If not, which files exactly would I have to grant which file-rights, in order for winamp to work properly with restricted user-accounts? Looking forward to your answer, Manfred. |
