10 Dirtiest Foods That Can Make You Sick

Open your refrigerator. Take a good look inside. Chances are you have some of the dirtiest--and most dangerous--foods in there. Eat them and you could get very sick. Men's Health magazine has identified the 10 dirtiest foods--from bad burgers and dangerous deli meats to hazardous health foods.

The Dirty 10:
1. Chicken
In one study cited by Men's Health, more than 40 percent of chicken samples contained bacteria that can sicken, including E. coli.

2. Ground Beef
Simply because of the way ground beef is made through heavy processing, it has the potential to be loaded with deadly E. coli bacteria and more.

3. Ground Turkey
One in four packages of ground turkey tested by Men's Health contained bacteria. This becomes a greater concern as more people substitute ground turkey for ground beef thinking it's a healthier alternative.

4. Oysters
Beware of raw oysters! Many are tainted not only with bacteria, but also the Norovirus.

5. Eggs
The incredible edible egg is also associated with more than 600,000 cases of food poisoning each year and more than 300 deaths. Cook eggs completely and never eat them raw.

6. Cantaloupe
Cantaloupe rinds often contain dangerous bacteria that are hard to wash away. Cut through that rind with a knife and the bacteria can be transferred to the fruit.

7. Peaches
This favorite juicy summer fruit is dangerous because the peach fuzz makes it difficult to clean off all the pesticides.

8. Pre-Packaged Tossed Salads
These bagged salads are one of the greatest conveniences of the past decade, but they can also be one of the biggest sources of food poisoning since the contents are often contaminated with E. Coli, according to Men's Health.

9. Cold Cuts
It looks like delicious shaved ham or turkey to you. But it could contain the dangerous bacteria Listeria, which is especially risky for infants and the elderly. Listeria can be spread by the deli slicer, and it can even grow in a cold refrigerator. What can you do? Experts advise you to transfer the deli meat to a fresh package when you get home and only buy enough for one week at a time.

10. Scallions
If these green onions are left uncooked, they have the potential to become bacterial breeding grounds. They've also been linked to fatal outbreaks of Hepatitis-A.

What I've been eating for many years now, and the only times I ever get sick are from some mysterious air-bourne stomach virus, not from any of the listed above food items...

I'm not going to die if I continue eating chicken, will I?

well I just took a look inside my fridge. The only thing in there that is on the list is eggs.

items in my fridge:
12 pack of pepsi
13 slices of kraft cheese
3 eggs
a weird life form thing wrapped in aluminum foil (I don't know how long it's been there but I'm sure it's on the lease)
a bunch of half used bottles of condiments

I really should go shopping

Eggs - you're supposed to cook them before you eat them.
Chicken - same deal. Cook it before you chow down. Make sure there's no blood when you cut it.
Hamburger (Ground Beef) - Hamburger should reach an inner temperature of at least 160 degrees before you can safely eat it. A lot of people who order thier hamburger rare are really putting themselves at risk.
Turkey Burger - Inner temperature as far as I know, isn't as high as beef, but it's still a good idea to get it at least medium well done so you're not eating the shit raw towards the middle.
Peaches - Most fruits and vegetables are dirty when they are at the store. You're supposed to rinse them off first.
Cantaloupe - Who eats the rind?
Oyster - Seafood, let alone raw seafood? gah.
Cold Cuts - I work in a grocery store and worked in the deli for nearly a year. I never caught anything, but I don't eat lunchmeat often anymore. Why? Delis are dirty. Slicers sit a long while before they are cleaned. If you want clean food, you are not eating at a deli.
Bagged salad - Bagged salad isn't as tasty as fresh salad. It's a known fact. Fuck bagged salad.
Scallions - Grow in my back yard and taste good. They go well in omelettes. Of course, I cook them, though.

Interestingly, most of the contagions in these products don't have to be in there. In fact, for a price increase of about 1-2% (iirc) you could have completely safe meat. The meat companies, however, are happy the way things are, and would rather you didn't know that, though.

Also, a lot of the contagions in these things come from the fact that the animal's feces typically remains in the meat in a surprisingly high percentile.

The Jungle is based on the meat industry during the early 1900's. As a result, the FDA was created and so was the mandatory refridgeration of meat.

So not as much of that occurs today.. as far as I know.

Many moons ago, I worked at D*****' Donuts. Don't even ask about how much dirt, bugs, and crap they have in them!

For example: Dutch Crumb topping: age the unsaleable dounts in the back room till you can break concrete with them. Blow off the dust, grind them up with cinnamon & sugar, and coat fresh donuts with the result.

Indeed - mine gets disgraceful as I have to be out to react to a crisis, dropping everything and going out on the road - it's good when that happens on a Friday, leaving the coffee cup to moulder all weekend!

The above foods have been nothing but nice to me, so feeling somewhat brave on my semester abroad last fall...I had a shot of snakes blood in Vietnam (we are talking fresh blood, they cut the damn things head off at the table and drained the still squirming body into a glass. The head the still trying to bite people too). I also had a whole fried scorpion in China. Those two things were the absolute WORST things I've ever had (I'm surprised I'm not dead). Every time I watch Fear Factor, I laugh at those poor bastards.

By the way, I'm not as fucked up as the post lets on...just alitte dim

You've got to be an idiot to slice yourself on a slicer. Really, if you're too stupid to realise that there is a giant moving blade slicing the meat and you ought to keep your hands, feet, and testicles away from it, you deserve every second of it's agonizing pain.

Rings bells:

quote:
“This one was actually documented in a medical journal -- I’ve also found
a reference to it while surfing on WWW (World Wide Web)...
The man went to the emergency room complaining of problems “down there.”
He refused to accept treatment from any of the female nurses. Upon exam,
one of the man’s testicles was missing. His scrotum was swollen,
somewhere in the range of a tennis ball, and was oozing... He explained
this to the E.R.: He worked at a local factory which had a big drum
sander in it. During his lunch, he would masturbate by rubbing his penis
against the side of the (operating) sander. About three days prior, he
slipped, and his scrotum had come in contact with the sanding belt. The
belt ripped one testicle off. The man used an industrial staple gun to
try to staple the avulsion closed, then wrapped the entire area with a
gauze bandage. X-rays revealed several staples still in the sack. When
surgery was performed, the rusting staples were removed. Ouch!
