No, it is a seperate program. But it normalizes your MP3s and works in EVERY player.

MP3gain is what I used to normalize over 1700 songs and it works great...Now if I could only find a batch equalizer to be able to equalize more than one song at a time and save back to my hard drive I would be set

I usually find it best to normalise with replaygain as this does not edit the audio file itself, but instead adds a replagain comment in the tag.

To normalise my files I use foobar2000 (best to choose album method if you are doing full albums, as this will keep the sound differences in the tracks intact). I'd recommend reading about replaygain: URL submitted by user. to see why it is so widely recommended by hifi enthusiasts.

To play back the normalised file in winamp use the Shibatch input plugin (just make sure to take .MP3 out of the list in the Nullsoft plugin). As Shibatch has no id3 editor make sure you install mp3infp too!

What is the difference between normalizing and gain ?

I currently use a program called BPM for music in my bar. I has an AGC which adjusts each track (on the fly) so that volume stays at roughly the same level.

In looking to switch to Winamp, I am looking for a similar feature. I see that Winamp itself doesnt have this functionality, however there is talk of an external program, MP3Gain, which levels out the volume of tracks.

There is also talk of normalization which is different (and I believe handled by a plugin within Winamp??).

Can someone guide me?? What is the difference in what these do?

All I want is smooth, constant volume.

ReplayGain is NOT the same as normalizing.
ReplayGain is based on the overall perceived loudness of a track/album, normalization is peak-based.

Just imagine a rather quiet track with some loud peaks followed by a rather constantly loud song.
If you normalize those two songs, the volume of both is adjusted to a peak level of e.g. 98%. But you still want to grab the volume knob, because the perceived loudness of the second song is much higher. ReplayGain addresses this issue and calculates the perceived loudness of each track. The amount of dB the loudness differs from a standard value (standard is 89dB) is stored in the file's tag and applied only when playing, whereas normalising always is a 'lossy' process, because audio data is altered irreversibly.

ReplayGain has an album mode, too, which keeps dynamics between songs (just compare a normalized Pink Floyd album to the original, then you probably don't want every song to be equally loud).

Just google or try hydrogenaudio.org for more information.

My advice: even if it sounds tempting to normalize, consider ReplayGain.

PS: On-the-fly normalizer (output plugins ect) are NO alternative to 2-pass methods, because they can't predict loudness, they alter a song's volume with different values throughout one song. In fact they kill song dynamics.

PPS: For using ReplayGain (RG) with Winamp, you need a software calculating the RG values (e.g. foobar2000 a.k.a. fb2k) and (at least up to WA 5.22) another input plugin (in_mpg123.dll), because WA's in_mp3.dll still does not support reading (and writing of course) ReplayGain tags.

PPPS: An alternative to ReplayGain is mp3gain, which uses the same method as RG to calculate a song's loudness, but it alters the mp3-file directly in a lossless, reversible (unless you kill a file's ape-tag which contains the undo information) way.

I wanna be able to set the volume of my videos to stay at a constant (or close to) volume. The reason being is that I like to leave them playing at night but the theme tunes are always loads loader than the rest so can often wake me up.

I don't know of any application can can do it from a video file. I would demux the audio and then apply the necessary gain to it then mux it back into the video file. But it sounds like you want dynamic range compression making the louder parts quieter and the quieter parts louder. I think this can only be done by reencoding the file.
