Skipping in playlist, sometimes bombs out

I have v 5.08e installed on Win XP SP2.

I am playing exclusively mpc (musepack) files. They have been replaygained, if that is relevant.

I have a playlist set up, and play that with randomise on.

Quite often winamp will, between tracks, make a horrible sound like it's skipping over a number of tracks, or fastwording one track, you know the type of sound I mean?

Usually it recovers, and after a few seconds will settle into playing the new track.

Occasionally, though, it'll just stop (not crash, just stop), and I have to select play again.

It sounded similar to another thread on this forum about stopping after a few seconds. But I ran Hijack This and didn't find the "problem" winhlp.dll, or whatever it was, in there. I'm attaching my HJT log file in case it shows up some other problem.

Has anyone got any ideas?

Let me know if you need more info.

I tried a complete re-install, to no avail.

Oh, and I have my wife's user account set up with another installation of winamp, since that (I gather) was the only way for her to have her own playlists and so on. I just did that by copying the relevant winamp exes into her My Doc folder, so it's a separate thing entirely. Thing is, her version doesn't seem to skip, just mine.

Thanks,

Mike

With a very quick & hasty look at you HjT log, I could not find any red flags.

Try the DirectSound config tweaks. Close Winamp, Window and reboot the computer after making the DS tweaks.

Otherwise, it might be a issue with the third party MPC (Musepack) plug-in you are using.

Please do not PM me for tech support. Any request for tech support through PM will be ignored.

Which plugin are you using? Is it this MusePack (MPC) 3rd-party authored plugin that's listed in the Most Requested Features / Plug-ins Sticky thread?

If both the DirectSound output tweaks that JonnyMac recommended and a completely clean install of Winamp with absolutely no 3rd-party authored plugins (including Musepack) and/or no 3rd-party authored skins installed don't help, then I don't know what else to tell you. Winamp should work fine in that case, when playing all other default/supported file formats (other than MPC).

If the problem reoccurs after reinstalling the Musepack plugin, then try posting for help at the 3rd-party plugin author's Musepack forum. We don't support any 3rd-party authored plugins here, especially if they interfere with Winamp performance. In that case, look for an update from the author that might address this problem.

Don't email or PM me concerning Winamp. Instead, either start a NEW TOPIC or post a REPLY in the appropriate thread in these forums. This will also benefit others who may have a similar question or problem. But before posting, please first Search the forums and read all FAQs and all Sticky threads.

Hi JonnyMac. Thanks for your reply. At present I can only access the "problem" winamp setup over the network to tried this out (can see but I can't hear!). Certainly there doesn't appear to be any "pause" when starting each new track, which there was when skipping occured, so fingers crossed.

I'll post an update once I can actually hear what is going on

Thanks again,

Mike

OK, JonnyMac and Nunzio390, a BIG thank you for your help. I've had a chance to check it out properly now, and your suggestion seems to have hit the spot, JonnyMac... it's working fine now.

Winamp and musepack ROCK!

Thanks,

Mike
