5.2 - Skipping Songs

Since I updated my Winamp to the lastest 5.2 version about a week ago, it keeps skipping my songs. I have it on shuffle and it will play the first few seconds of a song and then suddenly it will skip through to lots of different songs in the playlist and it'll keep doing that until I click on the icon in the system tray and it steadies up. Also, usually, it will play a few songs in my playlist before the shuffle stops but now sometimes it might play 5 songs instead of maybe 15 and then it has already finished the playlist! Never had this problem before so I don't understand what's going on! Thanks ..hope this makes some kind of sense

Please provide more infos about your system, are you running any third party plugin, so list the plugins.

Also try a clean install of Winamp.

playlist skipping around

I am having the same problem. I did not have any problems with the old winamp. I downloaded 5.2 and my playlist will start playing .5 second clips of songs or some songs not at all. The taskbar shows the track numbers count up until winamp finds a song it likes and then it will play it. It doesn't do it all the time, but usually after I have listened to a couple songs. It does do the same thing in shuffle mode and you can see the numbers in the taskbar jump around until it finds a song it wants to play.

I did the clean install, and I know all the links are good because I cleared the playlist and readded all my files.

I don't exactly know what information you need on my system, but it is a dell inspiron 600m running windows xp. I don't have any 3rd party plugins.

You could try these DirectSound output tweaks.

If that doesn't help...
What file format are the files? Mp3/wma/cd/etc...
Any difference in behaviour between different formats?

As for system info, see here.

If you're bored go here or, if the boredom is more serious, here.

I had actually done the DirectSound output tweaks before my original post. It has been mainly happening with .wma files. I have not been listening to too many mp3s, but after listening to some of them today they look like they are working fine. I will repost if something changes.

You know, I just downloaded 5.2 last night. And already I too am having this same problem exactly as people have been describing it. This is really annoying the hell out of me. And I'm with asphyxiating, is there somewhere where I can get v5.1 back?

I tried the DirectSound output tweaks as well and they don't work. All my files are WMA so maybe it's something with that. I just don't like 5.2 anyway, looked everywhere for 5.1 and I can't find anywhere else to download it back???

Are you playing WMA files as well?

Ok, so 5 of you in this thread are experiencing this problem, but not one of you has provided any additional helpful info, not even what your Windows OS is.

Is the problem just with WMA playback and no other formats, for all 5 of you?

If WMA only, then are these files drm-protected?
ie. do they require a license to play them
(eg. they will if they were purchased from some online store like Napster or Walmart, or if they were encoded by Windows Media Player with the 'copy protect music' option checkmarked in Options > Rip Music tab).

Do they play ok if you go to:
Winamp > Prefs > Plugins > Input:
Windows Media Decoder v3.1 (in.wm.dll) > Configure
Remove WMA from the 'Filetypes' Extension List (hi-lite WMA, click 'Remove')
Click Save
and then go to:
DirectShow Decoder (in_dshow.dll) > Configure
and add ;WMA to the Extension List in there?

Note, DirectShow Decoder doesn't support drm-protected wma files, heh.

If not, then do they play ok if you use an older version of in_wm.dll ?

http://sawgweb.com/sawgstuff/winamp5/in_wm_5112.exe = in_wm from 5.112
http://forums.winamp.com/attachment....postid=1602176 = in_wm from 5.08d
http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....48#post1350048 = in_wm.dll from 5.02
http://sawgweb.com/sawgstuff/winamp5/in_wm_old.zip = in_wm from 2.5

Please remember to include Windows OS, Regional Locale (OS language) and Windows Media Player version in your reply, and if relevant, whether you allowed the Winamp Installer to install the Windows Media 9.1 codecs (as represented by the "Codecs and system libraries: Download and install (if required)" setting on Screen 6 of the installer options).

For the record, I've got about 20 (non-protected) wma files (hate the damn format) out of my full library of ~15,000 (mainly mp3, ogg, aac/m4a, flac) and all 20 of them play perfectly ok in 5.2 (WinXP sp2, English UK locale, WiMP10)

I've got WinXP sp2, English US, Windows Media Player 10.00.00.3990 and I allowed the codecs to be installed.

I was able to get the unprotected WMA's to play normally using -
"Winamp > Prefs > Plugins > Input:
Windows Media Decoder v3.1 (in.wm.dll) > Configure
Remove WMA from the 'Filetypes' Extension List (hi-lite WMA, click 'Remove')
Click Save
and then go to:
DirectShow Decoder (in_dshow.dll) > Configure
and add ;WMA to the Extension List in there?"

That seems to have fixed the problem of running through my playlist for my unprotected WMA (ripped from RioAudio). Thanks. However, some of my files are write protected (downloaded from mmjb), is there any way to play these songs with that change?

Nope, only the new in_wm.dll from v5.08e to 5.2 supports drm-protected wma's
and the one from 5.12 and higher also supports drm-protected WMV.

This also happens to me quite often, using playlists and albums I have played without problem in previous versions of Winamp. These playlists are predominantly mp3s, though there are .wmas in there too.

Considering this has only started happening since I upgraded to 5.2, I think it's pretty clear it's an error with Winamp.

The Directshow encoder worked for me, it doesn't seem to be skipping much except occasionally it will repeat the first few seconds of a song. I still want to go back to an older version though as now it's not reading my tags properly..all my albums have disappeared and only my most recent songs are shown in audio now, all the rest are in local media..also any artists with punctuation are cut off like hard-fi became hard..i have no idea what's going on! lol

By the way, i'm on WinXP (no SP) and have MessengerAmp plug-in and Audioscrobbler but none of these have disturbed me in the past so I don't see why they should now. 5.2 is obviously full of bugs!!

Thanks for your help anyway xxx

Yeah, that's because you made DirectShow the default WMA handler.
The Media Library assumes all filetypes handled by in_dshow to be video types.
You can reconfigure the Local Media > Audio and Video views accordingly, eg.

Audio = (type = 0) OR (filename ends wma)
Video = (type = 1) AND !(filename ends wma)

But yeah, in_dshow doesn't support metadata, so it won't even read the WMA tags.
This will then make the Library attempt to guess the metadata (according to the setting in Prefs > Media Library > Watch Folders > Configure), and a hyphen is seen as a field separator (you can disable this behaviour by selecting 'no guessing' but then all you'll get is the filename for the title).

In other words, using the DirectShow Decoder for WMA is not recommended as the permanent solution to whatever problem you are experiencing here. I only mentioned it for troubleshooting purposes, to see if in_dshow played the WMA files ok.

There's been a few in_wm.dll bugfixes applied for 5.21,
so let us know if the problem still persists after 5.21 release.

Note that we still can't reproduce the problem.
All WMA files (whether drm-protected or not) play fine here.

I had the problem after upgrading to 5.2 as well. I was playing DRM2 (subscription) downloads from Yahoo Music Unlimited. The problem was not that the files wouldn't play. The problem was that when playing a playlist, songs would skip seemlingly randomly. I don't think this happened when using forward and back controls -- only when the songs were naturally playing in a playlist.

I uninstalled Winamp 5.2 and did a fresh install of Winwamp 5.21, and the problem has not occurred since.

This problem has reared its ugly head only once since I installed 5.21, and so I think that this latest occurence may just have been a random error/my computer messing about rather than due to a bug in Winamp.

Cheers for fixing it!

I'm having the same problem as everyone else here. And along with yirmey, it's not a problem playing the song. When you've got a large playlist or are just doing a random shuffle, songs get skipped. But if you press the skip backward button, the song that was skipped will play.

This is happening with 5.21 as well.

My boyfriend and I are also having the same problems. We both have XP Home and had no problems before 5.2. Now we're both noticing that Winamp jumps songs, or won't play our playlists properly. Basically, I still have the 5.13 set-up file, so I re-installed that and am having no problems playing entire song lists without skipping.

Yes I have been having this problem also. After I upgraded, when playing large playlists (500+songs) as I normally do, Winamp randomly skips between 2-5 songs. I also stream my music via shoutcast so my only concern is the people lisntening hearing 1-2 seconds of 2 or more songs. I have a machine running Win XP Pro. Nothing has changed since I upgraded and it only happened after I had upgraded.

The first issue is that I have songs I wripped off a CD that are in mp3 format that don't always play. Winamp tries to play them and then fails and moves on to the next song. I have checked the file paths and they are all correct. Why is this?

The second is that I have problems playing .wma files. I have done all the steps in here :
http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=190505 yet I am still unable to play the song.

Dell 2400
512 mb RAM/2.4 Ghz Celeron
As far as I am aware I have on board sound and graphics :P
Windows XP service pack 2
Direct X 9.0
Winamp version 5.08
Can't remember which installation type I had. I know I didn't pay for it!

Thank you for your help!!!
