Loud hiss after unpausing playback

Hi. Using Winamp v.5.2, when I pause an MP3 file (any any filetype as far as I'm aware), and then click the play/pause button again to continue playback, all I get back from Winamp is a loud hiss of inteference. I then have to pause it again and unpause again to continue playback correctly.

Skipping to a certain point in the song also solves the problem. The problem only occurs when I pause and directly unpause playback.

I use onboard Soundmax digital audio on an Asus A8N-VM CSM motherboard.

Can anybody offer a solution to this? I'm sure I can't be the only person with this problem, although it would seem that way after scouting the Net and this forum for hours.

I've been a die-hard Winamp v.2 user until a few weeks ago, for the main reason v.2 works! And this has just proved me right to stick with v.2 all this time. Somebody please prove me wrong though!

You could try these DirectSound output tweaks.

Did you install any 3rd-party plugins?
And if so, which ones?
Using any DSP plugins?

It only happens with mp3 files, or other formats as well?

It happens with all file formats. I only have some visualisation plugins installed which are:

Acidspunk II
Eonic 0.2
MilkDrop 1.04d
Monkey 1.0
Smoke 1.06
Tripex3 3.12

Prefs (Ctrl+P) > Plug-ins > Output
Do you have DirectSound selected? Did you try the tweaks linked to above?

Also please provide additional system specs.

I had the same problem. I went into the preferences and diabled the fade in and out option on pausing.

Winamp -> Prefs (Ctrl+P) -> Plugins -> Output -> DirectSound -> config-> fading

It works fine now.

after using it more,I realize that it isn't fine. It just seemed to be fixed for the short time directly after i played with the configurations.

Now it still does the noise of static, only it seems to be less predictable. It used to predictably be:
pause, unpause-static
pause again, unpause-back to normal

just now i paused, unpaused-static
paused again, unpaused-static
did it again and again.
then i gave up, stopped the song and started it again. that worked, but i wasn't very happy about it.

Sorry I didn't notice you mentioned to mess about with the Direct Sound settings.

I just disabled the fade on pause/stop and it works fine now. I was thinking it was probably to do with the fade plugin disagreeing with the Soundmax software or something. Anyway, thanks for the solution.

Disabling the "Fade on pause/stop" did work for me, too.

I have an Asus A8R-MVP with ADI AD1986A SoundMAX on board and the latest drivers (V5.10.01.4151) from the Asus-page.

Same Problem

Setup:
Asus M2NPV-VM - onboard GF 6200 vid, Soundmax sound
Athlon X2 3800
2Gb Ram
Clean install of XP SP2, Direct X 9.0c
All latest ASUS drivers installed
Clean install of Winamp 5.3, no plugins installed

Problem:
Winamp plays Static when unpausing. Re-pausinging and unpausing fixes until you pause again.

Tried:
All above settings changes. No luck
Disabling fading removes makes the static on unpause occur randomly, sometimes more than others.

Solution that seems to work: (WFM YMMV)
Disable "Allow hardware acceleration" on the device tab in DirectSound settings.

Would it be worth taking up the issue with ASUS / SoundMax?

P.S. apologies for reviving an old thread when there was a newer one that touched on the same issue.

I've since found that there is a later version of the SoundMax drivers (version 4570) that work for the soundmax chip on my mobo (Analog Devices SoundMax AD1986A). This driver is not explicitly for the AD1986, instead it's for the AD1988, but it works so far

I have the same problem. I can't install 4570 as it is not compatible. I have an asus M2NPV-VM. I tried changing the directsound settings but they only cured the problem temporarily. I am running the most up to date drivers from the asus site: (4151). I can't believe they have not fixed quite a fundamental problem. Anyone else have any suggestions?

I may have found a solution:

preferences -> plugins -> output -> directsound -> config -> fading

tick "old style fade on pause"

So far so good. It may come back to haunt me but I can't recreate it like I used to.

what works is going to device manager and uninstalling soundmax then going up to top and going to action > scan for hardware changes then windows will install it's own driver
