Error message appears when I try to open Winamp

Ever since I upgraded to the new version, I have had a problem with Winamp. Almost every single time I open it, I get this error message:

quote:
Winamp has enocountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost.

For more information about this error, click here.

quote:
AppName: winamp.exe AppVer: 5.2.0.473 ModName: icm32.dll
ModVer: 5.0.0.0 Offset: 00003b04

I'm not sure exactly what all my specs are so I'll give you what I can, quoted directly from my System Properties:

quote:
Gateway, Inc.
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 1.80 GHz
1.79 GHz
256 MB of RAM

I am also on Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002, Service Pack 1.

The only way I've found to temoporarily solve this problem is to reinstall... and I've reinstalled countless times over the past couple of weeks. It stops working again after a while, though, so I have to reinstall over and over...

I've tried restarting my computer, didn't help. I've also tried downgrading, which didn't work either. I did not have this problem until I upgraded to the newest version.

Please help, I'm tired of having this problem. All I want is to use Winamp normally again.

When you reinstall do you uninstall completely then reinstall.....that might fix it if not

Okay, I'll try that and see if it still works after a while. I'll come back and post whether or not it worked. (I'm surprised I didn't think to do that... guess I'm just too used to installing right over Winamp.)

EDIT: Seems to have worked. Thanks!

Does the problem still occur when you disable the Portable Media Player plugin? It's the ml_pmp.dll file in the Winamp plugins folder (C:\Program Files\Winamp\plugins).
Close Winamp, go to the Winamp plugins folder and change the file extension from .dll to .off
You may need to configure Windows to show file extensions:
http://nunzioweb.com/misc/show_file_extensions.htm
To re-enable the plugin, change extension back to .dll

THANK YOU. I think this is working but once again I'll have to come back later and say whether or not it did.

Anyways, it stopped working... again. Darn, I thought that would do it. Any other suggestions?

You did not install any 3rd-party plugins in the meantime?

Try upgrading to the latest version: 5.21.

Also please provide additional system specs.

I just upgraded to 5.2.1, and am getting the same problem. This sucks, because I didn't save a copy of the old player.

I had the much the same problem with Yahoo Messenger when I upgraded it, which would occur when it tried to access the internet, but couldn't get through my firewall. It fixes itself when it can open the socket back to yahoo.com. I suspect that it is a (simple?) null-pointer indexing problem.

Why, oh why, don't programmers check for null pointers? The problem's been around for decades.

Is anyone from WinAmp monitoring this section?

If so, I will include the bug report generated from windows.

Hopefully the dump file is attached. View it with notepad (because it's really not a text file).

Update: the file didn't go through - probably because of all the imbedded binary. anyway the error specs:
AppName: winamp.exe AppVer: 5.2.1.497 ModName: icm32.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.2709 Offset: 0000433c

I propose to you every time you want to upgrade your winamp to latest version you download full version of one winamp.
For example:You downloaded winamp5.21 full after winamp5.21 will come newest version of winamp. you don't need to download full version of winamp again. Just download lite version.
Lite version is match & you don't have this problem.
I had this problem but after a long time I undrestand when I download lite version I have not this problem.
I don't know maybe I am in mistake or it's true.

Well, when I tried the lite version, I didn't get the error, but then none of the features worked, i.e. Media Library. Not sure how to fix this issue.

I still have the suspicion that this is somehow related to the Portable Media Support plugin, but I'm not sure...
Did you try disabling/removing that plugin, as suggested above?

Other plugins you could try disabling...
ml_xpdxs.dll (Predixis Music Manager)
ml_wire.dll (SHOUTcast Wire, podcast support)

Feedback would be appreciated.

Do you have any 3rd-party plugins installed?

Wow, I came back and all these people had posted... sort of surprised me...

At least other people are having the same problem as me. Shows that maybe there is something wrong with the latest update...

Well, I gave you all the specs I could (when I made my original post, I was looking at that post and giving all the specs I could find. A lot of these I didn't know how to get to.

Also, I have only ever installed one third-party plugin, and that was a long time ago, and while it never gave me any trouble, I uninstalled it.

I have disabled all the plugins you said to disable and I am still having this problem. I really don't want to resort to upgrading to lite because I don't want to lose all those functions.

I just tried to reinstall the newest version and it didn't work at all, not once.

EDIT: I installed an older version from oldversion.com and it works okay, but I'm betting that it's going to stop working and I'll have to reinstall it again.

It may indeed be something with the new update, I really ain't sure. Some users reported that disabling the Media Library (gen_ml.dll) made the problem go away, others said that just removing the Portable Media Player plugin made the crash disappear (which is why I suggested that, but apparently your crash is caused by something else).

One user reported that updating the video card drivers fixed the issue, so you could try that:
http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=239111

This user reported that the crash didn't occur when using the classic skin instead of the modern:
http://forums.winamp.com/showthread...516#post1873516

Are you using the modern skin? If so, are you using any desktop enhancing utilities, perhaps? (like Samurize, WindowsBlinds, etc.)
These sometimes tend to conflict with the Winamp modern skin engine.

All info provided may give a clue. A HijackThis log may give some insight.

The last time I tried to update my graphics driver (I have Nvidia like that other person) some really weird stuff happened and now I can't play any games with 3D graphics. Gee, the more I talk about my computer, the more it sounds like I need a new one, which I pretty much refuse to get... I suppose I could try re-updating and see what happens.

Well, I am using a modern skin right now, but when I installed it I had picked a classic one. Still didn't work. No desktop enhancing things either.

EDIT: I can't seem to find the driver update I need to download that matches up with my graphics driver. My settings list it as "NVIDIA GeForce2 MX 100/200". I've tried finding the updates on the website but I can't figure out which one it is. I've downloaded a couple and tried to use them but each one said it hadn't passed the compatibility test or something like that for XP.

I just installed it and restarted... I'm not sure if it worked or not but I was able to open Winamp okay... if the problem persists later on, I'll come back.

I solved this problem by upgrading to the latest of latest Winamps. Not sure what the issue was.

i still have this problem in the new Winamp 5.24, i have to goback to 5.13 to get "media libery" to work. all other versions crashes.

I dont use any 3rd party plugins. And I always do clean installations in new directories. And I only use the classic interface.

i have a ATI graphic card and using the latest 6.6 drivers.

I had the same problem, but mine only happened after installing the plugin in_NSFten.dll but it has worked before. It seems to be incompatible with v5.24 for some odd reason. Yes, I had the same message as above, so it seems that I'll have to try using a different NSF plugin and see if that works.

For solving this problem you must to eradicate winamp completely from add/remove programs in control panel or remove it in program files.

It will be answer I test it. Some files in unistall don't delete & it is nessasary to completely eradicate in your computer completely.
Test this way I hope you to conclude.

yes really a strange problem. okay on my site, same problem:
division by zero in icm32.dll, BUT this happen only if my plugin is loaded with winamp I tried several things and don't believe that my plugin is really the problem. All older winamp versions had not this problem and if I steal WinXP the icm32.dll everything works fine again. Winamp 5.24 lite dosn't have the problem but the "full-basic" version. I made a general purp. plugin, nothing strange, some winamp remote stuff, subclassing window proc., catching informations from winamp to display them on an external LCD display. So the only critical part could be the subclassed winproc?! maybe you guys from winamp changed something, so you got trouble if someone steals you the winproc? I got already the newest sdk but haven't the time yet to watch it carefully. I need my plugin badly for my current project, so I will try to solve this problem. If I found something, or anybody has an idea ... please reply.

try 5.25 Beta. There seems to be a fix related to this in there

Fixed: [gen_ml] tree icon fixup (working around an OS bug that was causing CreateDIBSection to sometimes crash (divide-by-zero in ICM32) using V4 bitmap header struct)
