Help? Winamp fast forwards thro music...

I have used Winamp for years and never had any problems with it, but now it will automatically fast forward through about 50 songs and then finally stop and continue playing again. What should I do to fix it, and why is it doing that? Thanks!

Did you move/rename the files? This usually happens when the paths in the playlist are incorrect and Winamp can't find the files.
The files do get skipped completely, right?

If you right-click one of those files that won't play > View file info, you can see the path in the bar at the top and check if it's correct.

If you're bored go here or, if the boredom is more serious, here.

Your best bet is to reload winamp, clear the current list, load up your song folders with metadata on load, and save the new list.

It happens every once in a while to me, thats the best way to fix it.

Okay... Got it running again.

I had to do this:

Try the following DirectSound Output tweaks:

Winamp -> Prefs (Ctrl+P) -> Plugins -> Output -> DirectSound -> config:

Device tab:
-Make sure your sound card is selected as Device (c/o drop-down menu)
-Checkmark "enable hardware acceleration"

Buffering tab:
-Checkmark "enable cpu usage control"

"Normally, you would be reading some witty remark right about now. Unfortunately, we are uninspired netgeeks, so the meaning of life will have to do:

'It is like a drop of water that has risen from the sea and in a shower has fallen in a puddle, then drifts into a brook, finds its way into a stream, after that into a river, passing through mountain gorges and wide plains, winding this way and that, obstructed by rocks and fallen trees, till at least it reaches the boundless seas from which it rose. 'But that poor little drop of water, when it has once more become one with the sea, has surely lost its individuality.

'You want to taste sugar, you don't want to become sugar. What is individuality but the expression of our egoism? Until the soul has shed the last trace of that it cannot become one with the Absolute."

Your papers are now in order. You may proceed. and don't slam the door. People are sleeping here.

Thanks, wait and see...

Thanks, I followed your advice, the only one that needed changing was the "enable CPU usage control" in the buffering tab. I am postive that its not 'cause I moved files, and if this doesn't work I will use JRDNs advice. So, I suppose I will just wait and see now! Thanks for the help!

my winamp is working alright again. but one thing i discovered when it kept fasting forward was that winamp put a .wav-copy of every song i tried to play in c:\. does your winamp do the same?

You probably had 'Nullsoft Disk Writer' selected as output plugin (Prefs > Plug-ins > Output). In that case, files will not be played, but written to disk instead.

Though if wasteofpaint indeed tried your suggestion to change those settings in DirectSound output, for him that plugin should now be selected. So I guess his problem is different.

@wasteofpaint
Do you indeed have DirectSound output selected as output plugin?

What do you see when you right-click a file in the playlist > View file info? Do you see all info correctly displayed there?

What file type are your songs? (mp3/wma/etc.)
Do you have any 3rd-party plugins installed?

Also please define 'fast forward'. Do you hear any sound, or do the files get skipped as a whole?

If you're bored go here or, if the boredom is more serious, here.

Hey,

I'll define what I mean by fast forward first. My Winamp player will be playing as normal, and when it reaches an end of a song it will start flipping through a number of files. When it fast forwards through them I will either hear a millisecond of a song OR nothing at all but I can see which files are being skipped on the task bar. I haven't counted, but I believe that it can be skipping 40-50 songs generally.

My setting are set to Direct Sound for sure...
I don't think it has anything to do with the type of file they are because my Winamp will fast forward through a bunch and then I can just rewind it back to the last song it did play and it'll play the next files just fine again. But, in any case, all of my files are .mp3s...
Also there are no 3rd Party Plug-ins installed...

Thanks again, for all the suggestions.

Mmh, not sure what's going on there then...

(playback of WMA files has been problematic in the past, which is why I asked for the file format)

Have you tried a clean install?

Please provide additional system specs (read this!).
Also, please confirm you're using the latest version: 5.21.

If you're bored go here or, if the boredom is more serious, here.
