first, the latest version is 5.31 (check the stickies); and two, from the wishlist (the sticky in the winamp wishlist forum):

the computer is never at fault for an error; a human is, though.

Media Player Classic is a pretty good player for DVD's, plays VOB files too. The nice thing is it retains the mouse clickable DVD menu's, which other players do not.

I second that, Media Player Classic is the best
all-around player when it comes to DVDs and videos
in general. Highly recommended!

winamp can play vob files, if you add ;vob to the extension list in the directshow config.(and assuming you have a mpeg2 decoder)

however, like MPC there is no chapter selection or dvd decription in winamp.

hopefully this can be done one day.

Nearly all DVD's have scene selection in the root menu in addition to the extra's and any sound options. MPC allows you to access all of it, since the mouse actually works in it versus most other players where it does not. It is this mouse selection capability that makes it better than most of the rest, in addition to filter add-ons such as ffdshow and many other uniqure features it offers.
A VOB file is nothing more than DVD content that has been ripped to your harddrive, so if a player can deal with a VOB, its likely that it can also play at least one segment of a DVD. That does not mean that it can play a ripped DVD just like a DVD player can play a DVD, since there is more to it than that: The player needs to be able to interpret embeded codes in order to continue with the next VOB for natural playback. MPC does this perfectly, while many other players including Windows Media Player have problems with it. It is nearly impossible to tell the difference between playback of the original DVD from my upconverting DVD player and the playback of a DVD rip from my HTPC's harddrive using Media Player Classic.

One thing that MPC is soft on is external control by API, which is an area that Winamp certainly excel's in.

Thanks for that hint; I already knew how to add mp4 to the directshow list but never thought to do it with vob files. I thought there would be an easy way to do this, after all I can click "Play CD", why not "Play DVD". Anyhoo, I did as you suggested. However, although the video now plays, there's no sound... any suggestions?

Because Winamp doesn't support DVDs. And regardless if you have the proper decoders on your system or not that shit costs AOL money. Licensing is fun shit.
