external drive synchronization?!

Hi everyone,

just got a 250GB Elements external drive-
Winamp asked me if I wanted to synchronize it with WInamp 5.33, well i said yes, which seemed to be logical.(Doh) the external drive now blocks Winamp from playing any file when I double-click on them. Poor Winamp opens and disappears after my ext drive goes "BRRR". what's going on? Is it anything to do with synchronization? WInamp works fine when the drive's turned off, but all my music's on it. grr.
I tried disinstalling Winamp and going back to previous versions, nope.
also, I can't use WMPlayer 10 since it's now reluctant to play MP3 files for some reason- ?? thanx a lot, I feel lost without my good ol' Winamp player

yes i'm replying to myself. nevermind- after having deleted 3 plugins in the portable devices section, it's all back to normal; simple really...cheers anyway

The only plugin you needed to disable/delete was Winamp\Plugins\pmp_usb.dll

However, you could've kept pmp_usb.dll, and done the following instead:

Close Winamp
Go to the root folder of the external usb drive in Windows Explorer
Delete the files: pmp_usb.ini & winamp_cache_0001.xml
(note, these two files are hidden by default, so make sure you can view hidden files first, via Control Panel > Folder Options > View tab).

Next time you reopen Winamp, the drive will be redetected, but this time, when asked if you want Winamp to manage the drive, select 'No'.

The drive will now be added to the exclusion list in winamp.ini

Turn off autodetect for all usb drives

This from DJ Egg

"Next time you reopen Winamp, the drive will be redetected, but this time, when asked if you want Winamp to manage the drive, select 'No'.

The drive will now be added to the exclusion list in winamp.ini"
**************
That is useful, but I need to prevent Winamp autodetecting all usb drives whether or not on the exclusion list. If I want to add music from a usb drive I prefer to drag and drop it where I want it. 95% of usb drives I use do not contain music. Presume the exclusion list is called blacklist in winamp.ini?

Hopefully a simple edit of winamp.ini can do it? Or maybe there is something lurking in preferences? Ideas please. Thanks in advance!

Yes it is in Winamp.ini and it is in the pmp_usb section but it won't be easy because you will need to decipher this:
[pmp_usb]
blacklistnum=19
blacklist-0=s:-1674605335
blacklist-1=s:1283569727
blacklist-2=s:-776820022

If you just want to forbid all devices then remove pmp_usb.

Many thanks for suggestion. However, I turned off Winamp and deleted the line [pmp_usb] and the 27 blacklist rows (after saving an unedited version in case of problems). But when I rebooted Winamp, the blacklist reappeared at the end of winamp.ini. More ideas needed on how to prevent Winamp rejecting your edit of its ini file. Maybe a reboot or a reinstall?

"Toggle autodetect usb drives" would be a good option to put in Options Preferences. Maybe I will check the Winamp website for a "suggestions box".

Sorry, when I said "If you just want to forbid all devices then remove pmp_usb" I meant removing the plugin. To forbid all devices just remove that feature from winamp by un-installing the Nullsoft USB Device plugin prom the prefs or deleting pmp_usb.dll when Winamp is closed.

Yes, an option in the pmp_usb config for auto-detecting connected drives would be useful. If it defaulted to off that would prevent many newbies from pressing the wrong button when they get asked.

Thanks J_Darnley. If you uninstall pmp_usb.dll from Options Preferences Plug-ins Portable Device plug-ins, it reinstalls on reboot.

So I renamed pmp_usb.dll to pmp_usb.dll.old and that seems to work OK.

Another option which seems to work for me (so far) is to blacklist the drive under Preferences > Plugins > Portables > select the pmp_usb.dll and click <Configure selected plugin>. Then black list the drive that the flash disk boots into. If you want it to read from the drive again, you can unblacklist it.
