Reporting Bugs:

Please report any issues with the beta in this thread only.
Make sure your report is complete, according to the sticky threads in Bug Reports, ie.
Clean install, no 3rd-party plugins, full step-by-step method of reproduction, relevant system specs, exact error messages, screenshots, which skin (one of Classic, Modern, or Bento only, or all three), links to sample files, etc.
If error reports, screenshots, sample files, etc are smaller than 100kb, then please attach them to your post here. Otherwise, please upload to one of stashbox.org (recommended), mediafire.com, or sendspace.com and post the url here (no rapidshare or imageshack or similar links please).
Note that incomplete/lame bug reports may be totally ignored.

Particular areas which need testing are:
  • Winamp Bento (SingleUI skin)
  • Album Art support (view/pane in ml) & Downloader service
  • Unified File Editor (CoverArt/Advanced/Extra tabs, for mp3, flac, ogg, wma, m4a)
  • Media Library navigation tree (drag+drop items, collapse/expand, etc)
  • New ML Local Media filters/panes/config
  • New PMP filters/panes/config
  • Check for any gen_ff/skinning bugs
  • New Podcast views/features
  • CDDB2.5 features/editor
  • Playlist Generator (play tracks similar to)
  • Auto-Tagger (in Alt+3 File Info & Send To menu)
  • Redesigned Installer (all sections)

Notes:

-Alas, Winamp 5.5 is no longer compatible with Win9x (Win 98/ME),
-and all support for those OS'es has now been discontinued.
-Win2k/XP/2003/Vista are all supported.

-The new installer is not fully complete yet, and parts of it are subject to change.
-Please test thoroughly and report any typos or issues that you find.
-(see Known Issues & Beta Changelog below for more).

-Album Art support is almost complete, but not quite...
-Lookup order: embedded (in tags), %album%/cover/folder.jpg/gif/png, *.nfo file.
-Note: The cache is the art*.* files in the "Plugins\ml" folder
-(art.dat, art.idx, art60.dat/idx, art90.dat/idx, art120.dat/idx).
-Downloader access via: Art icon rt-click menu, unified file info & pmp edit info box
-Currently saves as %album&.jpg in the containing folder.
-See "Known Issues" section below for more...

-mp3surround is playback only for now (no encoding).
-You can find tracks at www.all4mp3.com/music/

-Playlist Generator (rt. click ml/pledit items > Play tracks similar to):
-Notes:
-1) Manual config via: Prefs > Plugins > Media Library > ml_plg.dll > config
-2) Initial Scan may take some time. The more files in your mldb, the longer...
-3) Obeys the Play/Enqueue as default action in ML Prefs
-4) Database stored in Winamp\Plugins\Gracenote (along with all other GN/CDDB files).
-If getting "error initializing" messages, you'll need to delete cddbplm.pdb/idx/gcf files.

-Re: Skinned ml scrollbars
-For support, Wasabi version needs to be specified as 1.3 in skin.xml, eg.
-<WasabiXML version="1.3">
-Also note that v1.3 skins no longer use the internal freetype font renderer.

__________________________________________________________________________

Known Bugs/Issues:

-New CDDB features may be a bit buggy (eg. genre saves with "General" at front)

-MPG videos might display the wrong length in pledit/ml (eg. 1:19 shows as 9:39)

-The Download Manager in Bento browser Media Monitor has no UI or config yet.
Currently auto saves to "C:\my music"

-Album Art retrieval criteria and writing/saving isn't configurable... yet!

-Alt+3 album art editor is fairly incomplete, and also won't find all album art *

-'Get Album Art' doesn't find compilations very well, and doesn't find art when album names have "notes" at the end like "Dark Angel [EP]" *

-Album Art API doesn't deal with illegal filename characters yet < : * \ " / ? | > *

-Embedded art doesn't show in Artwork tab of File Info (but displays ok in Album Art views/window/etc) *

-Station Info window is broken (blank content) *
(Note: SI window will be gone in 5.5 Final)

-Some AVS presets are broken in this build. Sorry, this is a compiler related issue and should hopefully be fixed in time for 5.5 Final **

-We were seeing reports of crashing under Vista (on exit, when switching skins, when running vis plugins, etc) with beta previews 1 and 2. These issues were mostly related to the previous 'DWM thumbnails' fix, which has now been reverted/removed. This should now mean that there are no more similar crashes. However, it also means that DWM/Flip3D will show the Classic skin again instead... ** *

-Some cbr MP3's are reported as vbr in File Info *

-Spectrum vis is a bit too wide in Bento skin update (is 78 pixels, should be 75) *

KEY
* = Fixed internally
** = Reverted (newer code or feature removed internally)

Known Installer related issues:

1) The 'Choose Language' selector is not in this build.
It will return once all the localized translations are in for 5.5 Final.

2) On upgrades, some components (parent nodes and child items) might appear in bold text, even though they were installed previously. This is because the item name has changed and is not listed in your current install.ini file.

3) The "Enable Winamp Agent" option on the "File Associations" page is not working yet.
This will be implemented & working for the final build.

4) The Winamp 'Setup' section (Choose Skin, Associations, Feedback) might not be the focused window and could be hidden under other windows when it first appears.

5) Be sure to pay attention to the 'Get the Most out of Winamp' page.

6) Weird symbols/fonts in navigation & headers of Winamp Setup section:
This is because we used Arial Unicode MS as the font, and it means you don't have that font installed on your system. We've changed it to plain Arial for 5.5 Final.

7) Re: Winamp Remote
The 'Remote Media' item under 'Choose Components' is just ml_orb.dll
The 'Winamp Remote' item (14.1mb download) on the 'Get the Most out of Winamp' screen is the full Orb package. This is the same as what was downloaded before, when you went to: ML > Online Services > Winamp Remote and signed up/downloaded the software.

8) Both the Winamp Remote and Winamp Toolbar packages have been updated as of 4th October (which address various reported bugs/issues, including a potential BSoD caused by older Winamp Remote's orbtray.exe). If you downloaded/installed them prior to this date and have any problems, then you'll need to uninstall both (ie. both have separate uninstallers in Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs) and then run the 5.5 Beta installer again to get the new Remote and Toolbar updates.

Please refer to these posts for more info:
http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....00#post2249600
http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....97#post2249697

The 2nd link contains direct download url's for the updated Remote & Toolbar downloads
(we think that the Winamp Installer may still be pulling old cached versions).

-Misc: Installer: Is now hard-coded to save settings to the User Profile %AppData%\Winamp folder on all clean installs, or if paths.ini already exists on upgrades. Otherwise, if no paths.ini exists, it will respect current settings on upgrades and still save settings to the %ProgramFiles%\Winamp folder (inidir = installdir), except for on Vista where settings are always stored in %AppData%. Naturally, if user has created their own custom paths.ini then this will also still be respected (eg. if existing paths.ini points to some custom user folder and includes other params). Also note that a create/merge multi-user type options tool is hopefully planned for 5.5 Final.

-Updated: [gen_jumpex] JTFE v0.99.1f b428 'dev' (was v0.99.1d b425 'dev' in last beta)

______________________________________________________________________________

Extra Notes

For the new installer, you can create skininfo.xml and put it inside Classic skins for preview images on the 'Choose Skin' page, eg.
code:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?>

<skininfo>
<version>Version # here</version>
<name>Skin Name here</name>
<author>Author's Name here</author>
<comment>Comments go here</comment>
<email>optional email address</email>
<homepage>optional homepage url</homepage>
<screenshot>screenshot.png</screenshot>
</skininfo>

Naturally, screenshot.png (178 x 75) also needs to be included inside the skin.

For Modern skins, refer to skin.xml in the Winamp Bento and Winamp Modern folders.

______________________________________________________________________________

Re: Player fonts looking different in some 3rd-party modern skins

Improved: [gen_ff] Support for antialias fonts from Winamp3 skins

This is actually by design. Skins can manually specify to not anti-alias fonts. Winamp3 supported this, but Winamp 5 has ignored this attribute until now. If it bothers you that much, extract the .wal file, and search the xml files for "antialias" and change the ="0" to ="1"

Hey...
Nice build

I want to report two (possible) bugs here, both in the Bento skin.

1. There is a shadow for the timer in the Main Window... So I can see half of the timer numbers "under" the timer (if you understand me).. Maybe it should be like this (its cool though), but Ill post it anyway since it may be a bug...
Do you want a screenshot?

2. This may not be so important, but Ill post it anyway... Look at the songticker in the Bento skin (when using "Classic" scroller style)..
Sometimes, the text stops a half second - Something like a "kick"... (This is NOT the same issue as the lag in the Modern Skin earlier.. I repeat, NOT).
It just scrolls, and it stop in a half second (just "tick") and keep scrolling... Very difficult to explain..
It is not so easy to see it, but I do (and it is NOT the same problems as in the Modern skin in an earlier beta)..
What do you think?

As for other things, the installer looks nice (new and fresh) and the new features are cool..
Keep up the good work... You are doing a great job

Hehe, ok.. Didnt know about that one

And for #2, I understand if you didnt understand what I meant... Heh..
If you remember the lag bug in the Modern Skin songticker earlier (not now anymore), it stopped and were pushed to the right side...
If you then look in Bento, it does the same thing WITHOUT being pushed to the right side... Maybe that was better?
Maybe there is some "padding" issues there too.. I dont know :P

Anyway, keep up the good work...
Im going to test more of the new features here...

I'm using an iPod Classic 160GB.

Just installed Beta 3, the Auto-Tag works for single tracks when I do it through the File Info window, but Send To -> Auto-Tag never works when I right click on one or multiple tracks.

The menu disappears, but nothing comes up. :/

EDIT: Another more serious problem. When I went to Eject iPod from Winamp, it said: "Failed to eject iPod. Is something else using it?".

And nothing was. So I closed Winamp, and used Safely Remove Hardware in Windows, and then disconnected the iPod. (After Ejecting, Please Wait...) disappeared from the screen.

Now my iPod says it has No Music, 0 songs. (but I can still see them in Winamp).

Can I rebuild the iPod library somehow?

Reply by TheUniqueTiger:

If you are talking about mismatched information retrieved by auto-tagger, then its already stated in the Known bugs/issues section at the start of this huge thread.
No, this is something different from the known bugs from the previous release (I think?).

For example: if I autotag Love's theme from Love unlimited autotag comes up with

Album: 70's ï¼»Disc 5ï¼½
Album artist: Various Artists
Track: 15
Disc: 5/6

While allmusic says:

Album: Rhapsody in White
Track: 8

I don't doubt that this track appears on this 70's compilation but I think that the allmusic information is much more accurate.

Hey, I found a new bug...

Reproduce:

1. Have Winamp open (with Main Window, Playlist and Equalizer)... (This is the Winamp Modern Skin).

2. Press the ML button in the Main Window (Media Library)..

3. When you press that ML button, the Media Library will appear BEHIND the other Winamp windows...
To show it, I have to click on the desktop (or another Winamp window) and then click on the Media Library (which is still behind the other windows). Then it will become over the other windows..
It should open over the other windows from the beginning.
Bug?

Install caused a blue screen:

On reboot the system would blue screen again until I went into safe mode and took OrbTray.exe out of the startup list.

Confirmed. Font issue seems to be gone with the release of Build 1600!
*crossing fingers*

Just the previously documented issue holding me back now ...
with displaying the correct Album Art for Albums with the same title
(but that was to be expected as it was not in the change log).

Thank you DEV team!

Hey guys, thanks for the new build.

One change i was hoping for but disappointed with was the ability to horizontally expand the main window in the bento skin. I'm happy you implemented it, but i kinda wanted it so that the scrolling song title could be elongated. This doesn't happen tho, instead only the equaliser bit expands (and incorporates the beat vis)....is there any way of expanding it so that the eqauliser width stays the same but the song title bit gets bigger.

Personally i don't like the bigger buttons in the bento skin. Is there any way of including the older skin build in?

Otherwise great work guys....loving all the other improvements!!

just a first opinion after installing WA:
bento buttons are too big.
the buttons in previous beta were a litle bit small, but these ones in my opinion are huge..

I guess that copying the old skin over the new one will change it. Removing the new first would make sure of that.

I found a small issue with the new installer. Some components act like they are new when you run it. The installed had several items in bold and checked some stuff I know I didn't want. All pmp_* plugins except pmp_usb, enc_wma, ml_remote. I wish I had have noted them all down. I restore my old Winamp folder and make a note of them if you wish.

One other slight thing, the installer checks downloading Winamp Remote (is that some sort of standalone program) even if you don't install the plugin.

Winamp Bento is a skin, like the Moden Skin

@synthetiq
Autotagging does require an internet connection (Though crashign without it is bad)

@Kn0tte
The show/hide reflection for vis/timer settings were there in the previous build.
It's just that the Bento player window is bigger now, so maybe it's more noticable than it was before...

I couldn't reproduce any lag issues with the Bento classic songticker. Sorry.

I also couldn't reproduce the ML window issue in Winamp Modern skin either.

@wdekler
Yeah, that'll be a Gracenote database issue.
As far as I know, it just analyzes the song and tags it with the first matched result. This can sometimes be tricky if the same song appears on a few different albums/compilations. Maybe there should be some way to give you a choice? Not sure how that would/could be implemented though...

@Perseid
Urghh. That's really bad. I always uncheck everything on that screen (remote, toolbar, emusic), so wouldn't be able to reproduce it anyway, heh. However, the Winamp Remote people (orb.com) will certainly need notifying about this problem. As to whether they can reproduce/diagnose it though....

Re: Analyzer
Try it with a different color theme, eg. Winamp Classic theme.
You'll definitely see the difference between normal, fire & line modes there.

@plazzTT
Hmm. Weird. I'm not sure why "Send To > Auto Tag" isn't working for you on any tracks whatsoever. Alas, we can't reproduce the problem. I have noticed though that it might take a while (maybe up to 20 or 30 seconds sometimes) before the UI appears on first usage within a Winamp session. This is as it's waiting for the Gracenote libraries to load. After that, the UI should appear almost instantly on further attempts within the same Winamp session.

Alas, I can't help you with the iPod Classic problem. Anyone else?

@Firestorm08
Hmm. Sorry, but I can't reproduce that here.

@niktheguru
Hmm... are you definitely using Bento #105 ?
The songticker / scrolling title does elongate when you stretch out the player!

@kafkef
Can you provide us with more info (see first post on how to submit a useful bug report). Crash logs would be a helpful start....
[edit] ok, you also posted a screenshot...

@MrX_1980
a) is a known issue (it was like that in 5.35 and previous, and is serverside code related)

b) Hmm, strange. Yeah, Bento isn't too friendly when it comes to trying to view ML and videos at the same time. But the highlighted tab issue most certainly needs looking into.

c) Hmm, even weirder. I'll try to reproduce later (I personally havent attempted to view any videos in Online Services for quite a while now, ever since... well, you know what!)

@Omega X
Hmm. Please explain (screenshot link maybe?). Bento windowshade looks ok here.

@J_Darnley
Please see Known Installer Issues in first post.

@synthetiq
You're not the only one to report the same thing about the Toolbar.
All 6 people who I know that installed it have all said that it doesn't appear/work.

And yeah, as Sawg said, autotag needs an internet connection, but certainly shouldn't be crashing when one isn't available. Thanks.

bento is a modern skin so that seems like a pointless request really

@jph6t: that's good to hear the font issue is gone, just need some more confirmations from the others who were experiencing the issue as well (just to make sure it's not a fluke that it works ok for you, koopa and my hacked up xp install )

You cant shrink the bento skin to take the form of regular winamp, or even separate the video player from the rest of everything else. Are there any plans to separate them? Or maybe someone can make a modern skin look like bento...

bento is a single user interface skin (SUI) so why would they make the video detachable?? it would just go against the whole idea of single interface

[BUG] every other click in Online Services collapses the tree

Bug: Every other click on an entry in Online Services collapses the parent tree of the child.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open Winamp, go to Media Library -> Online Services
2. AOL Radio with XM -> Expand "*XM Satellite Radio*"
3. Click on any station. The Now Playing information is displayed, "*XM Satellite Radio*" branch remains open.
4. Click on another station. The Now Playing information is displayed, "*XM Satellite Radio*" branch has now collapsed.

I tried it with Bento and Modern. No 3rd party plugins, I didn't install any of the crap like Winamp Remote, Toolbar, or eMusic trial.

Previous behavior (as expected) was the branch would remain open regardless of how many times you switch stations in the same category. It seems to be a new bug with this build.

ps - I just like to say I HATE the "Now Playing" window automatically opening when I tune a station. This is a new "feature" (read: annoyance) as of the last couple of betas. If there isn't an official option to disable this permanently I hope someone writes another plugin to "fix" this annoyance.

SRS WOW Thing crashes the latest beta upon the closing of Winamp (clean install, plus the WOW Thing.) I know it's third party, therefore not supported, but it's worked up until now so I thought I'd report it. The error thrown is:

---------------------------
winamp.exe - Application Error
---------------------------
The instruction at "0x032c1074" referenced memory at "0x003a1f60". The memory could not be "read".
---------------------------

It works fine while listening to music, just crashes upon closing.
I've attached a copy of report.zip (the crash reporter crashes while coming up with it, so I zipped it myself.)

Bento Skin issue

In the bento Skin,
if you click the colapse window button in the lower right hand corner to colapse it, when you click that button again to expand it, the window comes back with different deminsions (shorter) than it was initially.

Bug: Song information for a newly tuned XM channel doesn't display

When I tune a station in the "*XM Satellite Radio*" category it displays the URL in the ticker until the track changes (uvox://blahblahblah). The information displayed in the File Info frame (between the main frame and playlist) is updated instantly, just not the ticker.

I can only seem to reproduce the bug using the Bento skin. Behavior is as expected with Classic or Modern.

That's weird. A stop error 000000F4 is usually hardware-related...
- Did you recently install a new hardware device (like a webcam, a TV tuner, etc.)?
- If not, have you updated device drivers on your PC?

In any event, and if you still have your logs folder (%AllUsersProfile%\Application Data\OrbNetworks\Logs), can you compress it and email it to WRsupport@orb.com so we can take a look at it?

Make sure you write WR- as the first 2 words of your subject line in this email.
