Notes:

-Alas, Winamp 5.5 is no longer compatible with Win9x (Win 98/ME),
-and all support for those OS'es has now been discontinued.
-Win2k/XP/2003/Vista are all supported.

-Re: Album Art support
-Lookup order: embedded (in tags), %album%.jpg/gif/png, *.nfo file, cover.*, folder.*
-Note: The cache is the art*.* files in the "Plugins\ml" folder
-(art.dat, art.idx, art60.dat/idx, art90.dat/idx, art120.dat/idx).
-Downloader access via: Art icon rt-click menu, unified file info & pmp edit info box
-Currently saves as %album%.jpg in the containing folder.
-Art retrieval criteria and saving isn't configurable... yet!
-ie. you can't get it to look in a specific dir or save as anything other than %album%.jpg
-nor can you get it to save as embedded art in the file tags.

-mp3surround is playback only for now (no encoding).
-You can find tracks at www.all4mp3.com/music/

-Playlist Generator (rt. click ml/pledit items > Play tracks similar to):
-Notes:
-1) Manual config via: Prefs > Plugins > Media Library > ml_plg.dll > config
-2) Initial Scan may take some time. The more files in your mldb, the longer...
-3) Obeys the Play/Enqueue as default action in ML Prefs
-4) Database stored in Winamp\Plugins\Gracenote (along with all other GN/CDDB files).
-If getting "error initializing" messages, you'll need to delete cddbplm.pdb/idx/gcf files.

-AVS is still the default Vis plugin.
-To switch to the new Milkdrop2 plugin, go to Prefs (Ctrl+K) and select it.
-Remember to configure to taste first, eg, framerates & fullscreen mode.

-Re: Ratings column in Media Library
-If the column is made thin enough, numbers are shown again instead of Star Ratings.
-More tweaks available by using Ctrl+Shift+R dialog in ML tracks pane (note that this is an incomplete dialog and clicking apply will not re-open the dialog until you restart winamp)

-The Download Manager in Bento browser Media Monitor has no config yet.
-Currently auto saves to "My Documents\My Music" and adds to the mldb.

-Re: Skinned ml scrollbars
-For support, Wasabi version needs to be specified as 1.3 in skin.xml, eg.
-<WasabiXML version="1.3">
-Also note that v1.3 skins no longer use the internal freetype font renderer.

Re: Installer:

1) On upgrades, some components (parent branches and child items) might appear in bold text, even though they were installed previously. This is because either the item name has changed and is not listed in your current install.ini file, or you selected a different language in the installer.

2) Be sure to pay attention to the 'Get the Most out of Winamp' page.

3) Re: Winamp Remote
The 'Remote Media' item under 'Choose Components' is just ml_orb.dll
The 'Winamp Remote' item (14.1mb download) on the 'Get the Most out of Winamp' screen is the full Orb package. This is the same as what was downloaded before, when you went to: ML > Online Services > Winamp Remote and signed up/downloaded the software. Note: this item will be checkmarked even if you unchecked 'Remote Media' on the components page (will hopefully be addressed for the next release).

Known Bugs/Issues:

-New CDDB features may be a bit buggy (eg. genre saves with "General" at front)

-Delete Art doesn't work in Alt+3 for embedded art (until next release).
Note: you can remove embedded art by deleting the ID3v2 tag....

-ml_autotag might return wrong results for some tracks if songs are not in the online Gracenote fingerprint database. Alas, there's not much that we can do about this....

-Switching between language packs or from/to English (US) can lead to some of the online related media library tree items (effectively ml_orb and ml_online) losing their position and dropping to the bottom of the tree.

-Column sorting order is broken for pmp_usb devices (info) *

-No 'Burn' button when system IMAPI service is disabled (info) *

-Some Language Packs might not be accurate translations... *

-MPG videos might display the wrong length in pledit/ml (eg. 1:19 shows as 9:39) *

-Stereo indicator, bitrate & freq don't display in main player area and/or Audio is always the active ml view on Winamp restarts with French & Spanish Language Packs (info) *

-Collapse/Expand Playlist in Bento skin doesn't respect 'Show Album Art' setting *

-ASX Parser converts all stream links in .asx playlists to upper case *

-Winamp/in_mp3 crashes on some mp3's (when playing/adding to playlist, or scanning Watch Folders, or using Auto-Tagger or Playlist Generator, etc) (info-1 | info-2 | fix) *

-Shift+Enter hotkey for ML Playlist tree item Plays/Replaces instead of Enqueues (when "Plays selected items" ML setting is active) *

-Gracenote/MusicID features not using Winamp's proxy setting *

-Installer (Winamp Setup section) might reset position of desktop icons *

Updates & Extras:

in_mp3 patch for Winamp 5.5 | Mirror
This update fixes/addresses the following issues:
-Crashing/lockups on some mp3's with corrupt id3v2 tags (info)
-ID3v2 tag not showing when ID3v1 tag reading is disabled in config
-Reading of metadata where more than one ID3v2 tag exists
-Deleting Lyrics3 tag in Alt+3 Editor also deletes ID3v1 tag
-Handling of ID3v2 with bad version/revision #'s
-MPEG Info not showing in Alt+3 for files with large ID3v2 tags
-Support for reading ALBUM ARTIST field if TPE2 not present
-Other misc. issues, mainly embedded album art related...
-Plus: Better optimization for older Pentium Pro/2/3 cpu's.

Note, if the Format Converter (Transcoder) no longer works after applying the above patch,
then you can use the slightly older first update patch instead [download],
which only includes some fixes for crashes with corrupt id3v2 tags,
but has none of the other fixes from the newer patch above.

Winamp 5.5 Beta Preview 3 (Build 1600) to 5.5 Final (Build 1640) Changelog

-New: [vis_milk2] Milkdrop2 Visualizer

-New: Option to not show the playlist number in the Windows taskbar

-New: %family% ATF string for identifying filetypes (eg. %family% on MP3 returns "MPEG Layer 3 Audio File")

-New: $split() ATF function, used mainly for splitting disc & track strings. Examples: [$num(%track%,2)$IfStrNotEqual($split(%track%,/,1),,/$num($split(%track%,/,1),2))]
If %track% is 5/9, $split(%track%,/,0) returns "5", $split(%track%,/,1) returns "9".
If %track% is 5, $split(%track%,/,0) returns "5", $split(%track%,/,1) returns nothing.

? * | are replaced by _ (underscore)
/ \ : are replaced by - (hyphen)
" is replaced by '
< is replaced by (
> is replaced by )
Examples:
Album Name: Greatest Hits: Why? = cover filename: Greatest Hits- Why_.jpg
Album Name: Vol. 1: "\Bleh/" <|Blah|> = cover filename: Vol. 1- '-Bleh-' (_Blah_).jpg*

-Re: Using .nfo files for album art lookup
If there's an .nfo file in the same folder as the album files with the exact name as an image file (jpg, jpeg, gif, bmp) then Winamp will see said image, eg. "Pink Floyd - Animals - cover.nfo" & "Pink Floyd - Animals - cover.jpg" (see release notes above for lookup criteria order).

More details regarding this and how you can make your own language packs will follow shortly (i've got to sleep at some point ). The main thing is that 5.5 provides us with a chance to set language packs on a level from the start and yes this does mean that all existing ones have been deprecated (i'm sure someone will have a go at me about this) but with the mass of changes to winamp.lng this would have been needed anyway to ensure users get all of the fixes.

We know that there are some quirks (alignments in language packs aren't 100% at times) and issues (mainly down to the design of the modern skins though there is an image remapping system in place which makes it a lot easier than distributing the whole skin again) but overall the WLZ System (v1.0) and support for localisation throughout the player is all there as you will see from the bundled language packs

And for those of you who've been wondering what i've been doing for the last few months, well is it along with all of the misc tweaks/fixes documented in this and the last few winamp releases.

If you have issues with Winamp or still want to get it, ensure
you get v5.666 build 3516 and the required plug-in updates

A big thankyou from me, for all your hard work over these last few months

This is an awesome release... Milkdrop2 is as amazing as the new Bento skin... and yes, finally we (officially) have Album Art support in winamp, something i've been craving for at least 3 years

Hey
congrats! Mighty stuff!
Where do you want the bugs in the language files posted?
The german has a few glitches (Media library and browser is not translated correctly, seems to be some scandinavian language..).
All the best

Just a quick and simple question:

Do I need to uninstall 5.35 before installing 5.5? In other words, will there be problems if I try to install the new version over my old one?

And congrats for the achievement

"Clean install, fixed internally"
.. Yeah sure!

I did a clean install and I get the same problems since the ugly beta3 (build 1600).. I hate it... Beta2 (build 1568) worked fine..
The ML problem happens with all modern skins... And the songticker problem happens now too (and in 5.5 final it even happens WHEN pressing the first song in the playlist too.. but when I click another song than #1, the song text shows again)..

After thinking for a while, I got an idea. Do you remember in an earlier beta that there were a problem that people in certain countries got (for example Sweden)?
I THINK MY PROBLEMS IS SOMETHING SIMILAR... IT HAPPENS IN CERTAIN COUNTRIES... I am from Norway, and I think the problem might be country related...
Soulstace, where are you from?

DEVs, FIX IT! Look at the changelog between beta2 (build 1568) and beta3 (build 1600), and see what you fixed. SOMETHING THERE causes my problem..
I want some answers and some fixes

EDIT: Why did you take away the Modern Skin picture on the homepage, and replaced it with Bento? Why not have both?

EDIT2: http://www.winamp.com/player
On that page, there is no option to choose the lite version, but only Full, Bundle and Pro.. The Lite should also be there... To get lite, we have to click on a link..

When going from maximized mode with the Bento Skin to docked toolbar mode and back to maximized again there is a problem.

You have to re-maximize again because the Bento skin is not going back to maximized.

Not for Bento atm.
I wanted to do this, but time ran out since I needed to create big bento and then reimplement/update small bento.

Good reason to wait for the next update then^^
Or is there a quick fix to implement it, e.g. an edit in one of the xml scripts?

Why this new version does not showing me in main window "Surround" (if I'll launch mp3 surround file)? Instead of that nothing is highlighted...

Small question: how can i configure Winamp to have shared settings for all users? There's no such option in the installer and by default it has seperate settings for every user. I found it out when i tried to get my bookmarks and ML-data back after a clean install.

@QOAL: it's the older 2.81d compile that's gone back in since i just ran out of time to find the exact cause of issues with the 2.82 compile. from the time that i was able to check things out, it looks like one of the vc6 service packs/updated sdk is the cause of the compile issue on the main dev machines we have (with a clean vc6 install on my laptop i can get a working build of 2.81d & 2.82). the issue with the 2.82 compile is that the star fighter preset which i use as a check still fails to work properly (but it looks like the main bulk of the localisation changes are not the cause and it's just shown up an issue elsewhere).

i've got to get this resolved for whatever comes after 5.5 just to ensure our langpacks tally up with things

@Sjakko: you'll need to edit/remove the paths.ini file in the root of the winamp folder to force it back to shared settings

you get v5.666 build 3516 and the required plug-in updates

Thank you very much. I think it's a good idea to put this option back into the installer (or at least keep the settings folder the same for a clean and a not-clean installation). That way you can keep people from thinking they lost all their Winamp data after putting back a backup in the C:\Program Files\Winamp folder after a clean installation.

So for those people who tried a clean installation and don't understand why Winamp doesn't detect settings, bookmarks, Media Library data and more after putting back a backup in C:\program files\Winamp; after a clean installation Winamp now puts settings in this folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\[user]\Application Data\Winamp

This is the only suggestion i have. Winamp is just perfect now with the new Bento skin. Respect to the people who made the best music player in the world.

This had been argued about internally but was overriden (since it hinders having multiple installs without manually editting files but then again the new installer isn't messing up my existing installs now so it's a bit of give and take). The logic follows of using exising settings if there's a previous install (based on paths.ini i believe) or it forces to multi-user settings (logical now that we only support OSes where profiles are the normal and in general most people had been asking for this) on new installs (well that's how it should be working from what i understand).

@Hanschke + AlecTronic: The translations were done via the AOL localisation teams. There were always going to be issues with the new language packs due to the short time we had to get them fully done (isn't easy on something when there's around 40k words and a bit over a month to sort out) plus we knew that people were always going to disagree with the phrasing of things.

For issues, please see this post for where to report issues (rather than posting here). and we'd prefer to get the official versions fixed up (though all of the details for the lang packs will be following - i've just got to finish sorting that out as doing the coding was more important at the time). and i know from an asthetics view, most of the lang packs need to be cleaned up to match with the alignments in the english defaults - things will be rectified for the next release hopefully though we'll be sorting out some other issues as well.

At least things are localisable now which is better than the situation pre-5.5 so just bear with us and help by providing details on issues to the translation mailing list so we can make a better language pack (with a thanks in advance i hope )

What about my issues/bugs? Any reply?
It must be some country-based bugs... When I get it and you dont..
I even did a clean install on my laptop today and installed 5.5 Final... Yep, I got the bugs there too...
I have got these bugs since beta3 (build 1600)... Some of the fixes in that build did this to me.. I want these bugs to be gone... Fixed!

Oh, yeah...

the only changes to the song ticker in beta3 were to resolves issues with ratings were not showing correctly on change/when first loaded (related to the loading order of gen_ff and gen_ml) before playback started and an issue where the notifier was being incorrectly fired on startup - infact these changes mean there's more chance of the title being updated rather than a non-update. as such (since i've barely followed the forums for the last week and a bit) it looks like the title thing is isolated to yourself (unless i've missed it from anyone else).

with the ml issue, i remember sometalk about that and the weirdness of how to repro it (i think it may have been) but i really don't remember seeing anything being done on the code level to even look into it (messing with gen_ff only a few days from final release is never a good idea as it'll cause more issues from past experience).

as for rectification of these issues (as it's nigh on impossible to fix something you can't repro yourself), i don't know who'll look into them since i've no way to test with a non-english xp system (plus i've done far too much on other things outside of my work remit and i need to sort out the rest of my things now). though one thing is that continuously posting about it makes it more confusing to keep track of things (as was indicated in the beta threads, even if there was no response things were at least read and attempted to be repro'd if possible)

I can confirm this. When it got to the configuration stage (setting file types, etc), once it finished there was a long delay with an odd progress bar and while at it the desktop icons position was reset.

Yep.. That seems to me that something is wrong in that songticker code... As you said, you changed something about it in beta3, and I got the problems... Then we know that there is something wrong...

"it looks like the title thing is isolated to yourself (unless i've missed it from anyone else)."
No, I am not the only one who are getting these problems (And I have tried it on two PCs - one with english windows, and one with norwegian, since I am from Norway).... A guy named "Soulstace" are also getting these problems..

So this means that it will never get fixed, or looked into at all? Bad, really bad.... So you think that it is not a "country-based problem"?

An idea (since 5.5 is released, you can try something before 5.51..):
What about copying the file(s) you think the problem is in (for both of the problems).. Then you try to change something in the code, and then you SEND the file to me (over the forums or PM).. If I no longer get the problems, then it is fixed and you know what the problem was... (Or you can send me some files from the old beta2 (1568) and we can figure out what file who are causing the problems)..
Try it out... I dont want these problems..

Keep up the good work... Winamp 5.5 is rocking besides these problems..

EDIT:
I can also confirm the "resetting desktop icons" problem.. It happened to me too... The icons were MOVED around on the desktop (no longer in the order I had them before)

This is a great update. Really liking Bento.

When I add media to the library, Winamp won't try and find album art for it will it? I don't really want Album Art in my media, don't ask me why. It won't be automatically added to my files or folders will it?

Oh, and is there a way to delete album art from the files that currently have it?

EDIT: Nevermind, I found a way to delete it. A mass delete option would be nice though.

Happy Birthday Winamp!!!

And also to confirm, all of the bugs I noticed in previous betas have been fixed, strangely including the smooth scroll issue! In addition, Winshade clipping issue is solved too! Turned out to be (almost) perfect before the final release!
