Winamp 5.541 is not able to associate with some file types on Vista

Hello guys, I hope someone can help me with this strange winamp problem.

before i go into details, i am using windows vista home premium with service pack 1 and all updates from windows update.
everything is up to date.

i tried to install and configure winamp v5.5.4.1 but theres a strange behaviour...

i installed winamp with a administrator account...

ok, here is the error description.

in the last step of the setup you have the chance to pick the file types u wanna assign with winamp application.

i checked
audio
playlists
and winamp specific files

and now the strange things are here...
when i try to open a *.m3u playlist file, windows tells me that no application for this file type is assigned...

therefore i looked into the panel for the default application settings... (sorry i dont know the real english description because i have german language only on vista)

when i assign winamp as default application with all registered file types the error is still present...

iam not able to play m3u files by double click...

when i watch the default applications panel and i choose to select the file types manually, i can see that some filetypes are not assigned correctly...

asx
b45
m3u
m3u8
pls
wal
wiz
wpl
wsz

and the protocols
mmst
mmsu

on this listed file types theres just
"unknown application" as as standard application...

i can do what i want but i am not able to assign these files with winamp.
but in winamp all file types i ve listed below are checkd into the winamp - options - file types
but the listed file types are not assigned with winamp...

can someone tell me what i can do?

generally i have the chance to assign the file types by hand but thats what i dont want to do...

please help me, its so damn frustrating ...

See if this helps..
http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=297650

Try my regfix from this post in that thread:
http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....45#post2421545

Note that you'll probably need to edit the .reg file in Notepad first before running it,
to make sure that the path to winamp.exe is correct.

It should work, though please also note that we still intend to look further into this matter and hopefully fix it for a forthcoming release.

hey DJ Egg,

thanks for your fast help...
after i edited the reg file it works now, but the icon is still the winamp default icon and not the changed icon (i chose the 6th icon) but its not visible...

can you tell me what kind of information do you need to localize the problem?

Yeah, the .reg file sets the icon to the default one.

You'd need to change this line first...

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Winamp.PlayList\DefaultIcon]
@="D:\\Programs\\Winamp\\winamp.exe,1"

to, eg.

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Winamp.PlayList\DefaultIcon]
@="C:\\Program Files\\Winamp\\winamp.exe,6"

Or just open regedit and manually edit that string
(start -> run -> regedit)

Left pane: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Winamp.PlayList\DefaultIcon
Right pane: Default (right-click -> Modify)
C:\Program Files\Winamp\winamp.exe,6

As for why it's happening, we still don't know yet...
I'm not sure what other info anyone else can provide.

we [dev team] are not too sure what is causing it since there's no error codes being returned even though internal actions aren't being created.

we've got at least one machine (mine) that experiences the issue though the weirdest thing is how most of the registry handling works ok, is just in the case of the winamp specific/playlist items that it goes wonky *shrugs*

Is there a reason why this still hasn't been fixed? It's still omnipresent and this issue can be reproed 100% on a clean install of Windows 7.

By the way, the problem originates from the fact that the contents of the shell sub-keys are not created for :

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Winamp.LangZip
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Winamp.PlayList
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Winamp.SkinZip
