no matter what mp3 i play winamp will skip. i have a pentium three and a very nice sound card so i am not certain what the problem is. when i play any mp3 the music comes out with occasional blips and repetions. it sounds much like a cd sounds when it has a scratch in it, however the blips or repetitions are never in the same place. please give detailed instructions on problem and how to fix it.
thank you

there are lots of thing to do; please do one by one and try whether it is enough, not all together (would just be a waste of processor):
  1. increase the output buffer; to do that, go to
options->preferences->plugins->output and doubleclick on waveOut plugin. increase the buffer length (you need to click play in winamp even if it is already playing to make changes take effect).
  2. increase the winamp priority class. goto options->preferences->options and increase it.
  3. increase the decoder priority. goto options->preferences->plugins->input and doubleclick on nullsoft mpeg audio decoder and increase its priority class.
  4. increase the waveout plugin priority class (doubleclick on waveout and drag the slider)
  5. try using the directsound plugin

I had had a very similar problem. Winamp was very sensitive, and would hiccup when doing anything -- most especially when clicking an URL in IE5. When left alone, it would falter about every 20 seconds.

After killing off all the background apps, tweaking the winamp settings this way and that, and finally uninstalling and reinstalling winamp, all to no avail, what fixed the problem was reinstalling my sound card drivers.

It may just have been a quirk of my soundcard (S3 SonicVibes PCI), but just like Hooked On Phonics, it worked for me.

I dont have much of a system (Pentium 2, 350 mhz, 128 mb ram)....

Anyway, WINAMP should never skip etc on fast machines...

When I play an mp3 and try to load Adobe Photoshop, which takes 30 seconds to load, Winamp still plays smoothly... No skips at all....

You guys have Pentium 3's etc and super sound cards which I only can dream about, and you face skipping problems ?

Do yous have at least 128 mb ram ??

I have 512 megs of ram and an athlon 800 mhz and winamp "hiccups" whenever I click on anything or an event beep occurs. It's annoying as hell and my soundcard is a diamond mx400 card. This shouldn't be happening, what can I do to fix this?

Winamp skips

Just as the_hollow_man mentioned, reinstalling the audio drivers for your sound card works to clear this problem.

I thought it was odd since I had a cleanly installed XP OS (my audio drivers were not supplied with XP) and none of my other apps had any problems, just WinAmp.

Reinstalling fixed the problem.

Thanks Hollow Man

re-installing drivers did not help me

Re-installing sound card drivers did not help me.

Does anyone have any other solution to this?

I have already tried the suggestions above, but they did not help.

Thanks.

Try the DirectSound output tweaks.

No luck?
Are you using the latest version? (5.094)
Did you install any 3rd-party plugins? (if so, which ones?)
Please provide system specs (including a HijackThis log).

Also, in the future, please don't revive old threads. This thread's almost 5 years old, and completely outdated.

Here you go...

Tried DirectSound output tweaks... didn't help
I performed a clean installation of winamp 5.094... didn't help

I am not using any third party plugin.

!! Another thing to note is that the skipping occurs with other audio players too (like Windows Media Player and Apple Quicktime), with all mp3 files.

Here are the system specs:

motherboard: gigabyte ga-7n400 pro2
cpu: amd 2800+
ram: 768
soundcard (onboard): realtek ac97
vid card: radeon 9600 pro
os: windows xp pro sp2
directx: 9.0c

Mmh, so it's more of a system issue than a Winamp issue? (which means I'm not sure I'll be able to help you...)

Are you sure it's not the files that are at fault? I.e. did the same files play properly in the past?
When did you start experiencing this issue?

Maybe try disabling the Microsoft Debug Managar. If I recall correctly that process can sometimes cause issues with Winamp.

Apart from that, I'm not too sure about these entries in your HijackThis log:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AWLGTSTA.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\AWLGTSTA.exe /START

C:\WINDOWS\system32\AWLGTSTA.exe

Anyone?
