The message box is as follows:

NullSoft WaveOut Plugin v2.02 (x86)
The specified format is not supported or cannot be translated. Use the Capabilities function to determine the supported formats.

This is a new install, it would not play my mp3's, or even the sample Demo.mp3

CD's will play in windows media player and cd player. So the sound card does work, I can also play midi's, wav's, etc without any problem.

The problem appears to only be with Winamp.

So I take it that WindowsMedia Player plays your MP3's okay ?
yes/no ?

Does your Winamp play WAV's, MID's, CD's. etc ?
yes/no ?

There's a few things you can try, but let's start with these.

Firstly, open the Winamp Prefs [Hi-lite main Winamp Window -> Ctrl + P]

1. File Types tab :
Scroll down the list and make sure that MP3 is listed.
If not, then you've got a corrupt download.
Delete the original installer, download it again and re-run the setup.

2. You can confirm the above by going to:
Input Plug-ins tab :
Make sure that "Nullsoft MPEG Audio Decoder" is in the list.

3. If steps 1 + 2 are succesful [ie. MP3 & MPEG Audio Decoder are listed], then there should be no need to re-download.

4. Output Plug-ins tab :
Hi-lite Nullsoft Wave Out and click configure.
[Please note that this is the default Output plug-in and will already be hi-lited]
In the "Output Device" tab, it'll probably be set to "Wave Mapper".
Use the drop down menu and change it to whatever best suits the description of your soundcard.
[eg. I have a Soundblaster AWE32, so I chose SB-16 Wave Out]

5. Close the prefs and try playing your MP3's again.

6. Still no joy ?
Go back to the Prefs, and change the Output Plug-in to Direct Sound [simply by hi-liting it].

7. Repeat step 5.

8. Still no joy ?
Report back here with your answers & results to the above and we'll take it from there.

Other options are to:
i) Check your soundcard is properly connected & configured.
ii) [re]install the latest drivers for your soundcard
iii) Update DirectX to v7 [N/A for WinNT, latest M$ service pack required] ?

Actually, for me, it was set on my soundcard (a while ago I'd set it to "OPL3-SA Playback"), and setting it back to "Wave Mapper" solved the problem. (Selecting the DirectSound output plug-in also worked, but that thing is too damn CPU intensive.)

Also, for me it was only a problem with one particular SHOUTcast stream (this one). Everything else has worked fine, including Winamp's demo.mp3. Anyone have any idea why that would be?

Hmm . . . weird . . . the Trancemission FM broadcast streamed fine for me.
No problems whatsoever . . . using WaveOut with Soundcard as Output Device.

Hmm . . . maybe it's because it's 24-bit and not 16-bit

btw, is that what they call "trance" these days then ?!?!
