I had the same problem with skipping but in the directsound output plugin setting if you change the main buffer length to 4 seconds or higher, polling delay 15ms and block size to 64k and you shouldnt have any problems with skipping anymore

does your PC have a network card?

If so try turning off the DHCP service (If You Can)

why don't you just get the new version of winamp?
2.8 just came out and it kicks ass! it's way better for sound card support and works with win xp. get it at www.winamp.com/download
and if that doesn't solve your problem, buy a new computer. ha ha

All versions of Winamp to my knowledge work with XP.

With SB cards it is more often than not the sound driver rather than winamp that is at fault.

HAHAHAHAHAHA!

I'm just wondering how the hell wave106 even got to this thread to reply to it. What'd you type into the forum search engine, wave?

"Winamp"?

Neargh.

actually, I had winamp 2.7x on my PC when I put XP on it, and it refused to work. Gave me some sort of direct sound error. So I got Winamp3, and I've been using it ever since(5+ months). I'd download 2.80a, but I like the ability to play movies via winamp, and i don't want to give it up.
