Yup, it's true. AOL shut down the project immediately but enough info was uh leaked for other people to create gnutella clients.

heh?

AOL shut it down? The bastards! but I guess that could be a good thing cause others wise Nullsoft might have gotten in some major shit with all the evil record companies. Now that there are so manny versions it will be almost imposible to stop Justin and **** creation!

NULLSOFT ROCKS!!!! YAY!!!!

winamp made them seem amazing to me, but now that I know they started gnutella too, they have been promoted to gods.

why u think aol shut the project down? they could have profited. and was nullsoft owned by aol way back in march when justin and tom started gnutella?

AOL sucks. actualy my mom wanted to order it tonight. I threatend to disown myself from the family

all i need is my trusty netzero (no banner of course)

Peace

AOL most likely afraid of legal issues, and even worse, they were in negotiations regarding the merger with Time Warner (a record label which was suing Napster). It would have been a huge mess if they let the project go on.

heh?

Keep in mind that they shut it down right when Napster began its first trial; there were (and still are) dark clouds forming over napster and anything seen napster related, PLUS not to mention screwing with the Time warner Merger.

it was shut down within a few hours. i remember i was one of the lucky ones that got the original from nullsoft.

AOL shut it down, fearing they would get intangle in the napster issues that were beginning at the time.

Wait, why didn't they just continue it under their own free time (i.e., not in Nullsoft)?

[wow, Nullsoft isn't in the AOL Dictionary, ]

DON'T EVER USE THE NULLSOFT ONE ! You can read why on every site about Gnutella. That version was very much ALPHA (read : veeery BUGGY). The bugs affect whole Gnutella network if eveyone starts using it again ... This really is true !
And... The program by Tom & Justin had a very sucky interface, Barshare has the best ...

I really *love* Justin and Tom for creating Gnutella, but their program is out of date now ...

Thor is correct 0.56 is buggy. Use a newer client suchas:

- Limewire - Java Based, works for linux Mac win32 etc.
- Bearshare - One Of The Best Windows Clients
- Gnotella - The Other best Windows Client

For all your file sharing Info go to

Oh god. I tried the original app way back when, it it turned me completely off the gnutella network. A few months ago, I decided to give it another whirl, and I fell in love with Bearshare.
