I know there are a lot of lyric sites out there, but I found at least one flaw with every one of them. None of them had everything I thought a lyric site should have--user interaction. People adding lyrics, people commenting on lyrics, people talking about lyrics. So with my newfound PHP and MySQL knowledge, I decided to give writing a lyric solution a shot.

Over the past few months I've been programming a site backend with PHP that talks to a MySQL database, and I think it's pretty close to the ultimate lyric site. It's got everything:
  • User addition of lyrics in real time.
  • Commenting of lyrics in real time.
  • Lyric rating.
  • Discussion forums to discuss non-lyric issues.
  • User profiles.
  • ... and more being added all the time.
So, I ask you to help me beta test the site before it goes live on its own domain and server.

The URL where you can find the beta version is:
http://www.urban-digital.net/songmeanings/

Check out the beta information page (link at the top) to find out how you can submit bug reports, view recently fixed bugs, and suggest new features.

Thanks guys!

I dunno if it's PHP or mail.com, but it takes an awful long time to recieve that there confirmation email. On top of that, you need a way to display more than 7 artists at a time (or am I just not looking har enough?). Which reminds me; I can't find a link to the listing of artists on the main page. I had to check out an artist spotlight, and from there, go to all the other artists.

The Confirmation E-Mail: Server is having problems with Sendmail, so it's disabled for now, but it still says its sending. I'll change that.

Artist List: At the bottom there is a link that says 'list all artists' which brings up a list of 20 artists at a time (20 per page * 7 pages). The division of pages cuts down on server load, but I suppose I could add a list of all artists at one time. You can also click a letter to display all the artists that begin with that letter.

Thanks for testing, Radioactive Man!

You know what you should do is for each artist have the artist name then the cd's that they have produced, then in the cd's have the songs. These could all be viewed at once just like the way the songs are now by the artist but they would be more organized and easier for people to find songs.

I've actually thought about that, but... I would have to work out a few problems if I wanted to do it... it wouldn't take much but it would require a little more work in adding lyrics, which might mean less lyrics overall, I dunno.

But, I'm seriously considering that

Wow.. damn nice, Kevin The site looks *very* promising. It's exactly what I'd look for in a lyrics site. I've been looking for a good one ever since lyrics.ch got shut down and went crappy.

heh?

Actually, I have the form to do that, but... its generally restricted to administrators. But I'll consider it.

Your idea has been added to the progress list... hehe

http://www.urban-digital.net/songmea...e/progress.php

Down the road I think it would be cool if there was a plugin to interface SongMeanings with Winamp. For example, play a song, it searches the database and displays the lyrics in the minibrowser. Now that would be cool!

thats be real cool.. but you could already do that with the minibrowser.. i forgot how exactly.. but in one of the files you can set the default page in the minibrowser and use variables in the url (like artist and song title).

sorry i can't just edit my posts... but you could have the minibrowser refresh on song change by making the file winamp.lks say somthing like......

code:

Winamp Links File v1.0
DefBrowseLoc http://www.ice.kewlio.net/sex/?artist=$a&title=$t $a on Ebay.com and Amazon.com
BrowseLoc http://www.rollingstone.com/sections....asp?artist=$a $a on RollingStone.com
EndFile

the url after DefBrowseLoc is the one that would auto refresh. $a is artist and $t is title.

I'm still working on the page, it might be an hour or so before I get it to work. Gotta write some PHP to search for the title, artist, etc.

...and your artists have been added. I can't beleive I overlooked Smashing Pumpkins!

idiot checks might not be bad for justin

oops. 112 has some lyrics that dont belong there...

A Hard Day's Night should be Beatles
Dont Leave should be Faithless
If Lovin You Is Wrong should be Faithless

now all these songs added will be on the final version, right?

Yup...

Those lyrics got added to 112 because it was the default right? How about if you add a certain artist then when the confirmation page comes up, that same artist is selected?

i think it'd be better if the default was "Choose an Artist" .. then javascript would pop up a window that warns you to select an artist if you press submit.

that plug in doesnt work for me... the mini browser heads over to amazon shit... but when i look in the .lks file, all the coding to go to the amazon thing is gone and your coding for your lyrics site is there... argh! i'll try to fix it myself for now.

oh and quick sugestion... after you log in to your site, instead of it just saying 'you are now logged in' make it go to the home page or a special members page or something. Either way, the site is great.

p.s.
i'm just gonna go down a list of artists for you to add I noticed you have left out. And if you want to make the site much better you will allow users to add artists. Just make it so when someone adds one, you check out what they added before it is put up so you can check artist spelling or whatever... anyway... heres the list of missing artists I've seen.

3LW (Three Little Women)
Big Punisher
Blackstreet
Bon Jovi
Cars, The
Debelah Morgan
Dream
Garbage
Gin Blossoms
Green Day
Hanson
Ice Cube
Innosense
Jefferson Airplane
John Lennon

Kris Kross
Leanne Rimes
Lil' Kim
Ludacris
LL Cool J
M2M
Mandy Moore
Marilyn Manson
Method Man
Methods Of Mayhem
Mos Def
Mya
Mystikal
Nas
Natalie Imbruglia
Nine Days
Nine Inch Nails
NWA
Pharoah Monch
Pras
Prince

S Club 7
Samantha Mumba
Sir Mix-a-lot
Snake River Conspiracy
Snoop Dogg
Third Eye Blind
This Mortal Coil
Tom Green
Toni Braxton
Ugly Kid Joe
Vitamin C
Wheatus
Youngbloodz

damn that took a while...

p.p.s. You spelled Paula Cole wrong... you spelled it Paula Cola

i love the site, man... keep up the good work... and keep us winamp forum peeps informed on your work, looks like allot of people are intrested

peace

ok... i fixed the lyrics in mb problem.... when you install the plugin, it replaces the original winamp.lks and creats a backup. the new one is plain bare except for one link which is supposed to auto get lyics on play, but since this alone doesnt work for me I copied that one line and pasted it over the one it is supposed to replace. and it works fine... here is what I currently have. (i added the links to the games in)

I've found that if it doesn't work right away, if you click the Up arrow on the Minibrowser, select the SongMeanings entry (should be the last one) it'll work from then on.

Thanks for all your help again, I'm gonna add those artists ASAP!

WOW Snyder! Thanks for that list... I wish I had a thing where you could directly add them, I'm not sure if that'd be a good idea just yet though. But, wow, thanks again... I'll put a mention of ya on the progress log!

[edit] 205 artists! [/edit]

Not only is it kosher, it's encouraged! Add 403274234 lyrics if ya want.

We'll be getting a new domain very soon and then the final version of the site will come quickly after.

All lyrics, users, etc. will be transferred as well.

Added
Dido - Hunter
Dido - Don't Think of Me
Dido - My Lover's Gone
Dido - All You Want
Dido - Honestly Ok
Dido - Slide
Dido - Isobel
Dido - I'm No Angel
Dido - My Life
Dido - Take My Hand (bonus track)

only the first three have appeared so far... anyway, that just about covers the entire debut album.

Suggestions
-Support for linking images of the artist directly embedded in the lyrics (size limited, of course)
-Editing lyrics
-I'm a wee bit daft, but better navigation
-Taking you directly to the newly posted song after submitting it, rather to a new submission form
-Stuff other people have said

Lemme just get this out in the open: KICK ASS!

Very impressive... but where's the Tool section? Seriously, what is the purpose in restricting the addition of Artists only to administrators? It's going to mean you get rushed off your feet by millions of emails to the effect of, "can you add a section for such-and-such an artist?"

Other than that slight whinge, it's looking very good indeed...

"What kind of a two-bit operation are they running out of this treehouse, Cooper?"

OK: I'm currently working on:
- letting users add lyrics
- letting users edit their submissions (and delete)

Radioactive Man: For some reason 3/4 of Dido's songs went to Undefined Artist, I fixed it, but I'm looking into the problem.
