If I could track down and older install version, like one of the 99 beta ones, would it still have the ads, or was it just the current icq versions that had it?

I've got this program to remove ads. Not tried it though. There's some info here that works.

I don't like the ads. I'll probably get the latest version though. Rather that than AIM or MSN messenger.

It's the same sort of thing. But the link I put has pictures. You know what some people are like. They need all the help they can get.

I prefer AIM anyway, uses much less resources and it's super easy to get rid of the ads. (If one were so inclined.)

I'd sacrifice a thousand rams if someone would make me a simple IM'er using the ICQ protocol that ACTUALLY ALLOWED SAVING OF THE CONTACT LIST! Gawd! They shove a million features in your face that just suck more and more RAM down the tubes, and they won't even fucking support contact list saving! What a fucking rip! Recently, I haven't been able to run ICQ for longer than 1/2 hr before my system runs out of resources and crashes. FUCK!

My rant for the day.

That link in the other thread to remove useless features doesn't work. Got a list of the files to delete or something?

AIM saves contact lists (since 4.1 or 4.2?) and you can use them on AIM Express. Mmm. And it's a simple, no-frills messenger. And ads are killed like that (if you wanted to anyway). Me likey.

[random thought]
Could AOL possibly be bloating ICQ so much to possibly gain more AIM users? Hmm... something to chew on. Speaking of which, I need food...

RM actually asked for an IM'er using the ICQ protocol. So I figured I'd add that AIM does have some experimental support for the ICQ protocol -- just enter your ICQ number as your screen name, enter your password, and connect. The only problem is that your buddy list will consist of a bunch of numbers that you won't make any sense of

heh?

How to remove ads? Read Diz ;)

Go to http://www.chickshardware.com/html/a...cqadrem/1.html

There you can find a very detailed description how to remove any ads and banners in ICQ and to keep them away . The instructions are slightly complicated, just read it thoroughly and it should work

Peace.

I still use ICQ 98a - the last version before it got so bloated I couldn't stand it anymore. 98a takes about 1 second to load on my computer, while 99 whatever took at least 10. If it isn't Photoshop, it shouldn't take that long is my caveat with software. Do I really need a utility to send text messages to cell phones? No thanks.

btw, if anyone wants 98a I still have the installer and I can post it somewhere (since it's SMALL).

silly..... well......

getting rid of these ads is a challenge, thus fun for me...

searching for the right hack, file, info, etc was SO ez in this instance. the forum that the icq website linked to had all the info the the removal of hacks, because icq wants to find out how these people are doing this, and respond by giving out a newer ver that fixes the hacks, thus allowing them to make $ but alas I found the right file for the deed, and the correct way of getting the ads out.

http://members.fortunecity.com/zxypher/icqhacks.html

it's a simple and crapy site made by me in less than 5 minutes. but it worx and gives you the hack.

also on that page is the other kinds of IM's. e.g. Trillian is a great IM that hosts IRC, ICQ, AOL, and MSN. it's a great proggy without ads and takes up 3.46mb of ram, /sarcasm great for me (i have 128 hehe). so check it out, and have a blast at the fact that you've stopped icq from desplaying ads
