I'm interested in starting a shoutcast station from my school. While I have the support of the probable coordinator for this project, I don't from the systems administration company that hosts my school's computers.
Before presenting this idea to them, I would like to know about any copyright issues that I may encounter. Chances are students will be bringing in and broadcasting from their own cds, so this material will be paid for, not downloaded off of napster. Please respond with any copyright information that may hinder, or help permit me to start a shoutcast station from my school. Thanks...

well i know for a fact that in Canada, you cannot show a movie in your classroom that has been bought from a store for personal use. Maybe this carries over to cd's and personal usage? then again think about other radio stations... i dunno

It's tottally Illeagal to play music from any copyrighted cds (any CD you can buy in a store) without the owners/publishers permission.

Here is some more stuff that may be of interest: http://www.shoutclub.com/articles/view.php3?num=14

As you might get from that article all of this is pretty new and no one is sure what we need and don't need. As of now I have not heard of anyone getting in trouble for broadcasting but things may change.

They get a licence from the copyright holders. Perfectly legal business practice.

The fact that I might have to buy radio station issued CDs quite frankly scares me, it'd take about $10,000 to get a good selection of songs... no way are we going to have students just talking for six hours a day, something is bound to happen... (trying to sound like an administrator would) Weather or not someone has gotten in trouble because of broadcasting copywrited music is neither here nor there... it's weather or not there is a probability of it happing that matters to me... thanks for your help, it is greatly appreciated.

Yes the probability is high and you do not want to risk your school's rep on it.

How about playing stuff from your music dept, or scratching up the $500+ a year to play commercial music.

It is really quite cheap in comparison to a real station.
