random fast forwards!!

Hi,
I know this topic was brought up a few months ago, but it never seemed to get resolved...
While listening to songs in winamp, every so often the track will fast forward for a while with no sound for seemingly no reason, then continue playing again!
I have an IBM Aptiva, with a soundMAX digital intergrated sound card, with the latest drivers i could find (from IBM).

Now, just a question, can this be fixed in the next release of winamp, or is there noting that can be done by Nullsoft? (ie: the problem is with the design of the soundcard, and no future update can fix it).

And one more thing I have noticed and would like to know if other soundMAX owners have too. While playing games, does sound get cut out every so often?? Sometimes the sound comes back itself and sometimes I have to press alt+tab twice to get sound back.
I thought these two problems could be related...

Thanks,
Nate

PS: before u say anything, yes i have tried old AND new drivers of all my hardware. Also, i have tried fiddling with the output controls, and i have no plugins or dsp's, etc, on.

One more thing: the 2274-40A from a certain "business machines" company that is also international , is one of the worst designed computers that has graced the earth.

Pardone my use of words, but it sounds like it is a problem with the integrated soundcard. I would recommend disabling it and getting a SoundBlaster. There are many different models on the market but I'm satisfied enough with the SBPro16 on my older machine (the one I'm on right now has a SBPro128).

lol thought so...
I know soundcards are cheap, just wanted to know if I absolutely had to fork out a few bucks. :|
Isnt it funny, the only reason i bought a premade computer is so i could get customer service... Its just too bad the parts are low quality and theres nothing they can do to help.

Integrated Soundchips provide very poor support for playback of any compressed audio (MP3, WMA, OGG, etc) due to their lack of internal processing memory. To compensate, Windows has to create more virtual memory, hence the skipping.

I recommend any of:
Guillemot latest cards (Hercules GameTheatre XP / Fortissimo 2 / Muse XL);
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz (USA only)(aka: "Videologic Sonic Fury" in Europe);
Terratec DMX Xfire 1024 (more info)

2nd choices (slightly older): SB Live or 128 PCI; Diamond Multimedia MX400.

I don't recommend any of:
Crystal Audio; Aureal; Avance Logic; Ensoniq; RealTek; OPL3; ESS
In my professional opinion = all very crappy.

ps. Peter recommends the Yamaha SW60-XG

DJEgg,

How could you recommend SB LIVE?!?!

Don't you remember the amount of problems the SB Live created with Winamp? gen_nomad.dll and ctmp3.acm.

Btw, has Creative updated with any new news about those problems? If not, I think you should hassle them, if not, the same problems will repeat with the new SB Audigy.

Just wanna add some new info, Ensoniq has been acquired by Creative.
The new Turtle Beach Santa Cruz uses the same chip as the Hercules GTXP so it's quite good.
Don't buy the Diamond MX400, Diamond has closed down and there's no support for it anymore.
Another good alternative is the Philips Acoustic Edge.
And lastly Nvidia is releasing their NForce APU (Audio Processing Unit) which seriously kicks major butt in audio processing power.

SBLive's ain't too bad. There's nothing much wrong with the SBLive . . . apart from crappy Win2k/XP drivers

gen_nomad.dll & ctmp3.acm come packaged with the installation of PlayCenter2.
If you don't install Creative's crappy player, you'll never ever witness the evils of gen_nomad.dll or ctmp3.acm, and both the SBLive and Winamp will work perfectly ok.

Why anyone who uses Winamp would want to install PlayCenter2 in the first place beats me. Okay, maybe you've got a Nomad MD and you want to be able to d/l MP3's directly to the MiniDisk . . . maybe gen_nomad.dll works then . . . lord knows !?!?

Of course I haven't forgotten about the perils of gen_nomad.dll
How could I?
It was me who initially discovered the problems with it, and me who spent two weeks conversing with half the CreativeLabs tech support & development teams.
Yes, I'm going to follow it up again very very soon, just to find out if anything's being done. I'm still convinced it's a deliberate act of sabotage to try force people to use PlayCenter2 instead of Winamp. Only the Nullsoft team can take some kind of legal action, but I don't even think they've done anything whatsoever about it yet

Hey, I didn't know about Diamond MX300/400 being discontinued.
That's sad, 'cos they were damn mighty fine cards.

The new Guillemot card has only just been released.
Apparently it's meant to be quite special & innovative . . .
from what I've read about it anyway.
I don't think it's the Game Theatre XP one (though, that's a top card too), maybe one of: Fortissimo 11 or Muse XL ??????

Not heard much about Philips cards.
If it's anything like their hi-fi products . . . errmmmm

The newer Turtle Beach cards have improved, but the older ones were shite.

The NForce APU sounds like a good option. NVidia good, ja!

btw, how do ya rate the M-Audio Delta 1010 ? $999 brand new
http://www.midiman.net/products/m-audio/delt1010.php

Then again, I've only got a SBAWE64 in one pc and a SBAWE32 in the other, so who the f#%@ am I to speak anyway, LOL

Cheers -> Egg.

DJEgg,

http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=apu

And download the PDF. It's quite an interesting read.

Btw, the SB Live does suck.

http://www.pcavtech.com/soundcards/compare/index.htm

The SB 64 PCI and SB 128 PCI are rated higher than the more expensive SB LIVE!

And if you notice, the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz is rated very highly.

Woosh! Cheers for the link. I want one!

So, SB Audigy is the latest CreativeLabs offering, eh?
I wonder how that fares? I dread to think, gulp!

I see there's plenty missing from the list @ pcavtech.

Yes, the SB128PCI was a pretty fine card . . . back in its day. A mate of mine had one before he part-ex'ed it for an SBLive! Sucker!

So, seems you're right about SBLive then, though I'm not sure how up-to-date that list is? Makes ya wonder just why it's so popular, eh?!?!

Hey, I've never even heard of some of those at the top of the list.
Aardvark Direct Pro . . . hmm . . . ponderous!

Yup, there's certainly plenty to choose from. Plenty of competition.
