Play Realaudio through winamp without Realplayer !!!
Winamp Realaudio plugins require Realplayer to be installed, I know that, there has been a lot of discussion about this here. Well, I think Realplayer is a bloated software which puts way too much entries in the registry and I hate those types of softwares.
I found a way to keep the minimal components required in order to hear Realaudio content in winamp. (tested innover's and Tara's plugins, on Winamp 2.76, Win98SE, Realplayer 7 &8). Tara's plugin even allows playback of realvideo. Here is what you must do : 1- Install Realplayer (I suggest a registry backup before, if you want to avoid the hundreds of registry entries it puts in your registry when only 3 are needed )2- Backup those 3 folders : c:\program files\common files\real\common c:\program files\common files\real\plugins and c:\program files\common files\real\codecs * almost forgot, also backup the pncrt.dll file located in c:\windows\system * 3. Uninstall Realplayer and restore your registry if you did a backup as suggested in #1 4. Copy the 3 folders you backed up to their original locations, and pncrt.dll file to c:\windows\system 5. Paste the text below in notepad and save as a .reg file REGEDIT4 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Software\RealNetworks\Preferences\DT_Plugins] @="C:\\Program Files\\Common files\\Real\\Plugins\\" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Software\RealNetworks\Preferences\DT_Codecs] @="C:\\Program Files\\Common files\\Real\\Codecs\\" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Software\RealNetworks\Preferences\DT_Common] @="C:\\Program Files\\Common files\\Real\\Common\\" 6. Click on the .reg file you just saved. 7. Enjoy, of course you must have one of the winamp realplayer plugins. |

Of course, they don't exist!
If you are installing rp on a german windows system, the names are different.
You must have noticed that! Instead of "program files" it is "programme" and "common files" is "gemeinsame dateien". There the evil rp should be. |

real player 8 uninstallation
Coch,
that is very helpful, I've been looking to rid myself of real player but still play the files! Just one question, I have realplayer 8, and I found the following: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\RCAPlugins should that be backed up too since ...\Plugins is to be backed up? Mullet Mike |

I followed the recommendations above but plays video but not audio. I've got Windows XP and WinAmp 2.80. Any update on real audio via WinAmp for a new RealPlayer or WinXP?

Great it works!...but question about Tara....
I have found it necessary to first configure the Tara plugin by unchecking the 'Process audio through Winamp.' Then the sound plays fine for .RAM files. Ummm... is Tara able to stream files or do I have to save the file on disk everytime just to play it? Or maybe something's wrong with my setup....
I'm using 2.81 with the RealOne dll's by the way. |

If the link is to a streaming playlist then Winamp will stream it
If the link is to a file then Winamp will download it first Example of streaming playlist formats: .pls, .m3u, .asx, .ram, .smil, .rpm Example of standard file formats: .mp3, .wav, .mid, .mod, .ogg, .ra, .rm, etc. The only way to get Winamp to stream standard file formats is to paste the url in the Open / Add Location box __________________________________________________________________ btw, for the benefit of other people who come across this thread and can't find the links to the aforementioned plugins, here they are: __________________________________________________________________ Tara's Audio Video Plugin (v1.0.3b) Lets you play real audio, real video, real jukebox, mpegs, avi and other formats: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/...for_Winamp.htm http://www.musiclivesonline.com/software/watara.html Innover's RealAudio plugin (requires RealPlayer (G2 or higher) Engine to be installed), by innover: http://innoreal.kiwidream.com/ If site is down, try this mirror Hellsoft Realized plugin (requires RealPlayer (G2 or higher) to be installed): http://blkdemon.cjb.net/ The connection to this site seems to be rather intermittent, so if it doesn't work at first just keep trying every once in a while, or try this mirror We do NOT recommend installing the evil RealOne Player. Get an older version from www.oldversion.com instead Preferably v7 Basic, or v8 at the very worst G2 (v6) is the safest, but doesn't support the newer codecs/formats. __________________________________________________________________ [update] More potential alternative solutions here: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/index.p...l=real+player& Be sure to read the entire thread because most of the active links are on page 2. If the Real Alternative Codecs work, then there's no need to download RealPlayer at all. Yay! Also see here: http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail...fid=1054136293 |

Thanks for your help, DJEgg. I found out it was my browser's fault for it not working the first time.
In Crazy Browser, when clicking a .ram URL, Winamp is unable to stream (it doesn't even attempt to open it). It doesn't work when I paste the URL, either. When I had RealOne installed, and even though I gave file associations to Winamp and took them away from RealOne, it opened .ram files with RealOne. However, Internet Explorer recognizes Winamp when I click a .ram URL. So, I'll stick with IE when I'm streaming. So all is fine ![]() Thanks again to coch! Before coming here, I tried emailing this guy at BinNews.com for his "unrealone" package that is supposed to do the same thing, and he rudely told me to "grow up" for calling Real "evil" and defended it rather arrogantly saying he has friends who worked for the company and that "they were far from evil" as if my statement was meant to be personal, LOL. I see where he is coming from and I now am less hostile towards Real (but still do not like the software). Anyway, he didn't have his 8 mb package upped anywhere and couldn't help. He actually keeps Real installed and uses "unrealone" with Media Player classic. Either he likes to support his buddies or had no idea about this simple trick that works quite nicely with a nicer media player. I told him about this thread so he may see how easy it would have been just to do this in the first place. That kinda made me laugh. No offense, if you are reading this ![]() Peace everyone

I love real files, but the player is annoying... rams are smaller then mp3s. My computer is... worse then basic!!! 32 bm of ram and 1.8 gigs of hard drive space... I HATE that I can't have a huge mp3 collection. There are over 200 CDs (not including singles), 100 tapes, and about 650 records at my house, and my two stereos broke in the same week! This whole situation is frustrating... I've done this like three different ways, and I have two plug-ins now, and the files still won't work for me. My computer might be weak, but it can handle most winamp plug-ins, and it's had every version of real player besides 3...

What is your Windows OS ?
For Win9x/ME Paste the following text into Notepad and save it as real.reg (ignore "code:", just copy+paste everything between the two lines) code: For Win2k/XP Paste the following text into Notepad and save it as real.reg code: The filename is irrelevant, only the .reg at the end is important. It could be called bullshit.reg if you want. It also doesn't matter where you save it, because all .reg files are automatically merged with the Windows Registry when run (double clicked). |

It doesn't matter where the file is or where it's saved. All that matters is that you run it after you've saved it. It'll ask you if you want to import data into the registry, click yes and you're done! The REGEDIT4 bit needs to go in the actual file before the other stuff.

Thanks to you both for the advice.
Am I right in thinking that once I have clicked on the file and the information has been transferred to the registry, that real.reg could then be deleted? Thanks again. A |

Yes, the .reg file can then be deleted.
Once it's been merged into the registry, it has no more use. Though it might be wise to zip it up and back it up somewhere just incase you ever need it again, eg. if you reformat etc. |

Good thing I have absolutely no reason to use that POS program, period. I wouldn't even do this if I had to, let alone actually installing the program.

Realplayer Codec Installer
If anybody finds this useful:
Ok, Im not sure if this is breaking any sort of licesnce, but I have created an installer; (Winamp Realplayer Compatability) that does all the hard work (of making winamp play real audio files) for you: -Installs all of the Real Player Codecs into the right place -Regesters all of the keys I might make it so it installs the tara plugin with it (so it really is all inclusive), but i would have to ask permission from the author I guess. Also I need help hosting the setup file (3.82mb) as all of my hosts dont seem to work with CuteFTP tonight If you could help me with hosting the file, please MSN Messge me at staticfish1@hotmail.comCheers ![]() Dan |

This may be a little off topic, but... I thought it'd be worth it.
Has anybody tried Real Alternative? Click HERE for more info. I say give it a chance, it plays .ra, .rpm, .rm, .ram, and I bunch of other supported formats without having to install Real/Real ONE Player. GO CANUCKS GO |

Hi everyone,
I glad to see people are finding this trick useful. I've been away from these forums for quite some time, and I was surprised today when I saw recent activity on this old thread. Thanks for the installer Staticifsh, much easier this way indeed. And about RealAlternative, that sounds like a good choice for Win2K/XP users (it is based on Media Player Classic, which is also great). Doesn't work on Win9x/Me though. BTW, there is also a QuickTime Alternative from the same authors. |

Just a notice, in Windows XP Professional, the pncrt.dll file is in C:\Windows\system32, not system.

DKDIB- What does you attached file do?
Staticifsh- Were you able to find a host? It would be nice to try the plug-ins. |

4 Onix:
"ROP Filters.nsi" is an NSIS script to build a Real codec pack (like Real Alternative). "Backup RealOne Player" is an application that backup Real dlls into current folder (compile .nsi file & click on the exe). |

I still have the installer, and yes it works very well with most things, but as i am on 56k I have no real way of getting it to the outside world, as I do not really want to set up a webhost just for this..
So, if you have AIM, ICQ, MSN, JABBER, or even if you want me to send it to you through IRC I will. Its 3.85MB in total AIM: staticjunkie MSN: staticfish1@hotmail.com ICQ: 101402052 JABBER: staticjunkie IRC: ????? Regards Dan |

This really works!!!
This is a great trick! I am so glad to be rid of that infectious disease of a program that goes by the name of RealPlayer 10.
This method takes abit of effort, but it is definitely worth the time. The one suggestion I would make is to install the lastest version of "Real Alternative" instead of installing any true version of RealPlayer. You can nab the proper files and folders from the Real Alternative installation, just be sure you move them to the proper location indicated in the .reg file you create from the original post in this thread. Stick the .dll file back in whichever file it comes out of... in most cases it will be windows\system32 (I would assume). Using this method will save you and your computer from the headaches that RealPlayer causes. I wish I had have figured this out before I installed that festering dogpile onto my computer!
