What is a forum?
Webster calls a forum "a place for the discussion of matters of public interest or of interest to a specific group". Over time I have come to realize that is not what these forums are for the most part. In large part these forums seem to be a place for young people to come and spew out all thier anger and aggression, usually in a non-constructive manner. I have also grown tired of searching through pages of "two words and a smiley" posts to read something of substance. I am tired of the constant bickering and rudeness. And I am tired of those who post without putting some sort of thought into what they are saying.
Am I saying I am more intelligent than you? No. Am I saying I am better than you in any way? No. Am I saying I am too old to be here? Yes. I will be getting on with my life now. I have enjoyed my time here for the most part. I will miss the people closer to my age like Chev, watadoo, Missy, DJEgg, etc. I will also miss the people who offered something of value to this community like Radioactive Man, ethan_h, Jarsonic, Twilightseer, Ice, Sarge, and others. I wish you the best! Goodbye and long live Winamp!!! |

i'm sorry this forum hasn't lived up to your expectations randman, their are a lot of youngsters here, but i don't see that as a negative at all- a majority of the folks here are here because its fun, its a nice relaxing place to hang out with people who have common interests; i think that each member brings his or her own attributes to the forum, and help in making this one of the most active places on the net- as for the rudeness and bickering, that will pass, there are a lot of new members here, but when the ones that don't really contribute to the forums get weeded out, the lasting members (those who do like it here, and are willing to put thought into their statements) will continue to lighten and enlighten this place.
i hope that you find your avenue of expression and leisure and i hope that you will still visit once in a while, i wish you the best randman... take care of yourself and remember if you ever need to talk, vent, hang out, or just lurk, we'll all be here for you. your fellow winamp cohort, bop

Dear Mr. Randman,
This is indeed, a very sad day for me. I will miss your intelligence, whit, and humor. I will miss your additions to this forum. I agree there are many different topics, but that is what makes a group interesting. Please keep in touch, my friend. Know that I will always remember you. ~ Missy |

We'll sure miss ya!
This is another sad day for the forums...
It's really sad to hear that you'll leave us randman. I respect your choise though. I can imagine that you feel that you don't belong here. But I think that we do need people here like you! You're respected here by a lot of members. And most of all, by the people you've named. We need a guy like you for the mature conversations. I like your (sometimes humoristic) remarks and opinions on most of the topics. And I bet that I'm not the only one.I wish you good luck with the real live, enjoy it! And I hope that you'll drop by agian, someday... Greetings, Eelko "Kaboon" Berkenpies |

randman,
this isn't going to ba a "please don't leave" post - you are old enough and competent enough to make your own decisions. However, I will say this - you will be sorely missed mby many of the members here. You have brought your reasoning to the forums, mature, intellectual and humourous posts which have yet to be equalled. Sure, the majority of the members here are young, and their posts and threads will reflect this. But one thing I don't agree with is you saying that you are too old to be here. There is no cut-off point at which a member can no loger post, or doesn't fit in. You say that you will "miss the people who offered something of value to this community", without pausing to realise that you fall under this category too. Take time off, sure, everybody needs it, but you have a lot of friends here who would prefer you to stay around. Either way, take care, regards, Mike Like my photography? Buy some here.... |

I hope you read this Randman. I've always thought you were an interesting and fun personality on the board, even though I don't think we every exchanged any messages in a thread or privately. I'm 23, and I often feel that 20-25 is a lousy age range around here. I'm too old to act like this: "I'm u83r-1337! Ph3Ar M3 o1d d00ds!" And I'm too young to say "All you young whippersnappers do is flame and complain." I don't know what life will be like in 20 years, but right now I enjoy the forum for what it's worth -- like-minded people that enjoy using Nullsoft products. Sometimes there's humor, sometimes argument, and occasionally something really cool comes along.
My suggestion is to take a nice healthy break and then consider coming back in (please feel totally free to ignore me and my suggestions ). Personally, I try to avoid looking at the forums over weekend's, so I get a small break every week. It's very easy to be absorbed by them and getting back to the "real" world is something everyone should do. The thing is, in my "real" world, I'm the king tech. No, its not my super-ego speaking here, it's just that in my small town, there REALLY isn't anyone that wants to discuss computer/tech/internet topics AND is capable of doins so on my level. If I want to get some mental stimulation I have to come to a message board, and the Winamp forums are my board of choice.Anyway, best of luck to you, I just wanted to get all that off my chest. It seems like a lot of regulars are jumping ship and everyone is losing out because of that. -=Gonzotek=- But I'm feeling much better now. |

dudes, there are 10 types of threads we find in these forums.
1. bitchin' threads 2. "i'm leaving" threads 3. "i now have X posts" threads 4. threads that have been moved. 5. "Hi! my name is" newbie threads 6. 'questions that have already been answered' threads 7. "link" threads 8. pointless threads 9. flame threads 10. threads that actually mean something to a majority of the boards, one's that people will want to read to gain knowledge about stuff they never really knew about. (they're all links, examples that i found.) |

What is so amazing about Randman's post,
is that it comes at a time when I'm feeling exactly the same way. I know exactly how he feels. Incredible. |

The life of the forums is barely audible on my tricorder!
Fuggit! I can understand Rand's leaving. I have no fun here anymore either, with the adolescence and idiocy that has taken hold here and the loss of the real juice that kept us alive from people such as Jaz, SLK, Watadoo, and many others who learned long ago that DragonballZ, Microsoft complaints, and idioticly enormous sigs were too much for anyone of average intelligence to endure. I salute you, Rand and offer my sincere wishes for your future. Don't forget me and feel free to keep in touch in our journeys ahead ![]() elchevelle@hotmail.com |

I agree. Any more these forums seem to be an outlet for rage, anger, depression, etc. I, for one, think that we're better than that.
I myself have participated in a few arguments and i am sorry for that. You will be sorely missed randman. I'm sure we're all sorry to see you go. But if you must, you must. Best of luck in all that you do. Farewell! |

Coming from you that means a great deal. You have one of the most twisted but incredible senses of humor and wit here. I too enjoy your posts. You have a distinct and unique character here, and that's what is important. I'm not going anywhere. I may not post as much because I'm finding it harder to find threads worth posting in. But it seems these things run in cycles. I will surely miss Randman. He was as close to my age and my background, as anyone here. We had a great deal in common. Too bad he made the choice he did...but I can absolutely respect his choice. He'll be just fine whatever he does and whereever he goes. Keep on truckin' Randman... |

i have already written in this post and wished randman good-bye, and i do sincerely hope that all goes well with him; HOWEVER i do have a major problem with the people who complain about this place and then continue to stay anyways-
people bitch about there not being any decent threads and yet when was the last time those who complain tried to start something that they deemed "important"? i am sorry if this makes me unpopular but i really don't care- i feel that if you are not a part of the solution then you are a part of the problem... and i cannot remember the last time that chev, papadoc, randman or anybody else that wishes for the "old days" started a so-called "worthy" thread. i have tried my hardest recently to start threads which might help people begin to talk about interesting things... sometimes they work sometimes they don't- i can't help that... but my philosophy is if you don't like it here.. why the heck do you continue to lurk about, thinking that the people who participate here are a bunch of morons? chev you are great, you have helped me a lot in the past, but you have mentioned over and over that this place sucks; nowadays you make a little spiteful comment here and there, and then lurk away into the shadows again. if you think this place has turned into shit, then LEAVE, nobody's forcing you to stay... move on to better things i think there are so many people focused on the bad things that they never remember the good things... i visit here regularly, at least once a day and everytime i'm on, i find that somebody has started an interesting topic... whether it be personal, thechnical, social, or whatever, i always enjoy my time here.... anyways, what i'm trying to say is basically this; if you don't like the winamp forums, if your time spent here is not enjoyable LEAVE, by staying and constantly complaining about it, you only contribute to the alleged "bad vibe". i think that it is very hypocritical and that this place can do without that type of negativity. ßoþL¡©¡†¥ |

Since you brought my name up I must respond.
I'm not complaining and I'm certainly not lurking. I absolutely agree that one should be a part of the solution and not a part of the problem. That's how I live my life. Sometimes I have a problem with this place, but do I run away from it? Nope. I stand squarely in the face of the problem and dare it to get the better of me. You may not ever see that, but believe me that's how I handle my problems. Sometimes I just get frustrated, that's all. Occasionally I may show that frustration as I did here. As far as me starting a "worthy thread"... When I first came here I tried that and they never went anywhere. So I decided not to do that anymore. But thanks to your observations Boplicity you've helped me realize that I should try again. You are a gifted individual and I respect your opinion. I will in the future.

I haven't been here long at all and I'm certainly a "youngster", but I'm really sad to see you go. I've always enjoyed your posts, and your departure will detract from the forums. I wish I could convince you to stay, but I can see why you feel the way you do, so I'll just say that I hope you'll find a forum that you enjoy more, and check back once in a while: you might find it's changed for the better.
Enjoy your life, 7icha7d. |

Sorry. I over-reacted to some things going on in the forums and got frustrated. The stupid thing was that it didn't even involve forum regulars. I appreciate your kind remarks and some e-mails and PM's. They are the reason I won't be leaving.
So now I feel embarrassed about acting as juvenile as some of the people I was complaining about. I'm sorry, I was serious about leaving when I started this thread. But my mom wasn't around to send me to my room for a timeout, so I prematurely lost my mind and started this thread.

So glad to see you back, sir. Believe me I was just about to pull the plug too at exactly the same time you did. Also due to frustration. But thanks to Bilbo and Boplicity and a couple of others I didn't. You are needed here more than you know. Welcome back.
