My mp3's are "VBS" files and nothing will recognize them

Some of my mp3's have an icon that look like a top hat and are called "Winamp Media Files" these work fine with winamp and my cd burning software. However, many of my mp3's have a lightning bolt icon and are called "VBS" files, neither winamp or any other program will recognise these files. How do I fix this problem? Is there a way to change vbs files to Winamp media files?

You have a virus, probably one of the ILoveYou variants.
Run an up-to-date virus scanner asap.

The actual MP3's are probably now hidden.
Goto: Windows Folder Options -> View tab.
Checkmark: show hidden files + folders
Uncheck: hide extensions for known filetypes

This will make the original MP3's reappear.
In Explorer, select all files in the folder (Ctrl+A) -> File Menu -> Properties:
Uncheck "hidden" (under: attributes)
You can now safely delete the VBS virus files.
(VBS = Visual Basics Script files)

Make sure every last trace of the virus is eradicated from your system, otherwise the files will just become infected all over again . . . and many more too (exe, doc, jpg, mp3, etc)

In future, be more wary about opening dodgy e-mail attachments!

I was infected with this. It wiped all my JPG's, but luckily not y zipped pr0n. It managed to copy all my MP3's into 12kB VBS, but ti didn't get rid of the originals, thankfully. I have reason to believe some of them may be carriers of the virus because they're flagged as system files.

Upon opening in notepad, the VBS files are simply a note from the author ov the virus saying some crap about bad things going on in Colombia.

In the VBS files, the virus is called "PlanColombia", however my scanner recognizes the virus as "LoveLetter".

Unfortunately, I must tell you, there is no way to restore the MP3's you lost. The only thing to do now is thoroughly exterminate the virus and rebuild your MP3 collection.

Good luck.
