what is direct sound

how is it better, worse or different?

Direct Sound uses DirectX for outputting audio. The reason why you would want to do this is most of the time one of two reasons:
1) You cannot hear multiple sounds at the same time (While Winamp is playing AIM sounds are blocked, and so on)
2) Direct Sound is used for the newer fancy sound cards that feature more then two speakers. waveOut just uses two.

The downside is that by going through DirectX this makes the output process more CPU and memory(?) intensive.

its an application programming interface (api) to allow coders dirct access to the soundcard instead of having to go through windoze.
