Time for millions to find a new email provider

In 30 days, Hotmail will officialy [edit]not[/edit] become a pay service.

Quote:
Did you know? If you don't sign in to MSN Hotmail® for 30 days, your account becomes inactive and:
- You lose all e-mails and attachments in your Inbox and other folders
- All of your incoming e-mail gets rejected
- You lose all contacts in your Address Book
The price: $19.95 per year

So are the other (good) free email providers out there?

p.s. Anyone up for @winamp.com names?

[edit] I'm an idiot

The pay thing is for an 'enhanced' service. The crappy free one is still available.

As I now see, the thing that got me was Microshit's clever use of huge bold red letters at the begining of the email that read...

Don't lose your hotmail account

... and then included information on how to pay for hotmail.

Somehow I think my reaction is exactly what they were going for

Clever bastards

  • SMTP access for email readers such as Outlook or Eudora
  • truly ZERO spam (it's a little known provider, so hasn't landed on the mailing lists yet, and also uses a proxy to screen out mass mailings)
  • The stability and flexibility of Novell software
  • password box access for simplicity and speed. The option to use regular login screen as well, if that's what you are more comfortable with
  • complete web access to calendar, address book, composing/inbox so you can access your email anywhere in the world
  • templating to change the look of the site
  • 100% Free

for $20 a month, you could prolly just host a pop3/smtp server somewhere. run your own even.

then another $8.95 for a domain/yr. there ya go.

I'm quite happy with my hotmail acount, have been using it for years, not as fast as a POP account but works well enough for me have had no reliability problems. The attachment limit has been a pain in the past but nothing major.

Not too much spam [I use another account for signing up to pron mailing lists ]

Price of domain: $12.50
Price of host: $9.75 a month

Getting drakesland.com and being able to brag about it: PRICELESS!!

Seriously if you register a domain and then get the right kind of account you can pay under 10 bucks a month for your own SMTP and POP server like me

Am I right in thinking you can buy a domain name and the host it wherever you like, on any webhosts server? so I could buy Firewireguy.com and then go choose a server, or are they locked together?

if you have a ISP that gives ya a fixed IP you can host on your network, just give them your server's IP when you sign up.

You buy the domain and then you have to hook that domain up to a host that will allow you to with DNS. for example yourname.com might point to dns1.somehost.com

You can't point it to any server you want either since they have to add you to "their" DNS records so if you choose to point to dns1.hostcompany.com and they don't setup your domain in their database it will give you a error of somesort.

OMG!!! YES!!! WOOOOOOOO!!!

@MYREALBOX.COM =

p.s. I never have had a provider which used IMAP, and WOAH does it kick the flying fuck outa POP3.

In Outlook express, all your POP3 email accounts get poured into one single Inbopx, which has always been the ONLY reason I stuck with Hotmail, because in Outlook Express, it gets it's own folder and everything apart from the other cluttered together account. But I just set up Oulook Express for my new myrealbox account and after I pressed Enter, a new section was created just for this account! YAY!

/me does jumping jacks in fast-motion.

GOODBYE HOTMAIL!

I use 3 different pop3 email addresses (one for home stuff, my Yahoo! (as pop) and my college email). Then, after Outlook retrieves the pop3 email, it just goes through a filter and puts all the email on my home email to the home-folder, Yahoo! mail to Yahoo! folder and college mail to the college folder. Never had any problems with it.

I use to download Hotspam...mail with Outlook Express too, but I just got sick of the spam, so stopped.

This post is useless. Oh well.

I think it's funny. Those things always mention that they are non-accredited first. Why not just omit that part?

My record is about 300 spam messages in 2 weeks or so. This was my other hotmail account that no one knew the address to. I'll leave that to die.

My other which i use for MSN messagener recieves a lot less spam. That's the only reason I use Hotmail anyway.

So what are good POP3 (free) email providers..

excepts myrealbox.

Cuz I'm using zworg.com at the moment but the outgoing mail is like ridiculously slow.. sometimes it takes up to 4 hours before a mail is sent. And that's too damn long.
