Winamp 2.79 won't auto-play CDs, MP3s

I just loaded Winamp on my AMD Duron system, running Windows 98, and IE6. I'm having enough problems with it that I'm tempted to pull it off my system before it starts damaging files.

When I put a music CD into the CD-ROM tray, nothing happens. I can't get the CD to play unless I manually run Winamp and make it open the music on the CD by hand.

Also, when I go to a website with links to mp3 files (specifically, Barnes and Nobel's on-line university), Internet Explorer opens up the Windows media player window, which stays blank, and nothing happens. If I go into the media player error window, there's a message that says something about an unterminated string.

I've already removed any occurance of the media player in the Win98 file types associations window, and that has had no effect on the problems. Just now, I was trying to open Eudora while Winamp was playing a music CD. Eudora crashed, and Winamp hiccuped before jumping back to the beginning of the first track of the CD.

What's wrong here?

Try this

1) The CD Problem.

Download TweakUI. Install it. Open it in the Control Panel, click the "Paranoia" tab and make sure that "Autoplay data"/"Autoplay music' cds are checked. Then, in Winamp, Open the Preferences Window>File types> Check Associate with audio Cds. Now, Winamp should autoplay Cds

2) Browser/mp3 problems

In Media player, go to options>Format and uncheck "audio files".
Then, use MP3Fix to configure your Mime types to function properly with Winamp.

Similar problem in WinXP ... after installing 2.79 Windows nolonger recognizes WINAMP as an option for autoplaying audio CDs and when you pop in a CD nothing happens.

No "legitimate" TweakUI available for XP yet ... got any suggestions?

[edit]

Tried reinstalling 2.79 and no luck ... I backed out to 2.78 just to make sure that i hadn't accidentally pulled the plug when I was poking in my registry and everything was fine again.

I guess the wrong line of code got snipped in the new release.

Winamp 2.79 AutoPlay Success & TweakUI for XP

Sweet! This worked to fix my Winamp 2.79 in Windows Millennium! It sounds like there's a lot of frustrating little bugs that popped up in the switch from 2.78 to 2.79 - the new release is the only Winamp version I've ever had troubles with, and I've been happily using since around version 1.60!

On the subject of TweakUI for XP check out:
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/tweakui
Not sure if this has the AutoPlay feature in it.

If you can wait until April for official Microsoft TweakUI for XP:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/h.../powertoys.asp
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/p.../powertoys.asp
Those links won;t have the program until April sometime.
