yeah it's a month old article, but none the less, I thought I would share my excitment with you all and let people know about it's development, which has been going on for over a year, who don't browse gaming sites.

I can't wait for Doom3. I've got big expectations for this game, I've been a Doom fiend since the original three episodes of Doom came out. I really hope they have some "retro" level that has some nostalgic Doom crap...my favorite video game song is still E1M1...or Untracked from SSX, but that doesn't help Doom out, does it?

Notes:
1)I chose not to have a cdrom or dvd-r included so I can buy a dvd-r/rw recorder. The one gateway provides are dvd-ram/r, which suck.

2)I will be replacing Soundblaster Audigy down the line.

3)The monitor I currently have will do fine (19 inch flatscreen/not flat panel) so I chose to have no monitor included.

4)I opted for the GeForce4 Ti-4600G so that I'll be overprepared for DoomIII, Warcraft 3 and any other future game.

5)lastly, I will be purchasing three 36mb 15,000rpm hardrives. 2 for my music production work. And 1 for my video production work I'm beging to get into. I don't do as much video work, so I'll only need one for now. If I ever need more I can always go the external drive method using usb 2. I'll use the 80gb 7,200rpm hardrive that comes with the system for programs and games.

Doom III is gonna be wicked cool. I can't wait for Unreal Tourny 2003 and Unreal 2003 too(if thats the name for Unreal 2). All 3 should kick major ass.

Also SNYder, see if you can't opt for the newer PC1066 RDRAM, Intel doesn't offically support it, but it's much faster apparently. Also, if you are going to get into movie editing and DVD authoring you might want to consider a dual processer system, DV editing eats up on CPU and HD space bad

i wanted to go with a dual processor but it'll bring the price up even more.

and as for PC1066 RDRAM, I'll look into it. But figuring I am used to working with 128mb sdram, (a step up being ddr sdram, another huge step up being rdram), I think even the slower rdram will be wicked fast to me

but I'll look into it and see what the cost differences are currently and how much faster it is. Thanks

well i researched rdram for the last few hours and now have a good knoledge of them. unfortunatly since I'm low on a budget and have settled on Gateway (unless I find cheaper costing premade pc's) and Gateway only ships the 2.26 and above P4's with 850e chips I can't upgrade to pc1066 down the road if I buy now since the 850e doesn't support anything over 3.2gb ram transfer rates, and the pc1066 needs 3.8gb.

oh well. I guess I'll just have to live with ultra fast pc800 rdram instead of ultra ulta fast pc1066 rdram.

also... I looked into Geforce4 and the various company's versions of he card. The main one is obviously Nvidia card. But there is another one that is gaining popularity by e-VGA, a new company (founded 1999). It's version the e-VGA e-GeForce4 is just as good as the Nvidia card in all aspects, but the one aspect which sets them apart, which is actually the e-VGA's selling point, is this new ACS² Cooling Systems built onto the card. Well, I have read a review which messured it's effectivness compared to the standard cooling mechanism on the Nvidia card. And althought this new cooling technology looks and sounds impressive, it fals well short of it's claims. Infact, the e-VGA cards became much hotter then the Nvidia cards. Plus it cost around 50 dollars more. I'll stick with NVidia.

I looked into the Alienware system you are talking about, the Area 51 line. Here's what I was able to come up with. they are using 4 sticks of PC1066 RDRAM on an IntelD850EMV2 board, which uses the new 850E chipset. However the Intel says the board doesn't "offically" support the PC1066 spec for the 4.2GB/sec transfer rates of PC1066. So un offically, it's not supported and thats about as close as you can get to a nudge nudge wink wink from the people at Intel.

450 megahertz PIII
with a crappy ATI 8mb card
that came with my computer
in 1999.

Theirs no way my computer can handle anything cool and I can't afford an expensive graphics card right now

Yes, it looks much, much more impressive in motion.. I never found the screenshots all that impressive, but once you see the lighting and environmental warping, and physics (zombies falling down stairs and such) in motion, it's very fucking impressive.

When I thought it couldn't look any better, id revealed that the E3 demo (from which the video was taken) was running at MEDIUM detail due to a bit of instability at the time when running it full detail. Insane.

Surprisingly, it was running on ATI's next-gen video card which supports 128-bit color. I think Carmack has stated that the GF4 Ti4600 is still the best card to run it on, though, due to ATI's crappy drivers.

Ummm... so, ummm.

Does this mean I can simply buy pc10666 rdram and put it into my new gateway, which uses the same motherboard, and be able to take full advantage of pc1066 rdram?

Best guess, if other people are doing it, then I don't see any reason why you shouldn't be able to. Run some benchmarks first, and see how you like the speed, then if you want more go for the PC1066 RDRAM, thsts what I would do

awsome! one last question, though. have you heard of anyone running 1 stick of pc800 and another stick of pc1066 at the same time?

But mabey that'd just defeat the whole purpose of speed.

the original doom and doom 2 were all about much monsters and much killing. this one looks like it's more scary than anything else. i'm having mental flashes of half-life and the first level of unreal... not that either were bad, in fact both were VERY good, it's just that that's not what i want for doom. doom should be like serious sam without the humor.

I'm not a RDRAM expert, but i'll see if I can find more information on this. My guess is if you paired a PC800 with a PC1066 the 1066 would clock it self down to PC800. But, it might not. The PC800 may just run at 1066 just like a lot of older SDRAM that runs at 66MHz will run at 100MHz and even 133MHz.(I've got a PC66 32MB DIMM from Samsung that is running at 133MHz). I would spend the money and get all PC1066 though for the best performace. Just my two cents

Sad thing is your K6-2 450's 3D performance, eg floating point unit, is beaten by PII350's:/

RTCW had a decent story line, a bit unbeleivable at times, but still it was decent and it was more than than the typical deathmatch era of Quake3 and Unreal Tourny.
