What is Nullsoft Streaming Video (NSV)?

WA3 has been installing a "Nullsoft Streaming Video (NSV)" plugin for some time now, but I can't find any mention of this format anywhere. What is it?

Stop jarsonicing jarsonic!

Actually, it is magic. And its new, and you'll not find an awful lot of info about it now, but I'd imagine people will start hearing about it soon, but I dunno when, what or how.

well, i forget the news sources, but AOL has already anounced that it has a new elite streaming video technology that is exclusive to them, and they are dropping real player. i bet that this is what AOL was talking about.

i've heard about it too. it had somthing to do with routers that could stream more efficiently. i think they were also testing it out on shoutcast streams for a while.

I'd like to meet a mad man who makes it all seem sane

AOL for the networking equipment... Time-Warner for the media (like TV shows).... and Nullsoft for the best media software in the world.

who agrees that this is going to be a good thing here?

A search for nsv Nullsoft yields an unrelated link to zlib, this, which appears to be a Justin Frankel site, and an old, old NSDN beta news report. And some other amusingingly odd, but unrelated links.

well
basically nsv is a new container-format, just like avi
but i think justin added some new features to improve its streaming-quality... not just over shoutcast.. so dudes, do all you DVD-rips in nsv/divx instead of avi/divx, thx ;=)

Yup

*.nsv file will also be able to specify how they were encoded I think. Kind of meta-data about video files, but I don't understand yet the real benefit above the meta-data currently used in AVI standard.

NSV is a new video format. It is designed to be easily streamed, support any audio and video codec, and be usable on nearly any platform. Currently NSV utilizes MP3 for audio and VP3 for video.
A number of years ago, I had 3 ABBA video cd's, and I took the dat files out and sold them.

With the proper plugins I could play those dat files on Winamp 2, although sometimes it was a bit buggy.

With the advent of WA3 I converted them to mpg files, they played good in WA3, no plug-ins required. (and NOT upside down. )

Over the weekend I have converted them to Nullsoft Streaming Video, or nsv files, and I know why that will be the format of choice for streaming. The files are ONE THIRD the size of the mpg or dat files, without a loss in quality. I am very pleased with the results.

How would you like 3 video CD's on one disk?

Use the NSV Encoding Tools which are on the above mentioned site! (http://www.nullsoft.com/nsv/)

nsv talk

NSV is just a baby. Will AOL(c) do the right thing and pimp it? The Video side of things is vp3 from On2. Jump over and check out On2's vp5 codac way better then vp3 by a long shot.

As far as i can tell, there is nothing to stop you encoding an nsv file using vp5 for the video, and ogg for the sound. (You'll have to make the encoding and decoding plugins yourself, but soon other people might do that)

Check out the low end of tthings on vp5

vp5 kicks vp3's ASS in the low speed end of things. I said BS to vp5 for a long time till I got stuck on a slow speed link from hell and WOW it kicks ASS for "the little people" on 99% of aol video can now be sent to them all from in house devs. (cept for video side of things). Will it be paid for or will it be napster all over again with video? Will Aol(c) pimp winamp video to all of aol users? I bet winamp will blend nice now in any next gen aol "control" software. Easy to change for the "new" look...to the all new.....

Inedible Bulk, chill out. If you think a post violates one of our forum rules, feel free to use the 'report this post' link. But the rest of IANAUN's posting history seems like honest tech support inquiries. We usually encourage people to search for and use old threads rather than starting new ones on the same subject. Perhaps he just hit the submit button at the wrong moment? An honest mistake doesn't get you banned, nor would the odd single post bump ...90% of our regular members would be guilty of that. Again, if you do think that something requires the attention of the moderators, either report the post or contact a mod via PM.

I was away for a while.
