Winamp doesn't play livestream or does it only when it wants to... (?)
Hi,
a few days ago I posted a problem I've been encountering since about 2 weeks (no obvious reasons why the problem suddenly showed up) (you'll find the original thread text copied hereunder...) Tom (moderator) gave me the following link to an existing (but older thread) http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=37053 This link talks about editing MIME etc... Until recently winamp always worked smoothly on my computer... Since a few days, however, I am experiencing troubles while trying to listen to any shoutcast radiostation... Instead of streaming the sound through the winamp player, my computer tells me it is downloading the file... Any idea what the problem could be (moreover, sometimes it works ok, sometimes it doesn't... (fyi Listening to MP3s on my harddisk does perfectly work... ) Thx for your help & kind rgs |

oops sent this out too early.. (wrong button)
what I was basically saying is that the link didn't offer me much help : the problems remain the same : sometimes (most of the time actually) Winamp simply refuses to play the stream and instead my IExplorer tells me it is 'downloading' the file (as if I downloaded let's say any type of file on the Internet). I do not know whether the problem is limited to .pls formats (I assume that most Shoutcastlisted broadcasters are pls...).. If e.g. I log on to www.epitonic.com (offering some good music) I encounter identical problems... Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. And if I doubleclick fast , where it initially doesn't work it suddenly starts playing the stream (after having doubleclicked 1, 3, 10 , or 15 times ... ) but... once again, not allways... I am using Winamp 2.80, Win 98 SE , IE 6.0 ... Can somebody please help me out ? 5 free beers on my account whenever I am around where U live

Well yes I did so I'm getting pretty desperate !
I noticed while editing the Registry that both the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Winamp.Playlist\shell\enqueue and HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Winamp.Playlist\shell\Play] directories contain 'EditFlags' (01 00 00 00) ... jWin's reg.file didn't list them - should i maybe remove them ? (Or buy a new computer alltogether ?

There shouldn't be any EditFlags entry under those keys, so remove them.
The only EditFlags key should be under Winamp.Playlist itself (00 00 01 00) I've attached the full reg key in a zip below. Extract and open it in Notepad first if you want to take a look... You can manually remove the full HKCR\Winamp.Playlist key in Regedit, then run the reg file in the zip to merge the new & correct key back into the registry. btw, did you make sure both audio/scpls and audio/x-scpls entries were present in HKCR\MIME\Database\Content Type ??? (extension = .pls) I've included these in the zip as well, just in case. Let us know how you get on. Note to others: These reg files should only be used with Win9x/ME, not with Win2k/XP. |

Well, good news and bad news : yesterday I manually modified the registry (winamp.playlist). Afterwards, Winamp worked fine, any stream would immediately start to play. Perfect !
Now today I restarted the computer (I shut it down last night) - and the trouble began all over again ! This time I manually removed the winamp.playlist from the registry and copied the unzipped .reg file you provided me with - it does not work (is this really a matter of one blank in the registry or a <"> or "/" too much ? or is it realplayer or wma that interferes ? or is it something else ? What to do ? PS : also something weird I noticed. Your .reg provides for [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Winamp.Playlist\DefaultIcon] @="C:\\PROGRAM FILES\\WINAMP\\WINAMP.EXE,8" For reasons I don't understand, "8" suddenly seemed to have dissapeared and had become "2"... Kind regs ! |

If you're using Win98 and Winamp is installed to the default location, then you should just rt click the reg file and select "merge".
The icon will change to whatever you've selected in Winamp -> Prefs -> Filetypes (Playlist icon selector). Mine is set to #8, whereas you've chosen icon #2. Jeezes, this is really frustrating - the registry is ok, no doubt ..
I tried I believe everything about 100 times now but this thing isn't working . In the meantime I got rid of RP8 (i uninstalled it) but no, still same story... Are we really talking about the problem the threads you provided me with deal with ? I mean, most threads mention a problem whereby one could still manually open a .pls , I can't : either Winamp picks it up immediately, or it doesn't.. Doubleclicking 5 times on the stream may suddenly make it start, sometimes it takes 10 times, etc... The terrible thing about is that when you dclick 10 times, you have to close 10 'downloading file' - windows. AWFUL ! Now, other thing : as I said the MIME is ok, so I've got all kinds of audio/.... files (scpls, x-scpls, mpeg, etc...). In Settings -> Folder Options -> File types -> winamp.playlist, I've only got a limited selection (ofcourse I put in manually what I need, but it is an indication of another problem (sorry - I'm quite novice and do not have the time to dig into these technicalities). (FYI, what I've got in .playlist is audio/basic, /mid, mpeg, /wav, /x-mpegurl, and /x-ms-wma)... I have really been thinking about uninstalling everything, including Win 98, but on the other hand I think that's not worth it... What to do ? (I could try Sonique (sorry guys) ?? |
