  • It's really cool how the whole world hates Americans.

Worldwide reaction to Pres Bush's ultimatum to Iraq's Pres Saddam Hussein discussed; Bush draws stinging criticism from France and Germany; rest of world seems worried and divided; French Pres Jacques Chirac denounces decision to resort to war as illegal and wrongheaded; German Chancellor Gerhard Schroder echoes similar condemnation; says Germany will honor pledge and allow overflights of US warplanes and use of military bases; Britain's Prime Min Tony Blair delivers impassioned defense of alliance with Pres Bush to Parliament; his government prevails with backing from Conservative opposition in 412-149 vote; Australian government will commit token 2,000 troops, flying in face of widespread public opposition; Prime Min Jose Maria Aznar of Spain emphasizes Madrid's support of Washington, despite widespread opposition among Spaniards, falls short of combat involvement; new opinion poll finds increasing popular resentment and hostility toward US and Bush in most of America's major European allies and Russia; map (M)

As the Bush administration drives toward war in Iraq, resentment and hostility are building toward America in general and Mr. Bush in particular, a new poll has found.

AM sure most of you are likable people. It's just that quite a few of you still have to learn that freedom is about more then just having the right to carrying a gun and taking the right to invade another country under false pretences. Does someone remember Poland 1938

The majority did not vote for him, but the majority DID give him a Repulican Congress and senate, so who's the majority? Or is it because everybody only votes for the "big" ones. Like the presidential elections. No wonder our country is falling in world favor, we're a bunch of idiots sometimes. The President is nothing without the congress and Senate, but over half of the presidential voters do not return to the booth for the Congress and Senate elections. What a crock. We know our President is not All powerful, but yet we vote like he's the only important figure.
I don't hate America, and I'm American (you'd think they'd go hand in hand, but then you'd be wrong). I have a special finger for those Europeans who hate (very very strong word) America, for whatever reason. I don't know if it's jealousy or disgust or whatever. I may not like you, but I certainly do not wish harm upon you. It just seems to me many people want us to be attacked, and I find that pretty bizarre.

Yeah, so I didn't see this thread until I posted in "Dear France", but for those of you who missed it, this is what I've got to say on the subject of American/America bashing.

            Born in the USA!!!

it was meddling in other countries' affairs that created the hatred and eventually terrorism against the US in the first place. they seem to be trying to set it straight. unfortunately, they're trying to set it straight using the methods that created the hatred in the first place. hopefully, at the end of all this, we'll all be able to look back and decide that regardless of who was "right", people were standing up for what they believe in.

i can almost believe that of the UK government. but there's something wrong about the US's government. it all reeks of "hidden agenda" - whether it's oil or approval ratings, i know that the US govt. isn't doing this out of the goodness of their hearts.

Have to agree with you on that one. Somehow it seels that people always take the worst ten percent as an example for a whole group, nation, etc.

I kmow many Muslims myself snd really don't think they would ever wish death to anyone. Most of them are very reasonable people and always open for discussion.

I think it is usually just pplitics and the media that hype up peoples hate against each other.

After all we would all wish for the same beautyful world. It's just that our ideas on how to achieve that perfect world differ a lot. We should learn to respect each others ways and try to learn from each other instead of comndemmning each other.

I know all of this has been said before and might sound like wishfull pseudointellectual Bullshit. But I still believe we should at least tru to live by it. Although we obviously all terribly fail at doing so. But we are all emotional hunabs and not perfect.

This Canadian has a lot of problems with a mindset that says "might makes right" and "we're the only ones with the balls to anything about <insert fad-of-the-day here>".

Balls (and the responsibility that goes with actually *having* them) would mean dealing with a REAL threat like North Korea and not studiously avoiding the issue in favor of "making a big show of finishing daddy's job to distract people from my pathetic domestic and fiscal policy".

The boy we have in power in this country is no angel - he's well past his departure point, his government is corrupt and he's unfortunately only the best of a bad lot. However, I sleep well every night knowing that George W. is NOT at number 10 Sussex Drive.

As an aside (and just to show I don't play favorites), would someone please tell that posturing self-important two-bit bunch of proselytizers (otherwise known as France) where to get off before they finally in their infinite bravado and ineptitude get us ALL screwed? Some of us actually remember their track record in global politics...

It's hilarious! This article (I just realised) is from The New York Times!! The ultimate extreme leftist paper, one of the worst for twisting stories. They probably went out of their way to find a few extremist polls in Europe. Don't forget the MAJORITY of European nations are supporting us.
