    Is time travel actually possible?

I mean, is it actually possible to go back in time (except when we turn our clocks back)? Is the light barrier the answer to actually going back and punching that motherfucker who stole your girl? Or will it instead just put you into a stale time where nothing changes? If you were to go back in time, would everything you do change the future? If you punched that guy, would you still exist? Would you disappear or would you stay constant?

Why can't I think of these things during the day? It's 1:08 my time and these things hit my brain and spiral.

no, time travel is NOT possible,(starts talking like hes 50) you see, at the big bang, matter was flung out at high speeds, at one second past the big bang, the rate of expandadure was somthing lke 1 million million million million million million (1, with 30 zeros after it) kilmetres per second, after 1 hour, 10 thousand km/sec. so you see, as time continues, the speed of which the universe expands, contracts.

now, hang on, doesn't that mean that sometime in the futre, the expansion will stop? yes, that is right, the universe will stop expanding and start contracting. at this point, every thing will change, you will die before you were born, if a glass of water was knocked over, you would see the pieces suddenly reform the glass and float up to the table. at this point, all life as we know it cannot exist. the universe continues to contract untill it reaches 0 space, at this point, it is unablew to predict what will happen next.

so you see, you can't travel back in time, just faster ahead.

this is how we preceve the universe, well, not as a donut, but, yeah, to get from point A to point B, you have top go all the way around via line C

but, if you can go through another dimension (line C), your journey is much shorter than diagram 1

Endura, please try and keep to one post at at time.

I do not think that Time Travel is possible. For a start our phone booths are not cool enough.

time travel would be possible if we could find some sort of matter with a negative energy density. This could keep any found wormholes open for as long as they need to be open, and give us a nice wormhole to travel through that could let us get places before it would be seemingly possible.

Time doesn't exist, it's a measurement, like metres. You cannot move though something that does not exist. True going back in time would involve the motion of all individual particles in existence to move in the exact opposite direction to how they were moving previous. I don't believe it would be possible to move selective particles back in time, since particles of some form or another are everywhere, and moving selected particles exactly backwards would cause them to move the other particles backwards. It would also turn back the particles of the mechine used backwards, so maybe it would result in more of a 'ping pong' bubble of particles.

Eeh, this is all raw thought with no 'scientific' basis, but it all makes sense to me.

Fundamental flaw in your argument - you can move backwards 5 metres; you can't move backwards 5 seconds.

one of the quinticential arguments against time travel is that if its developed in say 100 years, why over the course of human histroy have we never met a time traveler?

If you move faster than the speed of light you're not moving faster than time, you're moving faster than light. Light is just something we sense. If you travel faster than light, all you will get is light that you would've sensed in 2 seconds time. Thats not time travel. Thats just heightened senses. Time travel. Pffbt.

The universe wont collapse on itself. Newer studies with dark matter and dark energy and such show that the universe's expansion is speeding up, and galaxies moving further and further away from each other. 'Tis still a sad ending. Nothingness.

And as for time travel, who knows. Havent seen anyone from the future? Perhaps that when time travel is made, you can't manafest youself in any physical form while traveling, meaning, no interaction with anyone from the past. Which means you couldnt accidentally change the future, because you cant speak to anyone or touch anyone or anything, just as no one can see you or feel you. So perhaps we de have time travelers, but we will never know.

People don't seem to realise. Time isn't a thing you can manipulate. It's like, imagine trying to go into the 2nd dimension. It's ridiculous isn't it. Well so is time travel. Time is merely just our name for the present moving forward. Red Dwarf illustrated this point excellently when they got hold of a time machine and wen't back in time.
"there, were here.""well""well what""well where are we""the date reading says the 13th century""so"well were 3 million years into deep space... in the 13th century"
Time cannot be modified. If you went faster than the speed of light you wouldn't see the future or the past you would simply see what you would've percieved to be the present in a few seconds time. But now instead.

That is, if the big bang is true, which I believe is a load of crock.

I think thats not quite how relativity works. I don't prentend to have paid full attension to physics 151 but that doesn't sound right.

Plus i've been taught of an experiment where they flew 2 planes with highly accurate synchronized clocks. one went really really ridiculously fast. in the end they compared the 2 clocks and there was a slight difference.

[edit] so i just opened up the ol physics book and i read up on my theory of relativity. The whole isea is that time is not an absolute. For example if you are on a train going 50 mph and you throw a ball forward at 10 mph, it will seem like its going 10 mph to you, but to a guy standing next to the train watching it go by the ball will appear to be going 60 mph. Relativity of time means that if you ate dinner in 15 minutes on a train at .65 times the speed of light, to an observer outside the train 20 minteus would have passed. [re-edit to fix my numbers cause i'm an idiot who can't copy from a book]

but anyhow, i think the theory of relativity is often misunderstood to justify time travel. no one is sure what would happen if it is possible to surpass the speed of light. [/edit]

Maybe Alien sightings are really us coming back and popping in for a few seconds......hmmm.

Look at the Pyramids. Maybe someone from the future went back and said "No, no. I distictly remember there being giant Triangular things here!"

I agree with the time travel only forward thing.
Wouldn't the breaking of light travel make something invisible? I mean, you not seeing the light bounce of whatever it is, so you're like Hollow Man with better things to do than kill people.
