  • A Glass of Whisky in One Hand and Lenin in the Other.

Is communism nothing more than an ideal? After all, it's human nature to do better than your neighbour.

They say the USSR was a failed experiment - but the system there was nothing like communism. It was more of a police state.

    Any views?

communism works, when done right. look at ants, and bees, but no, humas are dumb. we think like indivuduials, and so, communism will never work with humans.

you'll never see a Bee want special reconigition just because he found a new feild of flowers, or an ant want to be promoted because he foudn a dead rat they can scavage. A human woudl want something, something to show that he did it, that he is special because he did something no one else did. Even though they foudn it 'for the whole' he woudl want to be greater than most of 'the whole'.

Communism on any kind of grand scale must be enforced to prevent stealing for the system. Without this enforcement, it becomes what is essentially a highly regulated and dysfunctional capitalist model. People will naturally try to get the highest value for whatever commodity they produce, and they will often better themselves to the detriment of society. For socialism to work effectively, it is almost a given that the state will be under martial law. People must be heavily policed in order to stop them from bettering themselves.

One must also factor that in a socialist society the worker must be self-motivated, as he will see very little return for whatever work he does. Most people are not self-motivated, and thus will do as little work as possible while escaping punishment. When you consider that this is the case for a significant percentage (I would venture to say majority) of the population, problems arise. Additionally, the mere infrastructure requires for control and distribution of goods is by necessity a mechanism for waste and inefficiency.

Socialism is a noble idea, but one which is unsuited for a real society.

Take the salary of everyone, add it all together and divide by the number of people, and you have the salary. This is what everyone gets paid in a socalist country, regardless of what job they do.

The problem with socialism and communism is that, in general, people are lazy. If the guy who mows my lawn gets paid the same as I do when I am a neurosurgeon, first of all, why did I bother to expend hard work to learn neurosurgery and second, neurosurgery is hard and stressful, I think I'll just get a job taking tickets at the local movie theater because hey, it pays the same as neurosurgery but I don't have to work long hours and there's no stress.
Or maybe I'll move to a country where my neurosurgeon skills are more highly valued, where I will make more money than my gardener because my job is worth more than gardening.

What this does to the socalist country is it removes my large revenue of neurosurgery from the gross revenue of everyone and this, in turn, lowers the overall amount the salary that everyone gets.

There is no incentive to work hard at something or be better than someone because there is no reward for doing so. Most people do not like to work, that is why it's called work. That's why there needs to be a fitting reward for hard work because if there isn't then why bother? In my job as a telemarketer, I can work from home, I make one call a day and play playstation the rest of the time, I still get paid as much as a doctor.

Communism was supposed to work that way, but it didn't. The idea of everyone being "equal" went out the door when those in power saw what a threat that idea would be to them. Thus, those in power had way more than the common people. Those in power also didn't want anyone to have a say in anything. They didn't want anyone to think for themselves. It turned communism into a system that encouraged brown-nosing and backstabbing.

                  concordantly, ergo, vis a vis...
it all comes down to the fact that everyone ISN'T equal. people should be given equal oppurtunities and that sort of thing, but some excell in certain subjects and some don't, and the ones that do should not be equalized to the ones that do not. communism ignores the fact that some people are simply more educated and better at life than others and deserve to be viewed in a different light than those who do not excell (when handing out salaries, anyway). society NEEDS elitism, because some people are just more 1337 than others.

From each, according to his ability; To each according, to his need That was the idea! So a family of four needs more than a single person. And every job is important!

In a just society, Mr 1337 should give a portion of his salary to Mr 1.5, who probably can't help being less well equipped at life. This is done to a small degree now through taxes (distribution of wealth and all that). But it could go much much further. I think Sweden has almost got it right.

but sweden is burdend by a massive tax defficet. They have too many waisted programs that are really putting a strain on their economy. But I do think they have the right idea going. Socialism doesnt work well with humans, b/ human nature is to be better then everyone else (unless you have a lot of buddhists...). So they would steal and pervert the system to get it so they get more then the next person.
But yes, it does work well with ants and the like. But the more intelegent the creaturs, the more social problems they have. We seem to have the most. We are perverting and killing the world that surrounds us, all for money.
I personaly think we should go back to more of a tribal type thing, but living with nature, not against it.

Socialism is a great Idea, just it can never succeed in a pure forum and with the current set of humans.

I am not familiar with socialism or what sort of government/ideology that Sweden has.

I do believe that for some developing countries, their best chance at developing would be communism. It would but their country in debt, yes, but they would receive loans from a lot of already developed countries who would want cheap labour. It would all have to come from government sponsored, all equal, programs. We start with the basics, food. The government rations out food as it is needed to families, this means families will not have to mass produce kids to help on their farm. Said family and their kids now have free time, which allows them to attend the government sponsored, and therefore free, school. The school educates them. This education makes them more intelligent, and makes them more appealing as an employee. This educated workforce is also cheap, as the country is still developing. A large corporation from a developed country moves into the country and starts a factory. This in turn creates revenue for the country, allowing it to make their government sponsored programs better and better, until people are being educated enough and making enough money to be able to afford things on their own. Granted, this is a very dumbed down timeline of events, but the principal is the same. I hope I have made this clear enough to understand.

only problem printscrn is that the "larg corppration" would not want(or let) the nation to advance and become more powerful and lose its cheap labour. Why has vietnam and other places where shoes are made in massive factorys not gotten out of debt/advacned much at all. Well ignoring the currupted government.
I think socialism may be good for a developing nation, but then again so are other ways, like have the World bank or whatnot drop all the debt to the 3rd world nations, giving them much more money to put back into their country every year. It could help them out a lot, getting like 60% of their profet back, they could invest it in better farms, better education, better healthcare, better everything.
But I guess it is the free markets way of keeping developing nations at bay and getting cheap labour and such.
