I wonder how much further we would have got if so much hadn't been invested in fighting each other than if we had worked together?
Who know's the theory of warp drive now exists no reason why it can't become a reality I reckon.

Who knows. But I think that, unfortunately, war tends to increase development. Maybe without 2 WWs we'd still be seeing competition for trans Atlantic crossings between ships and Airships.

Ya, I know war is pointless. But I see it as a larger motivation for improvement then if we all were working together. I dont with this was true, but more value would be placed on the research if it was needed for a greater power strugle. Then if we were all just doing whatnot and at peace.
Such great evils make us try our best, it is rather sad.
But, still amazing as to how far we had gone in 100 years, not just think what the computers of the future will be like (around 50 years, for the 100 year aniverery, right?)

yeah but computers have achieved phenominal leaps in developement as oppossed to planes over a given time frame, and yes granted they wouldn't have developed as rapidly with out military stuff, but most of the major developement came from when stuff was shared and ideas were worked on together.
Way I see it all this secrecy stuff has done is slow down our evolution to a higher level of society rather tahn helped.
                Anywa I'm off topic...

Still a fine achievement people must have thought they were a pair of nutters I'll bet but fair play they did it and the rest is history so to speak.. But they weren't the first technically as balloonists had been about for quite some time..And I think I read some where about he chineese having kites capable of lifting a person of the ground. Not the same I know ..
Kinda have an admiration for folk like the Wright Bros. Like Amy Johnson now there was an entrepid flyer......

We cannot produce enough antimater, and also we dont have inertial stabalisers (or "Please dont squish me into a pulp with the acceleration" engines).

It's theoretically posible to achieve light speed using solar wind. Problem being it would take centuries to reach it and centuries to slow down again. It would also need a greater concentration of stars in the neighbourhood than we have.

In my AP Physics class today, in honor of it, we had a paper airplane flying contest. I got 24 extra credit points--woohoo! (you were awarded points based on how far yours went. Mine was one of the better ones).

I forgot about this until I read this thread...And I sit by an aviation poster that's in my World Civ. class everyday that mentions about that day of Dec. 17, 1903...
"I just want to lie in my own crusty filth, eating rancid egg sandwiches, until some unfortunate paramedic has to blow down my door to find my bloated and pasty corpse wedged between the nightstand and mattress stained with Bengay and Robitussin DM." - Greg Gutfeld on sex and seniors

The history books are wrong - flight was first achieved some time way back by the Pterodactyls and similar dinos.

(And that is not a cue for dino pictures. If the thread degenerates into DinoPorn, it shall get locked and all dinoposters banned).
