  • Hard Drive trouble

I was wondering why my hard drive makes a really high pitched noise every now and then. Anybody know why it does that. Does anybody know how to make it stop.

what is the make and model? It could be a sign of the HDD dieing on you, or the ball bearings wearing out, and then it will crap out on you. So, I would recomend you backup everything important, and get a new HDD, and copy everything you want over to it.

Its a Western Digital Caviar 22100. Its a 2.1gb HD. I would need a new one soon anyways. I have about 300mb left.

        I have about 300mb left.
I'd fill that in 2-3 days I currently use about 1 gig a week..

do as laz says (best safe than sorry) and get your self a new drive. I'd say a seagate Barracuda 40gig is a good drive.

Its a 6 year old computer. Its a Dell Optiplex GX1 @400mhz. 128mb RAM. Its a good computer it just has a few bugs. How much is a good HD? I don't want to spend any more than I have to. I'd spend maybe less than $50. I don't have that much money. I'm still in school and my dad probably won't pay for a new HD for my computer. Plus I'm cheap.

Heck, for $50 you can get a 40g easily, just watch the newspaper ads.

I didn't think about the newspaper. I was thinking more about Best Buy and Circuit City...... Thats a good idea. Thanks

Must suck to have broadband. If I leave the net downloading all day I might get 100 or 200 megs :P

I had that exact same drive, and it made the same sound before it died on me. Luckily, I knew it was going, so I backed up all my stuff.

Bacl up everything you need/want, and then get a new drive.

I downloaded 14 gigs in a day once. Gotta love using 2 megabit downstream, running full speed for about 16 hours.

When it dies take it apart for fun. The magnets inside hard drives are great things to play with, and the platters are shiny. Oooo....
