  • Automatic playlist generation based on mood of music

    Hello everybody!

As a part of my master thesis, I'm going to make an application which will build playlist... based on mood of the music! (I will also develop it as a Winamp plug-in).

Now I'm doing some research and it will be very helpful for me, if You answer few questions:
    1. have You been using Moodagent, Musicovery, Aupeo, Stereomood etc? What impressions do You have? What would You change in this apps?
    2. do You often use shuffle mode? do You shuffle whole music collection or do you often choose only few artists/albums/songs based on your mood at a given moment?
    3. when using shuffle mode, do You often skip any tracks? why? Do You like situations when very calm songs are followed by quite energetic one or are they cases when You are skipping songs?

    Any other suggestions for me?
    Thanks a lot!

    Cool idea!

    Welcome and

    thanks for posting!

    1. Have You been using Moodagent, Musicovery, Aupeo, Stereomood etc? What impressions do You have? What would You change in this apps?

Well your first question stopped me.

I have never used any of those sites. I will give them a try and get back with you!

I do use this site. When I'm in the mood.

I think I know these answers.

    2. Do You often use shuffle mode? Yes almost always

2.a Do You shuffle whole music collection No

Do you often choose only few artists/albums/songs based on your mood at a given moment? Yes

    3. When using shuffle mode, do You often skip any tracks? No

Why? If I skip a track I don't want it on my play list.

Do You like situations when very calm songs are followed by quite energetic one. Yes and I like 3 or 4 energetic ones then a slower one.

Or are they cases when You are skipping songs? No

    Welcome to the forums.

If you don't get much response to this thread it might do better here. http://forums.winamp.com/forumdisplay.php?f=8

      Thanks for the answers!
It will be great if You play with some of this services (Moodagent etc.) and tell me what do You like/dislike in them

By question "Do You like situations when very calm songs are followed by quite energetic one" I mean rather "...situations when for example..." (sorry, my mistake ) - in other words - do You like when two consecutive songs have different mood (calm song followed by energetic one, energetic one followed by calm one, happy one followed with sad one etc).

Mmm.. I don't use that services but I do have a couple of ideas that could help you, maybe.

So, I'll answer what I can from that:
        2. do You often use shuffle mode? 50% of the time I listen to music, I do it this way, but not really with "shuffle mode", I shuffle the playlist myself so I can see what's next (using Misc actions - Sort - Randomize list).

Do You shuffle whole music collection or....? I shuffle within a pre-made playlist based on my mood (say 10 to 12 artists / albums). My whole music collection is too big and eclectic..

        3. when using shuffle mode, do You often skip any tracks? why? Yes, because I want to listen to the next song or I don't like it that much..

Do You like situations when very calm songs are followed by quite energetic one..? Nope, I like if a playlist has a "way up" and a "way down", but not abrupt changes (so I would like 3 or 4 calm songs followed by 3 or 4 loud songs, but I won't like 1 and 1..).

        ******************
These ideas came to me last days while listening to my shuffled music collection in my car, so I didn't had much chance to change or shape what I was listening, which is something I don't usually do but I imagine is similar to what feels like to use one of those "Mood services". Personally I don't believe in an algorithm that can match my mood and play specific songs that I really like in that moment.. so my ideas / suggestions are based a bit in that direction; shape the mechanics so it fits better my mood:

If I would use a "Mood service" I would like it to be a "dynamic" playlist instead of "static" one, so I can shape the playlist as it plays. For example:

        - Add an option to automatically remove an artist or album when you skip that artist´s / album´s song.. say.. 3 times. Example: I shuffle trough a huge collection of 30 albums, there is 1 artist I don't really want to listen now, so when I skip 3 times one of his songs, the remaining ones are automatically removed from the playlist.
This can be more or less flexible, the option could focus on artist or album, etc.

        - Inverted option; Add the ability to "repeat artist", so when I hear a singer I want to hear again, I can select something like "repeat choice / artist" and the playlist will jump to the next song of that artist. (this idea is based in something that usually happens to me, I hear a singer/band I haven't heard in a while and want to keep listening to it, but if shuffle mode is on I won't find it again soon..).

        - Use filters; so, for example, I can leave OUT all the spanish music I have because I want to hear only english music (I don't like to mix both, and it happens a lot, that's why I normally shuffle trough "controlled" playlists). For this you can obviously use tags; filter by genres, comments, year, etc.

And there was more stuff I think but I don't want you to get bored with my limited english, so good luck with your thesis and don't forget to post back with your progress & ideas.
