    Hey interets,

    I've been wondering about this and I can't figure it out, so I figured I'd ask teh intarwebz:

    Why are headphones called headphones if they don't have a microphone? (a headphone with a mic is generally called a headSET)
    A phone isn't a phone without a microphone.

    Thus, also:

    Why are microphones called microphones if they don't have a speaker or headphone?
    A phone isn't a phone without a speaker or headphone.

    The world is weird

          A phono device is a sound device; headphones go on your head and output sound. Similarly, microphones receive sound.

            Look up the word "transducer". Microphones and speakers are both transducers - they can convert mechanical energy into electrical energy (and do the reverse as well).

            In a nutshell, this is one of the reasons why speakers are one of the more important elements of a musical system (and mics are so god almighty important to a broadcaster).
            The search for the ultimate signature continues apace. I have journeyed from the peaks of Nepal to the depths of oceanic trenches. I have crossed deserts, jungles, swamps, savannas, steppes and frozen wastelands. I have consulted with seers, swamis, sages, scholars and savants. The peregrination proceeds purposefully.

              nah , in some cases i would prefer that the jock kept his mouth and just played music,
              some DJ's think they are greater than the music they play.
              Those should stay silent , nobody is greater than music.

                Yeah, I made a typo. You've seen me make a typo. Rememer the moment, it does happen.
                That was supposed to be 'internets'. I wanted to edit it when I saw it but I was too late.

                NJK: That statement is true in a lot of cases, but there is music that does suck monkey balls, and some DJ's are really good.

                And yes, audio quality is really important when it comes to how you experience music. I've had the same Sennheiser headphones for over 15 years now and I don't think I'll ever switch to any other brand.

                  Type in google Beyerdynamics and you might want to change.

                  always been the sennheiser user since my first headphones but in the radiostudio i have left the Senn for the Beyerdynamics.

                    Some Beyerdynamics have a nasty treble peak though. My favs (that don't cost an arm and a leg) are AKG K701 and its cousins (K601-712 and Q701).

                    Btw, Sennheiser only got into making headphones because their technicians used to test microphone capsules by playing music through them and one of them got the idea of hooking up two capsules to a headband. After no other company showed interst in the design, they decided to bring it to market themselves. The result: Probably the best selling headphones of all time, the HD 414.

                      Pro=good
                      Con=bad
                      Progress=good or moving forward
                      Opposite of progress word must keep -gress and add con-, therefore

                      Why do we park on a driveway and drive on a parkway?

                      Why are living rooms so void of life and liveliness?

                      When we work "out of our homes" why are we actually working in our homes?

                      I've been a mental health professional for many years (honestly), so why do I feel like I'm beginning to need one after typing this post?

                          Wish I were. Not necessarily wanting to be full on drunk, but a beer would be nice. These are work nights though.
