is this because of the antitrust settlement? or something like that? it sounds vaguely familiar, like i might have heard about it somewhere else. do you have a link to the site you heard this?

In space no one can hear you scream.

My University (Texas Tech) takes part in this agreement. With it, I can purchase:
        Microsoft Frontpage 2000 $5.00
        Microsoft Frontpage XP $5.00
        Microsoft Office 2000 $5.00
        Microsoft Office XP Pro $10.00
        Microsoft Mac Office 98 $5.00
        Microsoft Mac Office 2001 $5.00

However, I can also acquire OS updates (2K Pro, XP pro, etc) and Visual Studio with free downloads from a school server. This are the full versions of the products, but they don't include documentation and technical support of any kind. (I just installed the XP pro update over the weekend, and it worked out great)

And legally, MS is just letting me 'borrow' the software for educational purposes. If I leave Texas Tech for any reason, or for reason MS decides not to renew the yearly contract, I must erase all of the software I have from the Campus Agreement.

        for more info, go here

The Catholic shool board in my area gives its students free copies of win2k, Office XP, and so on. In New Brunswick, if you show a student card (high school, university ID card), you can get about 50% off the retail price of any MS product at any store that sells their products.

MS (and Bill Gates) is big on education. Hence, the Bill and Melinda Gates Fund, and MS's policy of selling their products to students at or below production costs.

MS didn't start that, and it's not really about education. Every major software company does that, because they want you to become accustomed to their products. I've bought Borland C++ Builder Pro and Borland Delphi Pro for $100, each. That's a 75% discount. MSoft doesn't usualyy give that much.

I don't care who started it, as long as I can get cool swag for free, or next to it

I believe that the University must enter an agreement with Microsoft in order to offer such a program. The University is basically paying for the license and the cost (~$5) is just for the media. However not all titles are covered. For instance at my University MS Office, Front Page, Windows and Visual Studio were the only titles available to us at this discounted rate.

                      Yossarian,
I wonder if each campus agreement is different because the way ours worked was if you left the University as a student while the MSCA was in place then you can legally use the software forever.
