  • Sound quality 128kbps or 160kbps

Which one is better 128kbps or 160kbps? I know that 160 kbps will sound better but which one will give you more advantages. I'm just curious. I tried listening to them before and I think that they are not very much different while 160kbps files are bigger.

    this thread is rediculas.....
What do you think is better?

192kbps VBR is probably the best for mp3

130kbps is good with vorbis(prefered format)

128-160kbps mp3's are shit for burning to CD...they don't sound right on a good audio system

I encode all my cd's at 192...only because im picky and h/d space isnt a concern.

128 sounds fine most of the time.

I mean 128 and 160kbps CBR in mp3 not for burning to a CD.

but if you want to burn them in the future.... they won't sound good

if you don't have a problem with disk space....download 192kbps or higher

If youre only listening to them on a pc, not thinking about burning them to cd then 128 should be ok...unless youre using a good quality sound card and speakers and want the best possible sound quality.........

If you are, then buy the cd

              Opinionation..

right, looky here, this is my opinion, and it's final.

below 160 is unaccepteable quality unless the track is intended for streaming only, and even then, it should be higher than this and then downrated on the fly.

160 is the absolute minimum you can encode to without easily audible loss of sound quality.

However, if you have more than an sb16 and the altec lansing's that came with your dell, you might want to shell out for 192 or 256, personally, i encode at 256, lesth it be something so simple that it can go well at 192.

And, of course, i wouldn't even pick up a stick to touch vbr, all i encode is cbr, and that's the way it should be.

Well, those were my final opinions. thank ye.

I used to re-encode everything to 128. Now 192 is more than good enough. I rarely encode now, but if i do i use vbr with the so called 'r3mix' LAME setting. (Just noticed eac uses '--alt-preset standard', not that there is any difference)

I don't see a problem with this thread. Nerds need to learn that not everybody has their knowledge. Some people are new to computers and haven't wasted years of their live in front of one.

I think the best title for this thread is What's the best bit rate for mp3's.
I personally use Ching's mp3 output for winamp (using lame encoder), but some options there are pretty unclear.
can you guys share with us your best encoding settings.

I use LAME with the r3mix setting. It sounds at least as good as any other setting I've heard.

If you ared going with CBR, then 256 is all you need. Anything more is an absolute waste. It's been proven in blind tests.

LAME with the --alt-preset standard or extreme preset. File size isn't an issue for me
